Johnson ties career high with 6 walks for Marlins
Sun Jul 29, 2012 6:27 PM

MIAMI (AP) Josh Johnson is trying to keep his concentration on the field.

With scouts from about a dozen teams watching, Johnson tied a career high with six walks as the Miami Marlins rallied from a two-run deficit and beat the San Diego Padres 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday.

"I'm pitching for this team, so that's all I'm worried about," Johnson said.

The 2010 NL ERA champion allowed two runs - one earned - and two hits in five innings with four strikeouts.

"Just a mess, but I found away to clean up, I guess," Johnson said. "I don't know how, but I made pitches when I needed to."

Miami, a disappointing 47-54 following a $191 million free-agent spending spree, already has dealt Hanley Ramirez, Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez in recent weeks and has discussed possible trades involving Johnson. He is 6-7 with a 4.04 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 124 2-3 innings,

"We made a couple moves earlier. We had a couple of meetings yesterday and we didn't talk about him," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I hope they keep him, but this is a business, and business happens for a reason."

Johnson is 54-30 with a 3.13 ERA for Marlins over the past eight years and is signed through next season at $13.75 million annually. He also walked six against Toronto on June 18, 2006.

"He's still here, so that's good," Marlins shortstop Jose Reyes said. "I enjoy playing behind J.J."

Justin Ruggiano hit a game-ending single off Brad Brach (0-2) after Reyes doubled leading off and Carlos Lee was intentionally walked.

"I've had quite a few in the minors," Ruggiano said of the game-ending hit. "It feels the same. A walkoff is a walkoff, no matter where you are. It's always a good feeling."

San Diego loaded the bases with two outs in the 10th against Ryan Webb (4-2), but Chase Headley flied out. The Padres stranded 14 runners - two shy of their season high, set against the Marlins on May 4.

"We put three zeros up there in the seventh, eighth and ninth and gave our guys a chance in a tight game," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We just didn't get the big knock."

San Diego starter Clayton Richard gave up two runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Mark Kotsay's RBI double in the third and Richard's sacrifice fly in the fourth built a 2-0 lead for the Padres, but the Marlins went ahead 4-2 in the sixth on Lee's sacrifice fly off Dale Thayer, Ruggiano's RBI single and Donnie Murphy's two-run triple over Kotsay in right.

Yonder Alonso's two-run homer against Edward Mujica tied the score in the eighth, a 410-foot drive to right.

"It was a sinker that stayed middle over the plate," Alonso said. "I was just trying to drive it."

Alonso, a Miami native, went 5 for 13 with a home run and five RBIs in the series.

NOTES: The Marlins placed LF Logan Morrison (right knee inflammation) on the 15-day DL. ... Padres closer Huston Street agreed to a $14 million, two-year contract through 2014. ... Marlins RHP Jacob Turner made his first start on Saturday for Triple-A New Orleans after being acquired from Detroit last week. The former first-round pick got the win, allowing one run and two hits in five innings. ... The Padres will begin a four-game series at Cincinnati on Monday with RHP Edison Volquez (6-7, 3.30 ERA) starting against RHP Mike Leake (4-6, 4.12 ERA). The Marlins start an 11-game trip at Atlanta. LHP Mark Buehrle (9-9, 3.31 ERA) will start for the Marlins against RHP Tommy Hanson (11-5, 4.39 ERA).
