Kris Medlen allowed just one (unearned) run in seven innings as the Braves beat the Dodgers 3-1 on Saturday. Medlen was superb, yielding just two hits and three walks while striking out five batters. It was a nice bounceback effort for the talented right-hander, who struggled on Sunday against the Giants. He will carry an improving 3.02 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into his next start against the light-hitting Mets. |

Craig Kimbrel picked up an easy save Saturday as the Braves defeated the Dodgers at Turner Field. Kimbrel used only 10 pitches in all and yet still struck out two of the three batters he faced. He's had some uncharacteristic struggles this year, but they were never all that concerning. The hard-throwing right-hander might be the best reliever in baseball. |

Upton gave Atlanta the lead with a sixth-inning grand slam and the Braves finally unveiled their full-strength lineup, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5 on Friday night. Upton, who finished the night with five RBIs, leads the majors with 14 homers. He hit 17 all of last season. |

Braves signed LHP Joe Beimel to a minor league contract. Beimel is finally recovered from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery and could help the battered Atlanta bullpen down the line. The 36-year-old right-hander will presumably report to Triple-A Gwinnett. |

An MRI taken Saturday on Eric O'Flaherty's left arm revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament. That's the injury that almost always leads to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. O'Flaherty will visit Dr. James Andrews next week and is likely out for the year. The Atlanta bullpen continues to take big hits. |

Kris Medlen allowed just one (unearned) run in seven innings as the Braves beat the Dodgers 3-1 on Saturday. Medlen was superb, yielding just two hits and three walks while striking out five batters. It was a nice bounceback effort for the talented right-hander, who struggled on Sunday against the Giants. He will carry an improving 3.02 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into his next start against the light-hitting Mets.
Craig Kimbrel picked up an easy save Saturday as the Braves defeated the Dodgers at Turner Field. Kimbrel used only 10 pitches in all and yet still struck out two of the three batters he faced. He's had some uncharacteristic struggles this year, but they were never all that concerning. The hard-throwing right-hander might be the best reliever in baseball.
Upton gave Atlanta the lead with a sixth-inning grand slam and the Braves finally unveiled their full-strength lineup, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5 on Friday night. Upton, who finished the night with five RBIs, leads the majors with 14 homers. He hit 17 all of last season.
Braves signed LHP Joe Beimel to a minor league contract. Beimel is finally recovered from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery and could help the battered Atlanta bullpen down the line. The 36-year-old right-hander will presumably report to Triple-A Gwinnett.
An MRI taken Saturday on Eric O'Flaherty's left arm revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament. That's the injury that almost always leads to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. O'Flaherty will visit Dr. James Andrews next week and is likely out for the year. The Atlanta bullpen continues to take big hits.
Braves general manager Frank Wren said O'Flaherty has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. The loss of O'Flaherty, who faces possible season-ending surgery, leaves the Braves in a sudden bullpen crisis.
Braves placed LHP Eric O'Flaherty on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow. It's not clear yet how long he might be out. O'Flaherty was rocking a 2.50 ERA and 0.94 WHIP through 18 innings.
Justin Upton smacked a go-ahead grand slam and knocked in five runs in Friday's 8-5 win over the Dodgers. For all his early success, this was the first time he had driven in more than two runs in a game this season. Upton collected his first RBI with a ground out in the bottom of the third inning and put the Braves ahead with his grand slam off Paco Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth. Paul Maholm allowed four runs (two earned) in six innings Friday in a win over the Dodgers. Maholm was in line for the loss before Justin Upton launched a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning. The southpaw gave up eight hits (including a home run) and a walk while notching three strikeouts. While Maholm hasn't been able to match his early dominance, he still makes for a useful mixed in mixed fantasy leagues.
Jason Heyward (appendectomy) went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, a walk and two runs scored Friday in his return from the disabled list. Heyward had just one multi-hit game in 17 games prior to his appendectomy last month. We hope you bought low during his lengthy DL stint, as things should only get better from there.
Brandon Beachy (elbow) will make his second rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. After throwing 29 pitches over two innings in his first start, Beachy will be limited to three innings or 45 pitches in his second outing. He's expected to make around five starts in the minors to regain his arm strength before rejoining the Braves' rotation in the middle of June. If you haven't already done so, now would be a terrific time to stash the young right-hander in most fantasy leagues.
Walden was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation to clear a spot for Jason Heyward. Walden has a 4.85 ERA in 14 games.

It's an injury that we hadn't heard about until now, but perhaps we should have known something was up with Walden allowing five runs over his last three appearances (1 1/3 innings). It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined.
Braves activated OF Jason Heyward from the 15-day disabled list. Out since late April following an appendectomy, Heyward's return was delayed a few days after he dealt with a little soreness while on a rehab assignment, but he's ready to roll now. The outfielder was batting just .121/.261/.259 with two home runs prior to the injury, but fantasy owners should feel free to immediately insert him back into their lineup.
Freeman was 3 for 4 with two doubles in Atlanta's 5-3 loss at Arizona on Wednesday. Freeman has three doubles in his last three games after recording three in his previous 24 games this season.
Venters has undergone the second major elbow operation of his career and will miss the rest of the season. The Braves say the left-hander had Tommy John surgery Thursday to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The procedure was performed in Gulf Breeze, Fla., by Dr. James Andrews.

Venters can now be ruled out for the remainder of the 2013 season and is also likely to miss the first couple months of the 2014 campaign. It's obviously a pretty big loss for the Atlanta bullpen.
B.J. Upton (shoulder) went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts in his return to the Braves' lineup Wednesday. Upton missed Tuesday's game with a mild bruise on his left shoulder. The 28-year-old outfielder is batting .145/.242/.244 with three homers, six RBI and 49 strikeouts in 36 games this season.
Freddie Freeman went 3-for-5 with two doubles to drive in all three Braves runs on Wednesday. Freeman had gone five straight games without an RBI, but this brings his total to 22 in 27 games this season. He'll start hitting more homers soon enough.
Teheran allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings in Tuesday's 2-0 loss at Arizona. After a shaky start to the year, Teheran has compiled a 2.84 ERA while striking out 14 and walking just one over his last four starts spanning 25 1-3 innings.
Brandon Beachy (elbow) will make his first official minor league rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Gwinnett. Beachy was cleared after he threw 29 pitches over two innings Tuesday during a start in extended spring training. He's expected to make around five starts in the minors, which puts him on pace to join the Braves around the anniversary of his Tommy John surgery on June 21. He's well worth stashing in most fantasy leagues.
Julio Teheran took his first loss after allowing two runs in six innings Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. The Braves had been 6-0 in Teheran's starts, largely because they scored at least six runs in five of those games. Teheran was pretty shaky in the early going, but now he's allowed eight runs over 25 1/3 innings in his last four starts. He's walked just one batter in that span.
Brandon Beachy (elbow) threw 29 pitches over two innings in an extended spring training start on Tuesday. Beachy was hitting 92-93 mph with his fastball, which is obviously a good sign. The Braves have not revealed the next step for the right-hander, but they'll bring him along slowly.

The shoulder isn't as anticipated, and the outfielder says he'll be available off the bench Tuesday before likely returning Wednesday.

Freddie Freeman went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the Braves' win over the D'Backs on Monday. Entering the game, Freeman was 11-for-45 (.244) with a .647 OPS over 11 May games. Monday's game hopefully shook him from a 4-for-23 slide. Hitting in the middle of a loaded lineup, Freeman has breakout potential.
Upton was back in action for the Braves on Wednesday. Upton left the Braves' 10-1 win over Arizona on Monday with a left shoulder contusion.
Mike Minor hurled 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball Monday in the Braves' 10-1 boat race of the D'Backs. Minor struck out four and walked two in improving to 5-2 with a 2.75 ERA, but it wasn't all good news. He surrendered eight hits, including a 422-foot home run to Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning. Minor has now given up six bombs over his last four outings after allowing just one prior to April 28. He'll take the ball next against the Dodgers on Sunday.
In his return to Arizona, Justin Upton launched his MLB-leading 13th homer in Monday's victory over the Diamondbacks. Atlanta's new toy finished 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs, and two RBI in the route. Heading into the game, Upton hadn't hit a home run in 14 games and hadn't logged a multi-hit game in a week. Upton leads the NL in homers, runs and slugging percentage and is second in OPS.
Brian McCann hit his third home run in four games Monday against Arizona. McCann finished 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk, two runs scored and three RBI. Since returning from the disabled list (shoulder surgery), the brawny backstop is 7-for-21 with three walks, three long flies and 10 RBI. He should be active in all formats.

Kris Medlen allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Giants. Medlen gave up home runs to Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Belt in consecutive innings, and struggled with his control (five walks) before he was removed in the sixth inning after working up a high pitch count. Despite his solid 3.44 ERA, Medlen has just one win this season. He'll look to get things turned around in his next start vs. the Dodgers

Braves signed RHP Kameron Loe to a minor league contract. He'll report to Triple-A Gwinnett. Loe was designated for assignment by the Cubs earlier this week and then turned down a spot at Triple-A Iowa after clearing waivers. He has struggled since the beginning of the 2012 season, but he's a low-risk signing who could wind up being a solid middle reliever down the line for Atlanta.
Evan Gattis went 2-for-4 in the Braves' loss to the Giants on Saturday in San Francisco. Gattis did not look comfortable in left field, but it was the exact opposite for him at the plate. He doubled and singled, and now boasts an .826 OPS in 29 games.

San Francisco beat Tim Hudson for the first time in seven years in an 8-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Hudson (4-2, 4.70 ERA) was cruising until the fourth when the Giants batted around and scored six runs. The Braves' veteran right-hander had been 6-0 with a 2.48 ERA against San Francisco since losing to them on April 8, 2006.
Tim Hudson struggled through 3 2/3 innings on Friday, giving up six runs in a loss to the Giants. Hudson has given up six runs in both of his losses this year, while never allowing more than three runs in any of his other six starts. He's not the ace he used to be, but he's still a safe bet to be useful in ERA, WHIP and victories.
Brian McCann homered in a second straight game Friday to give the Braves their only two runs against the Giants. McCann homered off Ryan Vogelsong on Thursday and Matt Cain tonight. It didn't seem likely that he'd come out of the gates quite this well after returning from shoulder surgery this week. It's great news for the Braves, though.

Braves released LHP Dusty Hughes. The 30-year-old managed just a 6.75 ERA in 12 relief appearances. As a lefty with a pulse, Hughes should find work somewhere.

Craig Kimbrel tossed a scoreless ninth inning Thursday against the Giants for his 100th career save. Kimbrel blew saves in three out of his last five opportunities, but there wasn't much drama in this one. While the hard-throwing right-hander gave up a two-out double to Brandon Crawford, he was able to get Brandon Belt to ground out to first to end it and lock down a 6-3 victory. We're confident that his recent rough patch will turn out to be a blip.
Julio Teheran yielded three runs in seven innings Thursday in a win over the Giants. Teheran allowed an RBI single to Buster Posey in the first inning and two more in the third on a Posey homer, but he held the Giants off the board the rest of the way. The rookie right-hander scattered seven hits while walking none and notching three strikeouts. Teheran has allowed just six runs over his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 7.31 to 4.84 in the process. He's picking up momentum in fantasy leagues and will try to keep it going next week when he faces the Diamondbacks.

Uggla hit a pair of solo homers as the Atlanta Braves recovered from a stunning last-swing loss by beating the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 on Wednesday. Uggla is 9 for 24 (.375) with three homers and four RBIs during a six-game hit streak. He's raised his average from .163 to .209 during that run.

Mike Minor pitched seven innings of one-run ball Wednesday in the Braves' 7-2 defeat of the Reds. After giving up two homers in back-to-back starts, Minor surrendered one more today, that to Zack Cozart. Still, he was able to overcome that and improve to 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA. Among NL pitchers, only Matt Harvey and Jordan Zimmermann have better WHIPs than his 0.90 mark.
Juan Francisco hit his first career grand slam Wednesday off the Reds' J.J. Hoover. Those two were traded for one another a year ago, so this had to feel especially good for Francisco. The homer was his fifth in 75 at-bats this season. His 28/4 K/BB ratio is less than encouraging, but he's been a nice starter against right-handed pitching so far.
Braves signed OF Brandon Boggs to a minor league contract. Boggs was just released by the Twins over the weekend, but it didn't take him long to find a new opportunity. The 30-year-old will serve as organizational depth.

Craig Kimbrel blew his third save of the season on Tuesday, allowing two solo home runs as the Braves fell to the Reds. The loss was Kimbrel's first of the season, but more concerning is the fact that the fireballer has now blown three of his last five save opportunities. After registering two strikeouts to start the inning, Kimbrel allowed a pinch-hit home run to Devin Mesoraco before Shin-Soo Choo hit his second home run of the night to end the game. Kimbrel has allowed three home runs on the season after allowing just three all of last year. A few chinks in the armor doesn't mean Kimbrel should lose his title as the best closer in the game, but it's at least worth watching to see if his struggles continue in the weeks ahead.
Kris Medlen allowed two runs in seven innings, but he failed to get the win as the Reds came back in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday. Medlen hasn't had much luck this season, as he's 1-4 but has pitched well enough to deserve a better fate in many of his starts. He's not the pitcher he was in 2012, but this year's version is still plenty serviceable for fantasy purposes. Continue to start him going forward, with his next start coming Sunday against the Giants.

The catcher is just 1-for-8 to start the year, but he took little time reclaiming the Braves' starting catcher role and should get better as he plays more. McCann had a down 2012, but healthy and hitting in the middle of a potent Braves lineup, there's reason to believe in the 29-year-old as a bounce-back candidate.

The Braves are willing to live with Gattis' inexperience in the outfield in order to keep his bat in the lineup, but his fantasy value will take a real hit once Jason Heyward (appendectomy) is ready to return from the disabled list.
Batting eighth tonight, Andrelton Simmons went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI to lead the Braves to a 7-4 victory over the Reds on Monday. Simmons struggled to get on base hitting first or second for the Braves, but he's shown nice pop, hitting four homers in 107 at-bats. He now has more homers (seven) in 273 at-bats as a major leaguer than he did in 1,042 at-bats as a minor league (six).

Hudson had a clean line until David Wright slugged a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. An eighth-inning Mets rally then drove the veteran starter from the game. He's 4-1 with a 3.83 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.
Francisco returned Wednesday for the Braves. Francisco was dealing with a mildly sprained right ankle he suffered Friday.
Juan Francisco (ankle) reported improvement Sunday but is not yet ready to play. Francisco was diagnosed with a mild right ankle sprain after leaving Friday's game. It sounds like he'll have a good chance to return to play against his former club when the Braves begin a series in Cincinnati on Monday.
Cristhian Martinez (shoulder) still doesn't have a timetable for his return. The Braves reliever has been sidelined since April 12 with a right shoulder sprain, and apparently it was serious enough that the Braves still don't have any idea when he might be back. The right-hander had a 3.91 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings last year.
Upton went 0 for 4 in Friday's 7-5, 10-inning loss to the New York Mets. Upton has cooled off quite a bit since his blazing start. The slugging left fielder is just 4 for 26 (.154) over his last eight games.
Jonny Venters (elbow) could be cleared to throw off a mound next week. Venters has already resumed a throwing program and is getting closer to returning from the disabled list. He received a PRP injection last month in an attempt to avoid surgery and is hoping for a late-May return.
Craig Kimbrel blew his second save of the season Friday against the Mets. Kimbrel entered the top of the ninth with a one-run lead, but he gave up a long game-tying homer to David Wright and the Mets eventually won it in extras. It was the first home run allowed by the hard-throwing right-hander since August 31 of last season, a span of 25 appearances. Hey, it happens. He should be fine.
Mike Minor gave up three runs in seven innings against the Mets on Friday in a no-decision. Minor gave up a two-run homer to John Buck in the first inning and a solo shot to Lucas Duda in the second inning, but he shut the Mets down the rest of the way. In fact, he sat down the final 18 batters he faced. The young southpaw didn't walk a batter and struck out two and now holds a 3.26 ERA and 0.88 WHIP through his first six starts. He lines up to face the Reds next week in Cincinnati.
Evan Gattis clubbed a solo homer in Friday's loss to the Mets. The solo shot put the Braves ahead in the bottom of the eighth, but Craig Kimbrel was unable able to hold the lead. It was the only hit of the day for Gattis, who also struck out three times and flew out. The 26-year-old now has seven homers in just 88 at-bats, but with Brian McCann (shoulder) nearing his return from the disabled list, it could be a challenge for him to find regular at-bats moving forward.
