Burch Smith gave up five runs and three homers in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Nationals. Smith struck out eight and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the homers. He has a 15.63 ERA after two starts, so his rotation spot is tenuous at best. |

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Padres don't intend to trade Chase Headley. Headley has remained firm in his stance that he doesn't want to discuss a contract extension during the season, but that hasn't caused the Padres to panic. The 28-year-old third baseman won't become a free agent until after the 2014 season, so there is still plenty of time for the two sides to work out an agreement. And if they can't, the Padres can always explore the possibility down the road. |

Carlos Quentin will return from the paternity leave list Saturday. Quentin missed Thursday's game following the birth of his son and was placed on paternity leave Friday. The Padres will have to make a roster move Saturday in order to bring him back. |

Padres designated RHP Thad Weber for assignment. The move clears a spot for Tim Stauffer on the 40-man roster. Weber made three appearances with the Padres earlier this season and owns a 3.93 ERA and 26/4 K/BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings over six starts in Triple-A. He could draw some interest on waivers. |

Padres purchased the contract of RHP Tim Stauffer from Triple-A Tucson. Stauffer, who was limited to one start last season due to flexor tendon surgery, had a 3.16 ERA and 38/15 K/BB ratio in 42 2/3 innings over eight starts in Triple-A. It's not clear what his role will be with the Padres, but he's worth stashing away in NL-only fantasy leagues. |

Burch Smith gave up five runs and three homers in 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Nationals. Smith struck out eight and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the homers. He has a 15.63 ERA after two starts, so his rotation spot is tenuous at best.
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Padres don't intend to trade Chase Headley. Headley has remained firm in his stance that he doesn't want to discuss a contract extension during the season, but that hasn't caused the Padres to panic. The 28-year-old third baseman won't become a free agent until after the 2014 season, so there is still plenty of time for the two sides to work out an agreement. And if they can't, the Padres can always explore the possibility down the road.
Carlos Quentin will return from the paternity leave list Saturday. Quentin missed Thursday's game following the birth of his son and was placed on paternity leave Friday. The Padres will have to make a roster move Saturday in order to bring him back.
Padres designated RHP Thad Weber for assignment. The move clears a spot for Tim Stauffer on the 40-man roster. Weber made three appearances with the Padres earlier this season and owns a 3.93 ERA and 26/4 K/BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings over six starts in Triple-A. He could draw some interest on waivers.
Padres purchased the contract of RHP Tim Stauffer from Triple-A Tucson. Stauffer, who was limited to one start last season due to flexor tendon surgery, had a 3.16 ERA and 38/15 K/BB ratio in 42 2/3 innings over eight starts in Triple-A. It's not clear what his role will be with the Padres, but he's worth stashing away in NL-only fantasy leagues.
Padres placed OF Carlos Quentin on the paternity leave list. Quentin was out of the lineup Thursday following the birth of his new son. He can remain away from the team for 24 to 72 hours.
Everth Cabrera went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and an RBI in Thursday's defeat at the hands of Washington. Cabrera's 13 steals rank second in the National League. A better real-life than fantasy player, Cabrera's value comes in the form of his legs (steals and runs) and eyes (walks). He looks poised to have a career year.
Nick Hundley went 0-for-4 on Thursday to drop his average to .250. Hundley looked like a potential fantasy breakout star in April, batting .329 with a .901 OPS. He's cratered since, going 2-for-33 in 11 May games. Yasmani Grandal's suspension, and Hundley's firm grasp of San Diego's starting catching job, end later this month. A perennial name bandied about in trade talks, expect Hundley to fry on the hot stove this summer.
Edinson Volquez allowed five runs over five innings in the Padres' loss to the Nationals on Thursday. Volquez walked four and struck out seven. After struggling mightily through his first three starts of the season, Volquez posted a 2.59 ERA over his last five entering Thursday. Perhaps he was due for a stinker. He's no better than a matchup play in standard formats. Next week's outing against the Cardinals doesn't look attractive in that regard.
Clayton Richard (illness) will make a second rehab start with Triple-A Tucson. Richard struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball Thursday for Tucson, but the Padres want him to have another tune-up. "He feels good about where he is right now, how his arm feels and how he feels physically in general, from the whole bad virus he contracted," manager Bud Black said. Assuming Richard feels fine in his next outing, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as next weekend.
Logan Forsythe (foot) took batting practice on the field Thursday. It's the first time he's done so since plantar fasciitis in his right foot sent him to the DL prior to the season. Forsythe also took ground balls before Thursday's game. "He's on the field doing baseball activities stuff, so he's on the way back," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He's on the mend." The team hasn't revealed a timetable for Forsythe, but he should be ready sometime next month if all goes well.
Cameron Maybin (wrist) hit in the batting cages on Thursday. It's the first time he's done so since he landed on the disabled list last month with a right wrist impingement. The Padres aren't sure what the next step is for the outfielder, but Maybin said the session went "way, way better" than he expected. "I'm excited," Maybin said. "It's tough watching, but it's also been great watching how great the team has been playing. I'm eager to get back in the mix."
Carlos Quentin is not in the Padres' lineup Thursday due to the birth of his new son. It's not clear if he'll miss just the one game or more. Quentin, who has two homers over his last five games, will be replaced in left field by Chris Denorfia.
Marquis was a bit shaky but managed to limit the damage in Wednesday's 8-4 win at Baltimore. Marquis only allowed two runs despite giving up seven hits and four walks over five-plus innings. He's now won four straight starts while compiling a 2.45 ERA.
Logan Forsythe (foot) will not begin baseball activities this week. Forsythe started jogging a week ago, but evidently he's still not progressing well enough to incorporate baseball activities. The infielder has been on the disabled list all season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot and it sounds like he'll sidelined into June.
Padres manager Bud Black said Tyson Ross will rejoin the rotation once his left shoulder is healed. Ross is obviously healthy enough to pitch, but his left shoulder subluxation leaves him unable to swing a bat, meaning he can only pitch in relief for now. There's no timetable for when he'll be ready to swing again. "We still see him as a starting pitcher," said Black. "But that will be left shoulder related and whether he's physically able to do that. Right now, his strength is improving. In due time, he has to get in a cage."
Alexi Amarista homered, doubled twice and scored three times Wednesday in the Padres' 8-4 win over the Orioles. Amarista has homered in back-to-back starts. He has surprising pop for a little guy, with eight homers, six triples and 25 doubles in 404 major league at-bats. Unfortunately, he still hasn't managed to reach base consistently. The Padres will keep using him as a backup at second base and in center field, leaving him little fantasy value.
Starting for the first time in five days, Kyle Blanks homered and walked Wednesday against the Orioles. Carlos Quentin will probably prove to be a better hitter than Blanks this season, but there's no doubt the Padres would have been better off starting Blanks regularly in his place over the first month and a half. Quentin did have a hit today, though: his popup to shallow right got lost in the sun by Ryan Flaherty. If only he had run it out rather than sulked, he would have had a double instead of a single.
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson. Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.
Quentin hit his fourth homer in Tuesday's 3-2 win at Baltimore. Quentin is just 3 for 32 (.094) in 11 games this month.
Cashner allowed two runs - one earned - and five hits over 7 1-3 innings but didn't factor in the decision of Tuesday's 3-2 win at Baltimore. Cashner is now 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over five starts. He is, however, averaging just 5.7 strikeouts per nine innings during those outings - significantly lower than last year's mark of 10.1.
Padres released RHP Fautino De Los Santos. De Los Santos was designated for assignment by the Padres over the weekend. The 27-year-old made two appearances with Triple-A Tucson this season prior to being placed on the disabled list. He has shown some ability in the past, so assuming he's healthy, it shouldn't be too long before he finds a new opportunity.
Huston Street earned his ninth save of the year Tuesday as the Padres beat the Orioles 3-2. The Padres were trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the ninth inning but managed a rare two-run rally against Orioles closer Jim Johnson. Street then shut the O's down in the bottom of the ninth. He owns a weak 4.60 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 15 2/3 innings this season but still carries very good job security.
Andrew Cashner held the Orioles to two runs -- one earned -- over 7 1/3 innings Tuesday in a Padres victory. Cashner was handed a no-decision because the Padres didn't lock up the win until the ninth inning. Cashner scattered four singles and one double, fanning three and issuing only one walk. He has been mostly solid since moving into the San Diego starting rotation and is a must-own right now in standard mixed fantasy leagues. The Nationals are next.
Clayton Richard (illness) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Tucson on Thursday. Richard has been out since early this month with an intestinal virus that caused him to lose 12 pounds. He should need just the one rehab start before rejoining the Padres' rotation.
Stults went down to defeat in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rays. Stults gave up three runs over 5 1-3 innings. He owns a 4.57 ERA.
Alonso went 2 for 4 in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rays. Alonso leads the Padres with 23 RBIs and is one of the few San Diego players worth owning.
Guzman had his first career grand slam Saturday as a pinch hitter in an 8-7 loss to Tampa Bay. Guzman's four RBIs matched a career high. He had driven in two runs in his first 27 games this season.
Huston Street blew his first save of the 2013 season on Saturday night, surrendering a two-out, two-run homer to Rays third baseman Evan Longoria. It's a devastating loss for the Padres, who clawed back from a 6-2 deficit to take a 7-6 lead into the ninth. Street retired the first two hitters he faced before walking Ben Zobrist to set up Longoria's dramatics. With the loss, Street falls to 0-2 on the season with a 4.91 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. But he's still the closer in San Diego.
Jesus Guzman slugged a pinch-hit grand slam off Jeremy Hellickson in the sixth inning on Saturday. Guzman's blast pulled the Friars even with the Rays at 6-6, though they would end up blowing the game in the ninth inning. Guzman still has a disappointing .236/.300/.345 batting line with one homer and six RBI on the season. He remains a non-factor in fantasy leagues.
Burch Smith was absolutely pummeled by the Rays in his major league debut on Saturday, surrendering six runs on five hits in just one-plus innings of work. Smith walked two and fanned a pair in the brief outing. After getting through the first inning unscathed, the first seven Rays reached in the second, pushing six runs across and chasing Smith from the game. He registered some pretty impressive numbers through his first six starts at Double-A San Antonio this season, but the 23-year-old right-hander has made just seven career starts above A-ball and will have to improve his secondary offerings before he becomes a fixture in the Padres' rotation.
Padres purchased the contract of RHP Burch Smith from Double-A San Antonio. A 14th round pick in 2011, Smith has moved quickly through the Padres' minor league system. He'll make a spot start for Clayton Richard (illness) on Saturday and could push for a rotation spot even when Richard returns. Smith was posting a 1.15 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 32 innings at the Double-A level prior to his callup. He's worth monitoring in deeper mixed leagues.
Padres designated RHP Fautino De Los Santos for assignment. It's just a procedural move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Burch Smith. De Los Santos has a 3.86 ERA in two games with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate this season.
Padres optioned RHP Brad Boxberger to Triple-A Tucson. Boxberger was called up earlier this month and appeared in two games with the Padres. With Burch Smith set to make his major league debut Saturday, he'll be sent down to create a roster spot.

Headley had a 13-game hit streak snapped in San Diego's 6-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday night. Headley, hitting .304 in 21 games this season, was 20 for 50 (.400) with seven doubles, two homers and seven RBIs during his streak.
Will Venable smashed his fifth home run of the season in Friday's loss to the Rays. The first inning blast off Alex Cobb was his only hit in four trips on the evening. He also swiped a pair of bases and scored a run on a balk, after reaching on a strikeout in the third inning. He's always possessed a dazzling combination of power and speed, which has been on display in the early part of the season, as he's hitting .244/.316/.465 with five bombs and seven stolen bases.
Edinson Volquez turned in another strong outing in Friday's no-decision against the Rays, allowing two runs on three hits over six frames. Volquez walked four and struck out three in the game. He departed with a 3-2 lead and in line to earn his fourth victory, but the Friars bullpen was unable to hold on for him. After struggling mightily through his first three starts on the season, Volquez has posted a 2.59 ERA over his last five starts. He remains a decent matchup play when skimming his home starts and looks like an attractive option against the Nationals at home on Thursday.
Headley extended his hit streak to 13 games by going 2 for 4 with a double in Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Miami. Headley, batting .320 in 20 games, is 20 for 50 (.400) with seven doubles, two homers and seven RBIs during his streak.
Marquis went eight innings in a 1-0 win over Miami on Wednesday. Marquis (4-2, 3.48 ERA) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three in eight innings, his longest stint since Aug. 11 when he had a 5-0 shutout at Pittsburgh.
Jason Marquis pitched eight innings of five-hit ball and combined with Huston Street on a 1-0 shutout of the Marlins on Wednesday. A fine outing, even if it was against a Triple-A lineup. Marquis has won three straight starts and lowered his ERA to 3.48. Things are about to get more difficult with road starts against the Orioles and Diamondbacks and a home outing against the Cardinals next on the schedule.
The Padres will call up Burch Smith from Double-A San Antonio to start on Saturday against the Rays. He's taking the spot of the injured Clayton Richard. Smith has made just six starts about A-ball, but he's off to a great start this season, putting up a 1.15 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 31 1/3 Double-A frames. He's worth monitoring in NL-only leagues.

Venable went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs in Tuesday's 5-1 win over Miami. Venable had gone just 2 for 21 (.095) over his previous 12 games before breaking out. Hopefully Tuesday's effort is a sign of things to come.
Eric Stults held the Marlins to one run in 6 1/3 innings to pick up a win Tuesday and move to 3-2 on the season. Stults, also effective against the Cubs last time out, has taken advantage of an easy schedule to lower his ERA from 5.67 to 4.50 in his last two starts. He's playable in NL-only leagues when the Padres are at home, but that's about all he'll be useful for.
Will Venable went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI versus the Marlins on Tuesday. Venable has had a quiet season so far, but with homers in back-to-back starts, maybe he's getting it turned around. It hasn't helped matters that the Padres have faced a ton of lefties lately, which has resulted in him coming off the bench more often than not.

Andrew Cashner held the Marlins scoreless on four hits and three walks over 7 1/3 innings in Monday's 5-0 win. Cashner managed just four strikeouts against the feeble Marlins lineup and had to pitch out of a couple jams early in the game, but overall it was certainly a fine effort from the hard-thrower. The right-hander hasn't piled up the strikeouts so far like you'd expect, but he's looked good in two of his last three outings. He'll be a strong play in Tampa over the weekend.
Chase Headley extended his hitting streak to 11 games Monday, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double in a win over the Marlins. Headley got off to a bit of a slow start after returning from the disabled list, but he's been red-hot of late, batting .381 with two longballs and seven RBI during his hitting streak. He'll continue to be a nice fantasy option at the hot corner.
Cameron Maybin (wrist) is 10-14 days away from resuming baseball activities. Maybin had the splint removed from his right wrist last Friday, but he still needs to regain his strength and range of motion. The outfielder was hitting just .091/.167/.121 with no homers and no steals prior to the injury but offers plenty of fantasy potential when he's healthy.
Gyorko went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 5-1 win over Arizona. After a slow start to the year, Gyorko is batting .340 over his last 13 games.
Volquez allowed one run and four hits over 6 2-3 innings, earning the win during Sunday's 5-1 victory over Arizona. Volquez has now won three consecutive starts while compiling a 2.33 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.
Jedd Gyorko hit a two run homer in Sunday's win against the Diamondbacks. The Padres got back-to-back home runs from Gyorko and Will Venable in the sixth inning, but weren't able to do much else offensively. It was the second home run of the season for Gyorko, who is batting .296 with eight doubles over his last seven games. He should be in for another big week with an upcoming series against the Marlins.

Richard was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Padres due to an intestinal virus. Richard originally got sick at San Francisco two weeks ago, causing a start to be pushed back a few days. He's lost 12 pounds but is scheduled to see a specialist on Monday, manager Bud Black said.
Richard's struggles continued in an 8-1 loss to Arizona on Saturday. Richard (0-4, 8.54 ERA) gave up seven runs over 3 2-3 innings, and is now 0-3 with a 13.09 ERA in his last three starts.
Padres activated RHP Tyson Ross from the 15-day disabled list. Ross posted a 1.71 WHIP and 12/10 K/BB ratio over 14 innings before a left shoulder subluxation sent him to the DL. The Padres will use him in relief for now, as Ross is unable to swing a bat. With a couple off days, the club will use four starters over the next week.

The Padres wanted to get through the ninth with Brad Brach in a 7-3 game tonight, but he was pulled after giving up a hit and a walk to the first two hitters he faced. Street came in and got two outs, but then gave up a homer to Gerardo Parra, making it a 7-6 game. He retired Martin Prado afterwards to record the save. The homer was the fourth he's allowed in 12 innings this season. Last year, he allowed a total of two in 39 innings.
Headley says talk of a contract extension has become a distraction. The slugger says he spoke with team executive chairman Ron Fowler on Friday and explained his position that he didn't want to negotiate during the season.

Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler said Wednesday that he and his front office brethren were preparing "the largest offer" in club history for Headley with plans to officially propose it to the third baseman "before midseason." But Headley, who is currently under organizational control through 2014, wants no part. "We made it abundantly clear [before] that we didn't want to talk about it during the season," the 28-year-old told Brock on Thursday morning.

"We will do an offer that will be the largest offer we've ever made to a player in San Diego history," Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler said Wednesday, "and I think it will be very close to some of the numbers I read in the press." Headley is arbitration-eligible for the final time in 2014. He'll be a free agent heading into the 2015 season if a deal cannot be struck.

Carlos Quentin went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the Padres' 13-7 win over the Cubs on Tuesday. Quentin also doubled twice and scored three runs. The outfielder has good power but his inability to stay healthy -- or on the field in general -- has always limited his upside. There are better plays in most mixed leagues.
Edinson Volquez allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings in the Padres' win over the Cubs on Tuesday. Despite the win, Volquez was underwhelming in giving up seven hits and three walks to Cubs batters. The right-hander had turned in two strong starts previously, making him a frustrating and confusing fantasy option. He's an enter-at-your-own-risk proposition outside of NL-only leagues. He'll get the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Clayton Richard surrendered five runs in 5 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Cubs. Not only does Richard have a 7.94 ERA after five starts, but he has more walks (13) than strikeouts (11) through 22 2/3 innings. The Padres tend to be pretty patient with their veterans, but he really needs to be better next time out in order to keep his spot.
James Darnell (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. Darnell has been out all season with a strained left oblique. Once ready, he is likely to be assigned to Tucson.
Jedd Gyorko is hitting just .247/.316/.318 through his first 95 plate appearances, but went 4-for-12 with two doubles in the Padres' weekend sweep of the Giants. He's hit safely in six straight games, raising his slash from .210/.296/.258 to .247/.316/.318 in the process. That's still not scintillating, of course, but the Padres have given no indication Gyorko will be removed from the starting lineup. Still just getting his feet wet at the big-league level, patience remains the best course of action with one of the National League's top prospects.
Headley went 3 for 3 with a homer and two doubles in Sunday's 6-4 win over San Francisco. Headley entered Sunday batting just .182. Hopefully his latest effort is a sign of things to come.
Chase Headley went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run in Sunday's win over the Giants. Headley, Nick Hundley and Alexi Amarista all homered off Ryan Vogelsong. It was long overdue from Headley, who hasn't looked very good since returning from the DL. He'll look to carry his momentum into next week and will have a plus matchup in a three-game series against the Cubs.
Jason Marquis held the Giants to just two runs over six-plus innings Sunday for his second win of the season. Marquis allowed six hits, four walks, and had three strikeouts. He struggled with his command and benefitted from early run support. Marquis is nothing more than an NL-only option.
Tyson Ross (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson this week. Out with a left shoulder subluxation, it's not clear how many rehab starts Ross will need before being activated. He's not a given to be re-inserted into the rotation when ready.
Blanks had a solid night, going 3 for 6 with an RBI in Saturday's 8-7, 12-inning win over the Giants. Blanks was 0 for 10 in his previous four games.
Alonso was 3 for 5 with three doubles and two RBIs in Saturday's 8-7, 12-inning win over the Giants. Alonso has hit safely in five straight.
Carlos Quentin is not in the Padres' lineup Sunday. It appears to just be a day off. Kyle Blanks is starting in left field in Quentin's place.
