North Carolina wide receiver Dwight Jones has been cleared by the NCAA to play in the Independence Bowl. Jones allowed his name and likeness to be used in association with the promotion of a New Year's Eve party, a secondary violation of NCAA rules. After initially being ruled ineligible for the Dec. 26 game, the NCAA reversed its decision and will allow Jones to play against Missouri. The senior is easily the team's best receiver, grabbing 79 receptions for 1,119 yards and 11 TDs for the Tar Heels this season.
North Carolina's leading receiver, Dwight Jones, violated NCAA rules and has been declared ineligible to play in the Independence Bowl against Missouri. Jones allowed his name and likeness to be used in association with the promotion of a New Year's Eve party. The Tar Heels are seeking his reinstatement for the Dec. 26 game. Jones allowed his name and likeness to be used in association with the promotion of a New Year's Eve party. Should he not be reinstated, his loss would be a major blow to quarterback Bryn Renner of the Tar Heels' offense. The senior has 79 receptions for 1,119 yards and 11 TDs. Erik Highsmith (43 catches) is the only other receiver with more than 11 receptions.
North Carolina junior receiver Dwight Jones enjoying a big start to the season with a new quarterback. One of the big reasons why North Carolina went 8-5 last season amid all the NCAA violations and suspensions to key players was the play of Jones, who caught 62 passes for 946 yards and 4 TDs. He's off and running this season as top target of first-year starting QB Bryn Renner, who took over for T.J. Yates. Jones caught was 6-135-1 a win over Rutgers following 9-116-2 against James Madison.
Despite being held out of contact drills during camp, senior Ryan Houston will be North Carolina's starting running back. Remember Ryan Houston? ACC fans sure do. The bruising back ran for more than 700 yards and 9 TDs as a junior in 2009. He sat out the first five games of what would have been his senior season while the NCAA was looking into academic and other messes that were taking place in Chapel Hill a year ago. Houston, who is coming off shoulder surgery, then redshirted making him eligible for this season. He should carry quite a load as there is little experience on the Tar Heels' depth chart at running back.
North Carolina running back Ryan Houston fractured his shoulder blade in last weekend's spring game, and will undergo surgery Thursday. The severity of the injury won't be known until Houston goes under the knife. While we'd expect him to be back by August, there certainly aren't any guarantees. The 'Heels backfield is a mash unit, and you can expect a lot of RBBC to start the 2011 season.
North Carolina running back Ryan Houston has been primarily a short-yardage specialist but after redshirting last season, he is expecting to be more of an every-down back. Houston certainly has the size to withstand the rigors of being a feature back and did pretty well in 2009 when Shaun Draughn went down with injury. Look for the Heels to lean on Houston as they break in new quarterback Bryn Renner.
As North Carolina prepares to take on Tennessee in the Music City Bowl, they will be without running back Anthony Elzy. Elzy will not be able to participate as he takes care of some academic duties. Elzy had really come on lately and was the centerpiece of the offense so this will definitely hurt the Tar Heels.
North Carolina running back Anthony Elzy ran for just 32 yards on 12 carries, but caught nine passes for 178 yards and a touchdown against North Carolina State. Since taking over for the injured Johnny White (clavicle), Elzy has caught 16 balls for 280 yards. Ridiculous. If you need a late season addition, Elzy looks awfully inviting for the finale with Duke.
North Carolina State quarterback T.J. Yates was 33 of 44 for 411 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to N.C. State. Remarkably it was Yates' third game with over 400 yards, and he has also had four games with under 200. Expect somewhere towards the lower end next week against Duke, as the 'Heels should have more success on the ground.
North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates threw for 197 yards and was picked off four times by Virginia Tech. Easily his worst game of the season, and Yates had only been intercepted four times all season before Saturday. He's had a pretty solid season, but this stinker is what most expected out of Yates all season. He's got rivals N.C. State and Duke coming up, so Yates figures to be serviceable in ACC circles to close out his career.
North Carolina running back Anthony Elzy carried 17 times for 82 yards and a touchdown, and caught seven passes for 107 yards against Virginia Tech. He did have a costly fumble early in the fourth quarter, but that's a lot of yards for a back who was fourth on the depth chart at best to start the season. With Johnny White (collarbone) done for the season, give Elzy a look down the stretch. He gets to play Duke, which can't hurt.
North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates aired it out in Tallahassee to the tune of 439 yards and three touchdowns. It's Yates' second 400+ yard game this season. The 'Heels have shown they can win through the air or on the ground - it's just impossible to know what their poison will be each week.
North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates was just 12 of 21 for 140 yards and two interceptions against Miami. Yates had only tossed one pick all season before last night while doing a terrific job managing the 'Heels. Credit the Miami defense here, as they now have forced ten turnovers in their last two games. Expect to see some of Bryn Renner next week against W&M, but there isn't a quarterback controversy here.
After missing most of the season as part of the NCAA investigation, North Carolina may redshirt running back Ryan Houston. "The resolution is if we need him to win games, we're going to play him," coach Butch Davis said. "In the ideal situation we would like not to." With Johnny White and Shaun Draughn both graduating, Houston should be the feature back next year.
After failing to top 210 yards since his season opening 412 against LSU, North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns at Virginia. Jokes aside, Yates' leadership and ball security have kept the 'Heels together this season. He now has an impressive 11-1 TD/INT ratio, and is a decent middle-tier option in ACC leagues.
North Carolina tight end Zack Pianalto had three catches for 54 yards and a touchdown against Virginia before fracturing his right fibula. We should know a timetable for Pianalto's return later this week. This is simply unbelievable bad luck for Pianalto, who has now scored three times over the past three seasons, while also suffering serious injuries in each of those three contests.
North Carolina announced Thursday night that running back Ryan Houston is cleared to play starting this week against Virginia. The questions here are how quickly Houston will work back into the playing rotation and what effect he will have on Johnny White's carries? Houston was UNC's leading rusher last season.
North Carolina tight end Zack Pianalto had just one grab for six yards Saturday against Clemson. Yikes. Pianalto came in with 26 grabs through four games, and had become a consistent tight end option nationally. We'll chalk this up to a bad game, and expect better results next weekend in Charlottesville.
North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates threw for 164 yards and a touchdown against Clemson. Yates has an impressive eight touchdowns to one interception, but since his opening night 412 yard outburst, he hasn't topped 210 yards passing once. He's a much better option for the Heels than he is for you, and given the lack of mistakes, we won't be seeing hot shot Bryn Renner anytime soon.
North Carolina tight end Zack Pianalto caught seven passes for 95 yards Saturday against East Carolina. That's 26 catches for 251 yards through four games, and despite a lack of scoring, Pianalto is a top tight end for BCS leagues.
North Carolina tight end Zack Pianalto caught seven passes for 62 yards against Georgia Tech. Whether Georgia Tech took away the deep ball, or UNC was simply conservative, Pianalto was consistently open over the middle. A score would have been terrific, but any tight end who gets this many targets is a top option. He may be the best Tar Heel to start next week at Rutgers.
North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates had 410 yards and three touchdowns in a nail-biting loss to LSU. Where in the world did this come from? Without his top two rushers, and top receiver, Yates (for the most part) showed poise, confidence and touch like we never could have imagined. The 'Heels played their butts off, and now have 14 days to sort their roster out - but Yates has solidified himself as a leader and decent option throughout ACC circles.
North Carolina running back, and touchdown scorer extraordinaire Ryan Houston is down nine pounds since last season, and 37 pounds since arriving in Chapel Hill three seasons ago. Houston is a touchdown vulture, scoring 17 times over the past two seasons. Compare that to presumed starter Shaun Draughn's four, and you'll clearly see Houston's value to the 'Heels. And your ACC squad. Johnny White has been the star of the UNC's camp, but Houston may be your safest bet of the three. Maybe the leaner look will yield a few extra carries outside of the 5 yard line as well!
Head coach Butch Davis has announced that senior T.J. Yates will start North Carolina's season opener against LSU in the Georgia Dome. Not overly surprising, and this certainly won't be the last we hear of this battle during the year. Redshirt freshman Bryn Renner will play, maybe as early as the opener. He won't cut into Yates' stats in Week 1, but he could before Halloween.
Following Saturday's scrimmage, North Carolina head coach Butch Davis hopes to announce whether T.J. Yates or Bryn Renner will start at quarterback the 'Heel's opener against LSU. Davis admitted that Yates holds the edge because of experience. Regardless, both QBs will see action against the Tigers, and we may not have a clear cut QB1 for quite some time.
North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates seems none too interested in sharing snaps with hot shot Bryn Renner. "I wouldn't like it but whatever Coach Davis feels is right, I've got to go with it," Yates said, Head coach Butch Davis offered, "We might want to try to play two quarterbacks." Yates knows he has to be better, and more careful this season, and it's tough to imagine looking over his shoulder can help. Renner is going to play a lot of meaningful snaps this season; book it.
With spring practice a week away, UNC coach Butch Davis tried to squash any budding quarterback controversy, stating "T.J. Yates is absolutely the starter. We've won games because he has played spectacular. He has to play like that all the time. He can't make the mistakes that he has made in the past." Uh, way to back track there coach. I'm very high on backup Bryn Renner, but his decision to split time on the diamond this spring is questionable. There is no doubt that Yates starts the season opener against LSU, but the Heels have a defense that is championship-worthy, and if T.J. can't get it done, I'd expect Davis to have a quick hook.
North Carolina backup quarterback Mike Paulus will transfer to William & Mary, where he will be able to play immediately. T.J. Yates grabbed the starting job and wouldn't let go, thus another Paulus is moving in search of playing time.
North Carolina tight end Zack Pianalto (concussion) is listed as probable for Thursday's game against Virginia Tech. Apparently Pianalto's grade of concussion wasn't as serious as those that are often suffered on the gridiron, thus he appears a very good bet to play.
Running back Ryan Houston and the Tar Heel offense got back on track against Georgia Southern scoring 42 points. Houston scored on touchdown runs of one, one and seven yards to finish the touchdown vulturizing day with 56 yards and three scores. After two tough outings against Georgia Tech and Virginia fantasy owners who had high hopes for this Tar Heel offense coming into the season should be happy to see an offensive output like this.
ESPN's Heather Dinich reports that North Carolina tight end Zack Pianalto suffered a foot injury in the win over UConn, and he'll need an MRI on Monday. Hopefully we're not looking at a serious injury for Pianalto, a definite fantasy factor coming off a 7-87-1 performance in the hard-fought win at Connecticut.
Unfortunatley for tight end Zack Pianalto his monster performance in the comeback win for North Carolina against Conneticut will be overshadowed by the Martin Gramatica like end zone celebration he performed after the game tying touchdown he hauled in late in the fourth quarter. Pianalto hauled in an impressive seven passes for 87 yards and touchdown that tied the game for the Tar Heels, but during his end zone celebration Pianalto jumped in the air and landed awkardly on his ankle. He was later taken from the field in an air cast. Keep an eye on Pianalto's injury status as he could become a major receiving threat in a Tar Heel offense already missing jumbo receiver Dwight Jones.
North Carolina Tar Heels starting running back Shaun Draughn amassed 118 yards on 20 carries in a one-sided victory against The Citadel. However, junior wrecking ball Ryan Houston (6'2" 245lbs) put a damper on Draughn's fantasy day taking in runs of 3 yards and 5 yards for touchdowns. Houston finished the game with 45 yards rushing and two touchdowns on six carries. Unfortunately for Draughn owners it appears touchdown runs will be hard to come by unless he begins a habit of scoring from 20 plus yards out. The red zone belongs to Mr. Houston in Chapel Hill. So if you'd like to add the East Coast version of Cody Johnson to your fantasy team, then Houston is your guy.
North Carolina starting quarterback T.J. Yates says he's back at 100 percent following a right (throwing) thumb injury suffered during a raucous game of Ultimate Frisbee this spring. Yates, whom we have pegged as a potential sleeper quarterback nationally, will look to remain healthy in 2009 as injuries have proven to be an albatross during first two seasons in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates sprained his right (throwing hand) thumb playing Ultimate Frisbee on Wednesday. Yes, you read that correctly...Ultimate Frisbee. Yes, you read that correctly...Ultimate Frisbee. The injury will take six weeks to heal, but he should be ready for fall camp.
North Carolina wide receiver/scout team quarterback Anthony Parker-Boyd has been dismissed from the program for violating team rules. Parker-Boyd had very little impact last season, and it's uncertain what role he would've played in 2009.
North Carolina quarterback Mike Paulus may be pondering a transfer. We normally don't like to deal in rumors, but this one seems to have some legitimacy. Paulus appears locked into a backup role behind T.J. Yates, and the fact that the Heel's other quarterback, Cam Sexton, has transferred adds further fuel to the fire that Yates is the clear cut leader to start.
