Virginia running back Keith Payne (ankle) didn't make the trip to Boston College Saturday. His backfield mate Perry Jones started, and rushed 12 times for 67 yards and his first career touchdown. Jones has churned out solid yardage all season, but Payne has been a scoring machine. It's nice to see the young guy find the end zone. Payne may be back for next week's game at Virginia Tech, so don't expect much more scoring from Jones.
Virginia running back Keith Payne has been ruled out of Saturday's game against Boston College due to a "lower extremity" injury. Perry Jones (concussion) is also banged up making UVA running backs untouchable for fantasy owners this week.
Virginia coach Mike London says he's "guarded but optimistic" that running back Keith Payne will play Saturday against Boston College. Payne suffered a "lower leg injury" last week against Maryland. Coach London's indecisiveness puts fantasy owners in a bit of a tough spot. It sounds like the should play, but there is risk.
Virginia running back and touchdown machine Keith Payne was held to just 68 yards on 18 carries against Maryland while failing to score. Only the third time this season Payne hasn't scored. The sledding won't be any easier next week at Boston College. Payne has been too good to bench in ACC circles, but you have to have modest expectations.
Virginia running back Keith Payne rushed 22 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns against Duke. Payne is becoming an automatic two score player, and is now up to 14 on the season. After seeing Miami gash the Maryland rush defense this week, Payne should have no trouble producing next week against the Terps. Start him with confidence.
Virginia wide receiver Dontrelle Inman had ten catches for 239 yards and a touchdown against Duke. Teammate, and UVA's leading wide receiver Kris Burd scored, but caught just three passes for 43 yards. Neither makes for an awful bye week plug in next week at Maryland, but both are too inconsistent to trust.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica had 419 yards passing and four touchdowns at Duke. He was picked off three times, but this obviously was a career high for the Cavalier signal caller. Count your blessings if you owned/started him yesterday, and now promptly find a replacement as there is no way he will replicate these numbers again.
Virginia running back Keith Payne ran 17 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns against Miami. Simply remarkable, Payne has seven scores in his last four games and 12 on the year. He better be in your lineup next week at Duke.
Virginia wide receiver Kris Burd had seven catches for 104 yards against Miami. Who would have guessed? After a white hot start to the year, Burd had just ten catches for 94 yards over his last three games. He's too inconsistent to start weekly, but makes for a nice bye week fill in with the right match up. Kind of like next week against Duke.
Virginia running back Keith Payne had just 69 yards against a bad Eastern Michigan defense. Thankfully, he scored twice. Not what owners, or waiver wire players, had hoped for against this defense, but Payne continues to score touchdowns. That's ten on the season, and he offers UVA's best hope for points next week against Miami.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns against Eastern Michigan. In two games against EMU and VMI, Verica has five TDs and no picks. In his other five games, he's tossed three scores and six INTs. Expect ratios inline with the later next week against Miami.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica was just 15 of 25 for 139 yards and three interceptions before being benched in a blowout loss to North Carolina. Both Michael Rocco and Ross Metheny played, and weren't much better. Unlike at Duke, I think we are looking at a potential change at quarterback in Charlottesville. The Cavs are going nowhere this season and it's time to get some youngsters extended snaps. Let's see if Mike London is ready to make a switch, with Eastern Michigan coming to town, there may not be a better opportunity.
Virginia wide receiver Kris Burd grabbed five passes against North Carolina, but only totaled 37 yards in the blowout loss. Burd's production over the past two weeks has mirrored that of his quarterback - which hasn't been good. With Eastern Michigan on their way to Charlottesville, Burd gets one more chance to produce before we recommend cutting bait. A change at quarterback would probably hurt more than it would help Burd's immediate production.
Virginia running back Keith Payne had 107 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries against North Carolina. After topping the century mark opening weekend against Richmond, Payne has struggled. The touchdowns have been there throughout however, and he is now up to eight on the year. He may be the Cavs best option of many in next week's game against Eastern Michigan.
Virginia tight end Joe Torchia will have surgery on his injured shoulder Wednesday, ending his season. Torchia opened the season with eight catches in his first two games, but only has one over the past three. If you hadn't moved on already, you are now.
Virginia wide receiver Kris Burd had just one catch for three yards Saturday against Georgia Tech. And this is what happens when you rely on a UVA wide receiver. Burd was white hot coming in, but was the focal point of the Jackets' secondary from the get go. He's been too good to bench, especially in ACC-heavy leagues, but it won't be any easier next week against UNC. He won't be this bad, but it's also possible we've already seen Burd's best.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica completed 18 of 31 passes for 239 yards against Georgia Tech. Former UVA coach Al Groh, now GT's defensive coordinator, knew exactly how to limit his former player. After the game, Virginia offensive coordinator Bill Lazor took some heat for his play calling, but also fielded questions on whether a switch under center was considered. It wasn't, but in a season that's going nowhere for the Cavs, it wouldn't be shocking to see a younger QB get a chance at some point.
Virginia running back Keith Payne ran 14 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia Tech. It feels like forever since Payne's four score opening game effort. He's certainly a threat to score every week, but isn't a great option next week against a stingy Tar Heel defense.
Wide receiver Kris Burd is listed as probable against Georgia
Tech this weekend due to an ankle injury on Virginia's injury report. We've seen no other information on Burd's injury so we'll have to assume the above is accurate. Burd has scored in each of the first four contests so far this year and has eclipsed 100 yards receiving three times.
Virginia running backs Perry Jones and Keith Payne were bottled up Saturday against Florida State, combining for just 50 yards on 17 carries. That's two weeks in a row with dismal results, and if the Cavs are going to fall behind as they did yesterday, we'll be looking at a pass happy offense. Stay away until this gets cranked up.
Virginia wide receiver Kris Burd had four catches for 119 yards and a touchdown against Florida State. Burd got loose behind the defense in the 3rd quarter, and outran DBs on his way to a 79 yard score. He's scored in all four games this season, and has eclipsed the century mark in three of those four. He's turning in to a must-start. Did I really just say that?
While the Cavs threw for five touchdowns against VMI, UVA running backs Perry Jones and Keith Payne were limited to 57 and 46 yards respectively, with no touchdowns. The Cavaliers threw for five scores as they got two backups into action early in the second half. A disappointing showing for sure, but it's strictly a result of a blowout, and Payne should resume his touchdown scoring ways soon. It won't be easy next time out against Florida State, but both RBs should be more involved through four quarters.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica was outstanding in limited action against VMI, throwing for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Yes, it was VMI, but Verica has been remarkably solid this season, and is certainly an option in ACC heavy leagues as conference play begins.
Virginia wide receivers Dontrelle Inman and Kris Burd were uncoverable Saturday, combining for 13 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Burd led the way with an 8-119-1 outing, while Inman found paydirt twice while hauling in five passes for 72 yards. Burd has clearly established himself as the top threat in Charlottesville, but Inman is no slouch either, and is probably a better every week option than the 11 or 12 guys who might catch passes for N.C. State.
Virginia tight end Joe Torchia caught five passes for 79 yards in a loss to Southern Cal Saturday night. Yeah, that's not overly sexy, but he's a tight end who has eight catches for 102 yards to start the season. Virginia isn't looking nearly as awful as anticipated, and Torchia is becoming a reasonable option at a weak fantasy position.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica completed 24 of 35 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown in today's win over Richmond. More importantly, he wasn't intercepted. Wideout Kris Burd was the favorite target, hauling in seven balls for 122 yards and the lone touchdown. Verica has been the brunt of jokes this off season, and yes, this was against an FCS opponent. But Verica didn't look like the turnover prone droid he was two seasons ago. If Hawaii showed us anything, Verica may offer a sneaky, yet scary, starting option next weekend in Los Angeles.
Not appearing on the two deep prior to tonight's tilt with Richmond, UVA running back Keith Payne had 114 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries. Payne looks like a clear waiver wire add now for all ACC leaguers. "Starter" Perry Jones did churn out 73 yards on nine carries, but at 6 foot 3, 255 pounds, if Payne is going to show that kind of YPC while maintaining his knack for the endzone, there is no way he sits. No UVA rusher presents a decent fantasy option next week at Southern Cal, but you could consider Payne and hope he scores with frequency.
Of Virginia's three rookie quarterbacks, Michael Rocco appears to be making the best impression on the new coaching staff. This is a little surprising given that Michael Strauss and Ross Metheny were on campus for spring practice while Rocco was attending prom. Marc Verica is the definite starter, but any time a freshman makes noise this early, it's worth noting. The Cavaliers need a face for their rebuilding, and Rocco just might be that guy.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica told The Roanoke Times he's ready to lead. "There's no doubt about it, I am the starting quarterback and this is my offense." Look for an improved Verica and an improved UVA offense, though it's not enough to warrant fantasy consideration for the quarterback or most of the skill talent in Charlottesville.
Virginia quarterback Riko Smalls has decided to leave the program and look elsewhere in search of the ever-elusive playing time. There are a few starting quarterback candidates in beautiful Charlottesville, but Smalls clearly saw some writing on the wall.
Mike London has been named the next head coach at Virginia. London spent the last two years with FCS Richmond, guiding them to 24-5 record. Before that London's background is as a defensive coach, including a stint as the Cavaliers' defensive coordinator in 2006 and 2007. London is known for his aggressive defenses.
Virginia running back Mikell Simpson is questionable Saturday against Virginia Tech after pulling his hamstring in the second half of last week's game against Clemson. Inserting Simpson into your lineup against the Hokies with a bum wheel is obviously something you don't want to do.
Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell was listed as doubtful coming into this week's matchup against Miami, and after warming up before the game he was ruled out with a shoulder injury. It seems if Sewell is healthy enough to dress for the game and practice that his status for next week's game against Boston College looks good, but hopefully you didn't have him plugged in to start today.
Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell (shoulder) is listed as doubtful for this week's contest against Miami. If Sewell is unable to go, Marc Verica will likely get the start.
Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell was knocked out of the loss to Duke, was then replaced by Marc Verica only to later return. The Richmond Times reports that Sewell did have x-rays on his chest. Hopefully Sewell doesn't have anything that will keep him out of action, however no UVA quarterback should receive fantasy consideration at this point.
Virginia coach Al Groh has given no indication on whether starting quarterback Jameel Sewell (ankle) or running back Mikell Simpson (neck) will play Saturday against Georgia Tech. Both have indicated their eagerness to play, but at this point we would have to classify them as questionable.
The Roanoke Times reports that Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell (ankle) was on crutches following the win over Maryland, though the quarterback said the injury wouldn't keep him out of next week's game with Georgia Tech. When healthy, Sewell should only receive backup consideration in ACC leagues.
Virginia running back Mikell Simpson (neck) is hoping to receive medical clearance that would allow him to play this Saturday at Maryland. Great news as it was a scary scene when Simpson went down on Saturday and was taken to the hospital. Coming off a four-score performance in the pummeling of Indiana, a healthy Simpson is a solid fantasy option.
ESPN.com's Heather Dinich reports that Virginia running back Mikell Simpson was taken to the hospital after leaving the field due to a neck injury. Simpson, who had feeling in his extremities, was in the midst of a great game, with 83 yards and four scores. Hopefully the trip to the hospital was primarily a precaution and we hope that he'll recover quickly.
For the second consecutive week Virginia quarterback Jameel Sewell threw two touchdowns, this week the touchdown strikes came en route to completing 24 of his 46 passes for 312 yards. Sewell also ran 23 times for 23 yards and two touchdowns. There is no doubt at this point that Jameel Sewell is the focal point of the Cavalier offense, and potential fantasy owners have to be curious at this point about his increased confidence in Al Groh's new no huddle spread offense. Sewell has led Virginia for two consecutive weeks now with more than 20 rush attempts, but the 46 pass attempts on top of that surely raises at least a few eyebrows.
Virginia running back Mikell Simpson is considered questionable this week due to an undisclosed foot/leg injury.
He has seen carries in each of the last two games despite having the same injury status.
Jameel Sewell will remain the starting quarterback for Virginia, who visit Southern Miss this Saturday. It'd be wise to avoid starting Sewell and his fellow Cavaliers.
With no word on his injury status (foot) many fantasy owners probably avoided playing Virginia running back Mikell Simpson against William and Mary this week. Simpson did indeed play in this contest, but was limited to 32 yards rushing on 5 carries as the entire Virginia offense was shut down by the Tribe.
Take a wait0-and-see approach with Simpson from here. We touted this running back as a sleeper in the preseason, but it can not be a good thing that Simpson only received five carries. Of course, your offense getting shut down by William and Mary is never a good thing either. TCU coming up next week.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Virginia running back Keith Payne has left the team, and there is no word on whether this is temporary or not. Payne was expected to have minimal fantasy impact, though his departure will hurt the team's depth at tailback.
Virginia coach Al Groh hasn't commented on the status of running back Mikell Simpson (foot), though The Roanoke Times speculates that redshirt freshman Torrey Mack could see the start. Al Groh isn't obligated to speak to injuries until Thursday, thus we'll have to wait and see on this one.
Tight end Andrew Devlin has decided to transfer from Virginia and attend Pitt instead. He'll be eligible for the 2010 campaign. UVA's move to a spread attack was the catalyst to Devlin's decision. The Cavaliers moved the tight end to the defensive side this spring and he just wasn't feeling it.
Virginia running back Mikell Simpson seems to have regained his form this spring. "Mikell's playing much faster than we saw him play last year," coach Al Groh said. With Cedric Peerman graduating and Simpson fully recovered from his broken collarbone, he should be big factor this fall.
Virginia quarterback Marc Verica was 14-of-19 and passed for 148 yards and a touchdown in the Cavaliers' spring scrimmage on Saturday. New offensive coordinator Gregg Brandon has installed a no-huddle offense for the 2009 season and Verica seems to be effective in running this new playbook. He was relegated to backup in the last game of the 2008 season, but looks to have regained his starter spot.
Virginia quarterbacks Jameel Sewell, Marc Verica and Vic Hall are splitting snaps and looking to lead the brand spanking new no-huddle spread attack in Charlottesville. This Saturday's spring game will go a long way towards determining whom we'll not recommend drafting this summer.
Virginia running back Mikell Simpson has had a very good spring, and it looks like he's fully recovered from an injury-plagued 2008 season. Simpson, who should emerge as UVA's top tailback, will likely fly under the radar on draft day.
