Virginia Tech WR Marcus Davis ran an official 4.56 forty at the NFL Combine. Davis' 10 yard split checked in at 1.63 seconds. The Hokie receiver's game is built on athleticism, so make sure not to count that "upside" twice. Davis struggles to track the ball downfield and tends to give limited blocking effort, but he could be taken in the sixth- or seventh-round.
Virginia Tech WR Marcus Davis measured 6-foot-3 1/8 and 230 pounds during this week's East-West Shrine weigh-in. CBS Sports' Dane Brugler has likened Davis' receiving upside to Dez Bryant's, and he certainly is built like the Dallas Cowboys' star getting off the bus. Davis has huge hands (10 1/8") and arms that would be suitably long for an NFL left tackle (33 3/4"). We sure wish he were a better football player.
CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler compares Virginia Tech WR Marcus Davis' receiving ability to Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant's. Brugler anticipates Davis testing "very well" at February's Combine in a t-shirt and shorts. Brugler, however, concedes Davis' game tape "paints a different picture," as he had a very inconsistent senior season as a blocker and catcher of the football. Davis is currently participating in East-West Shrine Game practices. He could really benefit from a positive pre-draft showing.
Virginia Tech senior WR Marcus Davis caught four passes for 64 yards against Rutgers on Friday. Davis is going to show very well in workouts, but his impact on the field is not always felt in a positive way. We all know about his skeptical blocking effort, but Davis can really stretch the field vertically. However, the senior's hands are not reliable, so a team will have to keep that in mind when assessing his possible immediate impact.
Virginia Tech senior WR Marcus Davis torched Duke Saturday for 144 yards on five catches and two touchdowns. After the game, junior quarterback Logan Thomas says Davis is "a superior athlete, to anybody on our team even. So yeah, I expect him to win every jump ball." Davis is rough around the edges, specifically in and out of his breaks on routes, but his athleticism is undeniable.
According to SI's Tony Pauline, NFL scouts consider Virginia Tech senior WR Marcus Davis' early season play "inconsistent." Pauline says that Davis was graded as a potential top 45 selection prior to the season due to his combination of height, weight, and speed, but the senior is showing roughness around the edges. Specifically, the Hokie will not come down with the difficult catch every time. The entire Virginia Tech offense has somewhat surprisingly struggled.
Virginia Tech senior WR Marcus Davis recorded four catches for for 129 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's game against Pittsburgh. The majority of Davis' yards came on an 85 yard reception where he broke a few tackles and showcased his straight-line speed to run away from the defense. Davis is an excellent size and speed prospect, but there are questions about his consistency.
Virginia Tech receiver Jarrett Boykin expects to play against Clemson after sitting out last week. Boykin appears to be rounding into form in time for an ACC battle against Clemson that will feature a pair of 4-0 teams. An exciting deep threat the past two season, Boykin was 10-93-1 the first three weeks of this season before sitting out last week's game against Marshall.
Jarrett Boykin, Virginia Tech's all-time leading receiver, will miss Saturday's game against Marshall with a hamstring injury. Boykin, who has 10 receptions this season and a school-record 133 for his career, needs 57 yards to also become the Hokies' all-time leader in receiving yards. His injury leaves senior Danny Coale, who is up there on VaTech's career receiving charts, as the most experienced wideout. A pair of juniors, 6-foot-4 Marcus Davis and 6-foot-3 D.J. Coles have combined for 14 receptions this season.
All-ACC tackle Blake DeChristopher may miss the start of Virginia Tech's season with a strained pectoral muscle. According to the Hokies' training staff, senior offensive tackle Blake DeChristopher will miss four to six weeks due to a left pectoral muscle strain. DeChristopher, who was selected to the 2011 preseason All-ACC team, is questionable for the first two games of the Hokies' season and is projected to be an anchor for an offensive line protecting a new starting quarterback in Logan Thomas. Junior Vinston Painter and redshirt junior Michael Via are currently the leading candidates to replace DeChristopher.
Virginia Tech defensive end Chris Drager has been moved to the offensive side of the ball where he will play tight end.ÿ Drager was actually recruited as a tight end, so he is plenty familiar with the position. The Hokies have some youth at defensive end but are trying to ease the graduation of Andre Smith. Drager has five career catches for 60 yards and could end up being a nice safety valve for new quarterback Logan Thomas.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams has finally decided to join this year's NFL Draft. After his teammate Darren Evans declared, there was much speculation that Williams would follow. Williams is rated as one of the top backs in the draft and should go in the first couple rounds. With Evans and Williams gone, David Wilson just became the feature back for the Hokies next season.
While Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams did not officially say he plans on entering the 2011 NFL Draft, it seems like only a matter of time. “I still haven’t decided that, I have a lot of people to talk to — where I train depends on who my agent is," Williams said when asked if he's hired an agent or training facility. Well that pretty much let the cat out of the bag. Williams plans on making an announcement next week, and we'd be surprised if he decides to return.
In what is great news for David Wilson, Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans has decided to enter the NFL Draft. Backfield mate Ryan Williams is expected to join him. Thanks to Jayson for the tip. Wilson should step right in and perform and for us fantasy goers, this ends the dreaded RBBC in Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams says he has received his draft evaluation and could be taken in the first or second round. Fellow running back Darren Evans says he has been told he could go between the fourth and seventh rounds. If both Williams and Evans decide to make the jump, David Wilson will become a hot commodity.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams tweaked his right hamstring in practice which is the same hamstring that kept him out of over four games earlier this season. There is no word on what Williams' status is for the Orange Bowl. This is not good news for Williams especially considering the presence of David Wilson and Darren Evans in the backfield.
"I think I'll hear I'm a potential first rounder, second rounder," Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams said when asked what where he thought the NFL Advisory Committee would rate him. "I want to hear the same thing. Just whatever's the best decision for me and my family, I'll make that decision at that time. Right now, I'm a Hokie and I have to finish out the Orange Bowl." Based on Williams comments, there appears to be a good chance he won't be back next season.
Virginia Tech running backs Ryan Williams and Darren Evans have submitted their paperwork to have their NFL Draft stock evaluated. "Just my gut feeling, I don’t think both of them will come back," running backs coach Billy Hite said. "But there’s no real rhyme or reason behind it right now." Throw in David Wilson and the Hokies have a crowded backfield, which is probably why Hite feels at least one will leave early. Both are former 1000-yard rushers, but injuries have also hurt both.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams ran 14 times for 142 yards and two touchdown at Miami. The yardage came by way of an 84 yard burst in the fourth quarter, a run I doubt Williams could have made in his first few games back from an injured hamstring. Darren Evans had 14 carries as well, and the Hokies will continue to split carries, but it's nice to see last season's fantasy monster looking like himself again.
Virginia Tech was hoping to have star tailback Ryan Williams return kicks now that David Wilson is dealing with mono. Williams decided he'd "rather not do that" so now the gig belongs to Jayron Hosley and Rashard Carmichael. Seems like somebody has Sunday football on his mind.
Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans led the Hokies with 90 yards on 14 carries against North Carolina. Ryan Williams followed closely behind with 83 yards on 15 carries. Neither scored, but with David Wilson sidelined by mono, this even split should continue, and continue to madden fantasy owners.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams says he likely won't submit paperwork to the NFL Draft committee to see where he would fall in the 2011 Draft. "I highly doubt it because of the season that I had this year,'' Williams said. "I highly doubt it. I'm not really thinking about the draft." Williams appears as though he will come back for his junior (fourth) season. However, he clearly has the NFL on his mind. "As far as draft-wise, I kind of feel like I stamped my name last year with the season I had," Williams added. "Now if an NFL scout were to come and be like, 'You're going to be a first-rounder.' ... I'm just going to talk around. But right now, I'm not worried about the draft. We've still got games left.''
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams said he's 85-90 percent healthy heading into this week's game against Georgia Tech. Williams got a little tune up against Duke in Week Eight and had more time to rest his injured hamstring last week. Look for him to post double-digit carries this week against the Yellow Jackets.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor completed 13 of 17 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns against Duke. He also ran for 47 yards. Taylor is playing the best he ever has, and has my vote as ACC Player of the Year. He'll enjoy a week off before Georgia Tech comes to town next Thursday, and his outstanding season shows no signs of slowing down.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams returned to action Saturday against Duke, and finished with ten yards and a touchdown on six carries. Not overly impressive, but great to see the scoring machine back in the lineup after missing a month with a strained hamstring. He gets a little extra rest before Georgia Tech comes to Blacksburg November 4th, and we should expect a few more carries.
Assuming Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams plays Saturday against Duke, don't expect him to carry a full load. "Since he hasn't conditioned in the last month, being out all this time, he's not going to play 20 or 30 plays," running backs coach Billy Hite said. "I would like to get him 10 or 12 plays. I'm not going to start him right now." The problem for fantasy owners is 10 or 12 plays isn't enough to start Williams, and it also takes away potential carries from Darren Evans and David Wilson owners. The trio should tear Duke's defense up, but production could be spread around.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams has looked good in practice the last two days and should play this week against Duke. "I think he's ready to play," running back coach Billy Hite said after Tuesday's practice. "I thought he was really good yesterday and I thought he was even better today. He made some cuts ... and he looked like the old Ryan Williams today. I’ll ask him again on Thursday, ‘Are you 100 percent?’ and if he says yes then you’re going and playing." It's always dangerous to start a player fresh of injury and Darren Evans is still expected to get the start, but Williams is probably worth a look this week against a suspect rush defense.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor tweaked his right wrist along with suffering a few other bumps and bruises against Wake Forest last week, but is expected to be just fine for Duke on Saturday. "He's sore, but he's healthy," coach Frank Beamer said. It will be interesting to see if Tech decides to run Taylor less with the likely return of running back Ryan Williams. Let's be honest, they are playing Duke, onne of the worst defenses in the country. Don't over think this one and just play Taylor.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns against Wake Forest. Taylor added 31 yards on the ground and another touchdown. He's up to 15 scores on the year, and is a great option against Duke next week. It's beyond time to believe, Taylor my be the second best QB in the ACC behind N.C. State's Russell Wilson.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) is questionable against Wake Forest on Saturday. Williams appears to be making some progress in practice, but odds are he will sit out his third straight game. The Hokies likely won't risk re-aggravating his hamstring if he's not close to 100 percent.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) is "closer" to returning to action. Mark Giannotto of The Washington Post notes that Williams appeared to be favoring his right leg and wore a blue non-contact jersey in practice on Monday, and Giannotto questions whether Williams will be able to play this weekend against Wake Forest. Once again, Williams' official status won't be known until Thursday when Virginia Tech releases their injury report. And once again, this will be an important one for owners of fellow running backs Darren Evans and David Wilson.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for 161 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 127 yards and two more scores against Central Michigan. That's back-to-back 100 yard rushing efforts for the QB, which is providing tremendous value for owners. There aren't many better options in the ACC next week than Taylor against Wake Forest.
Virginia Tech tight end Andre Smith caught just one pass Saturday against Central Michigan - a seven yard scoring strike in the second quarter. Make that three grabs and three scores over the last two weeks for Smith, who obviously is making the most of his limited touches. I wouldn't bet against him scoring again next week against Wake Forest.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) will miss his third straight game this weekend against Central Michigan. A smart move by the Hokies, who shouldn't need their star to get past the Chippewas. Darren Evans looks to be a solid start in all leagues this week, and will remain so until Williams is 100 percent.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer says running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) might return against Central Michigan this Saturday. As usual with Tech, we'll know more on Thursday. Barring Williams being listed as probable on Thursday's injury report, he shouldn't be a fantasy consideration this week.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor had 123 yards passing and three touchdowns while also rushing for 121 yards against N.C. State. Those are numbers we expected to see out of Taylor this season, and you have to love his chances to post a similar line against Central Michigan next time out.
Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans had 160 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries against North Carolina State. We're finally ready to declare Evans healthy. He hadn't looked like the back we saw in 2008 this season, but that is all in the past. It's reasonable to expect Evans to continue to carry the load as Ryan Williams (hamstring) is eased back into the rotation, whenever that may be.
Virginia Tech tight end Andre Smith caught two passes for 14 yards against N.C. State. Both catches went for touchdowns. Don't look now, but Smith is becoming a part of this offense. After just one catch through the first three games, Smith now has six for 58 in the last two contests. It's definitely time to give him a look in ACC leagues.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams will miss his second straight game due to a pulled right hamstring. Darren Evans and David Wilson will again split carries, and should find more wiggle room against the 'Pack than last week against Boston College.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) practiced Monday in a blue, non-contact jersey. His status for this weekend's game will be determined Thursday. Thank you to Virginia Tech for being forthcoming with your injuries. Williams ran sprints at less than full speed, but running backs coach Billy Hite said he is expecting Williams to play. Check back Thursday for an official release from the school.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) has been officially ruled out for Saturday's game against Boston College. It will be interesting to see who the Hokies lean on this week, the cagey veteran Darren Evans or the young buck David Wilson. I'm seeing a coming out party for Wilson.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) has missed practice this week and his status for Saturday's game against Boston College is still up in the air. "He feels so much better (Monday) than what he did yesterday," said running backs coach Billy Hite said. "Coach (Frank) Beamer and (trainer) Mike Goforth will make an announcement Thursday on what his status will be." Reading the tea leaves a little bit here, it doesn't sound like Williams is going to play.
Virginia Tech running back David Wilson, never afraid to speak his mind, said "Unfortunately, Ryan won't be with us this game. That means I’ll be getting more carries again, so I’m looking to improve my performance and keep getting better;” after today's practice. Williams wore a blue jersey to limit his contact, and declined to speak with reporters following practice. We won't have an official declaration from the Hokies until Thursday, but it's safe to look for other options this week.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said that the status of running back Ryan Williams (hamstring) won't be known until Thursday. "We'll list him Thursday on the injury report. We won't know until then what his situation is going to be," coach Beamer said in Sunday's press conference, refusing to elaborate any further. At this point we have to consider Williams questionable Saturday against Boston College.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams is officially being called day-to-day with a pulled hamstring. The school said he won't need an MRI. He'll likely miss a few practices this week, but early indications are he'll be ready to go next Saturday at Boston College. Certainly good news after seeing Williams on crutches on the sideline during the second half yesterday.
Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans looked terrific while rushing for 91 yards and a score on just ten carries against East Carolina. The moment Ryan Williams went down, it seemed as if something changed for Evans. He ran with confidence and authority, and pending an update on Williams' hamstring, is now a must add in all formats. If you owned him to start the season, fingers crossed you were patient.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams was helped off the field with an injury to his hamstring. He put little to no weight on his leg, and the sideline reporter has confirmed he won't return today. He had 25 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Darren Evans replaced Williams, and promptly found the end zone.
Virginia Tech lost at home to James Madison University. Do we need offensive highlights? Tyrod Taylor "led" the way with 124 yards passing and 86 yards rushing, while throwing for a score and an interception. Ryan Williams had 91 yards on 20 carries, but failed to score while Darren Evans had a costly fumble late to go with 27 yards on seven carries. It was raining, but the Hokies scored more against Miami in the rain last year than they did today against the Dukes. Pathetic. The 0-2 Hokies take on the pass happy ECU Pirates next weekend.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams was held to just 44 yards rushing on 21 carries Monday night against Boise State, but did manage to find the end zone three times (once receiving). Besides the three scores, the other positive takeaway was Darren Evans seeing just three carries. It looks like the Hokies are going to feed their stud.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor was darn near perfect in the team's final scrimmage, completing 16-of-17 passes for 319 yards and three scores. Granted, these numbers came at the expense of the second-team defense. However he could have been winging it against the chess team and the stats would still be impressive. Taylor appears ready for the season, beginning with the Labor Day tilt against Boise State.
Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans has heard plenty of questions about his knee injury, but he's pleased to announce again that "It's fixed, I know it's fixed and I'm ready to play football." Evans and Ryan Williams will team to provide the Hokies with maybe the nation's best running back duo, but split carries will likely keep each talent from emerging as one of the nation's top fantasy backs in 2010.
Virginia Tech running back Kenny Lewis has decided not to return to the program. Lewis was behind both Darren Evans and Ryan Williams, and a whole bunch of two-a-days just to stand and watch in the fall probably didn't sound too inviting.
While the Virginia Tech defense breaks in a whole bunch of young starters, the offense is loaded and ready to shoulder the weight. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor tells The Roanoke Times, "The offense is going to have to really step up, play at a high level, especially early." In Taylor, running backs Ryan Williams and Darren Evans, and an experienced receiving corps, the Hokies are indeed loaded offensively. And an opening week test against Boise State will let us know exactly how explosive this unit can be.
Implying that Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor's running was limited as a precaution in 2009, head coach Frank Beamer appears set to take the training wheels off this year, stating "we're much better equipped for our backup quarterback this year than we were last year at this time." Hokie fans must love knowing last years excuse for being conservative was the fear of injury. Taylor rushed for 738 yards two seasons ago, but only 370 last year. There are only so many balls to go around in Blacksburg, but if Taylor can flirt with 500 yards on the ground, bump him up a little in your rankings. He still is just a bye week fill in in BCS leagues however.
Virginia Tech star running back Ryan Williams sat out today's spring game while nursing a bruised knee Injuries are never something you want to read about, but there isn't much to see here. All indications are it was 100% precautionary, and Darren Evans poses much more of a threat to Williams' 2010 fantasy value than this injury does. In case you were interested, Evans carried just five times for ten yards.
Ryan Williams or Darren Evans? Which Virginia Tech running back to draft is a question on everyone's mind. "The fact of the matter is, if Williams remains healthy (a reasonable concern, given his workload and relatively slight stature), it’s going to be difficult to justify taking the ball out of his hands under any circumstances," a writer from the ACC Sports Journal writes. We couldn't agree more. Evans had a great season in 2008, but watching Williams run is something special. However, there is still a concern that Evans will vulture goal line carries, possibly reducing Williams' touchdown output. Despite the concern, Williams is still someone to target on draft day.
According to offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring, Virginia Tech will feature more two back sets in 2010, meaning we'll see Ryan Williams and Darren Evans on the field together. Just how the carries will be split remains to be seen, but this can't make ACC defensive coordinators happy. Hokie fans across the nation rejoice in their often criticized OC's new-found creativity. Kyle Tucker of the Virginia-Pilot has a pretty good interview with the man who calls plays in Blacksburg.
As Virginia Tech opens their spring practice, running back Josh Oglesby will be making the move from halfback to fullback. Oglesby faced an uphill battle to see the field in the Hokies' loaded backfield, so this seems to be his best chance at playing. It also makes David Wilson a near lock for third on the depth chart, putting into question his ability to redshirt.
Virginia Tech star tailback Ryan Williams left Thursday night's Chick-fil-A Bowl with what is being deemed a sprained ankle. Williams ran for 117 yards and two scores in the win, capping an outstanding redshirt freshman campaign for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams (lower leg) was helped off the field in the 3rd quarter of the Chick-fil-A Bowl, and at first glance it didn't look good. Stay tuned as we'll have updates on Williams' status. Trainers appeared to be working on the tailback's ankle.
Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans, who saw his 2009 campaign end before it began due to an ACL injury this summer, is on the recovery track, however he will not play in the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Tennessee. Hopefully Evans can make it back to 100 percent for summer and battle Ryan Williams and David Wilson for carries in a crowded and talented Virginia Tech backfield.
With a 183 yard, four touchdown performance, Virgina Tech's freshman running back Ryan Williams set yet another record. This time the mark for touchdowns by an ACC freshman with 20 total scores. Williams racked up 1,538 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns in 2009, and also added 180 receiving and a touchdown. He will surely be near the top of draft boards everywhere in 2010.
Freshman running back Ryan Williams carried the ball 32 times for Virignia Tech and responded with 120 yards and four touchdowns to raise his season total to 15. Williams has been one of the biggest surprises of the season, sitting third on the spring depth chart he has now rushed for 1,355 yards and 15 touchdowns with one game left against rival Virginia.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor set a career-high mark accounting for three passing scores to go along with his 268 yard day through the air. Taylor also rushed for 81 yards. Taylor's production is still too streaky to be an every week starter on your fantasy team, but in the right matchup he's clearly capable of monster fantasy days.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams turned in his seventh 100-yard plus rushing performance of the season, carrying 23 times for 126 yards and a touchdown. Williams has given Hokie fans and fantasy owners plenty to cheer about in his freshman campaign, and he will no doubt be a name near the top of fantasy draft boards in 2010.
With running back Darren Evans quickly working his way back from knee surgery, Virginia Tech will have a loaded backfield in 2010.
Ryan Williams is on pace to rack up over 1400 yards rushing this year, Evans topped the century mark in 2008 and don't forget about super-frosh David Wilson, who is redshirting this season. While the triple-headed monster will be great for the Hokies, it could be a nightmare for fantasy owners.
Running back Darren Evans is making a quick recovery from his ACL surgery this August. So much so that team trainer Mike Goforth says Evans could return for Virginia Tech's bowl game. It seems like a bit of a risk to bring Evans back so early and we'd expect any impact to be minimal. Evans' quick recovery does set up an interesting debate on who the Hokies lead back will be next season between he and Ryan Williams though.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams rushed for 96 yards on 22 carries Thursday against North Carolina, but was held out of the end zone.
It certainly was for the lack of trying. Williams had five carries inside the 5-yard line including three cracks at if form the 1-yard line.
After much preseason hype, tight end Greg Boone has been noticeably absent from the Virginia Tech offense this season. Boone only has five catches for 52 yards, no pass attempts and no rushing attempts on the year. Offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said the reason for the lack of production is they are using their tight ends more in pass protection and Boone was slowed by a collarbone injury early in the year. But he does want to get Boone taking direct snaps in the "Wild Turkey" offense in the future.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams is listed as probable on the Virginia Tech injury report due to an illness. We have not seen any reports of Williams missing any practice time, so we assume he will play this week against Georgia Tech.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he knew Ryan Williams would be a star when he was on the scout team in 2008. Coaches told him that Williams "was the best back they'd seen." High praise from coaches that have seen some great backs come through Blacksburg. Williams is clearly one of the top backs (this season and down the road) in the country.
Not that an 83 yard performance is anything to overlook, but after last week's game against Duke, running back Ryan Williams of Virginia Tech looked a little more like himself, totaling 159 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as the Hokies blew out Boston College. This is Williams' fourth 100 yard plus rushing performance of the season, and we would expect to see several more as he continues to feast on ACC defenses.
It came from the most unlikely of sources, but it was the Duke Blue Devils that finally slowed down Virginia Tech's freshman phenom running back Ryan Williams. Williams, who was 6th in the nation in rushing yards, was held scoreless and only managed 84 yards on the ground. This wouldn't have been quite the fantasy bust of a day it turned out to be for Ryan Williams owners had backfield mate Josh Oglesby not stolen two scoring opportunities by hitting pay dirt on runs of 12 and 19 yards. Keep an eye on Oglesby's carries within the red zone as this could affect Ryan Williams' value.
Virginia Tech's junior quarterback Tyrod Taylor set a career high passing mark with 327 yards and two touchdowns to help the Hokies avoid a loss to Duke. This was certainly a change for fantasy owners of Taylor, who are normally accustomed to him using his feet to get things done. If Taylor can develop as a passer as well, he will be a dangerous fantasy option.
Randy King of the Roanoke Times speculates that if Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams keeps running the way he has this season (492 yards rushing and eight touchdowns) he could work his way into the Heisman Trophy conversation. While anything can happen, Williams will need to continue on his torrid pace to have his name mentioned in what is usually a popularity contest.
The freshman sensation running back Ryan Williams was at it again for Virginia Tech, this time dismantling the Miami Hurricanes. Williams carried the ball a staggering 34 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns. There shouldn't be any further talk of a running back committee in Blacksburg, as this has officially become the Ryan Williams Show. The only significant carries stolen from Williams in this one were by quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams re-aggravated an ankle injury in Saturday's game against Nebraska. Williams played through the pain but said “it hurt pretty bad.” We don't expect Williams to miss any time, but he could be slowed a bit this week against Miami.
It appears that rumblings of the dreaded running back by committee for Virginia Tech will cease to exist and the job will now be freshman Ryan Williams to lose. In the last second win over Nebraska Williams carried 21 times for 107 yards and a touchdown. His backfield competition of David Wilson and Josh Oglesby combined for six carries and three yards. We know Frank Beamer loves to pound the ball so this is great news for Ryan Williams owners. A stingy Miami defense that just limited Georgia Tech to 95 yards rushing as a team awaits next week, however.
ESPN.com's Heather Dinich reports that Virginia Tech's versatile tight end Greg Boone (shoulder) is listed as probable for Saturday's game with Nebraska. Boone is one of those talented athletes that just doesn't seem to post significant fantasy numbers. Look for a better option.
In only his second game as a Hokie, freshman running back Ryan Williams ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries. The running back battle in Blacksburg is far from over, however, as fellow freshman David Wilson added 160 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Josh Oglesby 60 yards on 12 carries. As a team Virginia Tech finished the game with 444 yards rushing.
Virginia Tech tight end Greg Boone is questionable for this week's contest against Marshall due to a sprained sternoclavicular joint (chest). Look for Tech to rely heavily on the ground game versus the Herd.
Ryan Williams has been named Virginia Tech's starting running back against Alabama. However, running backs coach Billy Hite says Williams, Josh Oglesby and freshman David Wilson will all play "early and often". Three will have to duke it out on the field against one of the country's stingiest run defenses. It will be interesting to see if one of these three can emerge from the pack.
Virginia Tech running backs coach Billy Hite said that Ryan Williams would be the #1 guy if the season began today. As the number of days left before Sept. 5 has dwindled down to single digits this is significant. We're still reluctant to recommend investing too much in Williams, thanks to the presence of both Josh Oglesby and freshman David Wilson.
After losing Darren Evans (knee) for the season, Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer is concerned about his running back position. "Running backs is kinda the one thing right now that's up in the air a little bit," Beamer said. The good news is both Josh Oglesby (foot/hamstring) and David Wilson (shoulder) participated in Wednesday's scrimmage. Wilson ran 10 times for 52 yards and Oglesby carried nine times for 44 yards. Ryan Williams was given a rest and only had two carries for 3 yards.
Virginia Tech running backs Ryan Williams (ankle), Josh Oglesby (hamstring / foot infection) and David Wilson (shoulder) are all expected to return to practice on Tuesday. The trio is fighting to the right to replace Darren Evans, who was lost for the year with a knee injury. All three are worth a draft day flier pick.
As if three injured running backs weren't enough for Virginia Tech, the remaining healthy one, Ryan Williams, went down with a sprained ankle in Saturday's scrimmage. Though except for Darren Evans it sounds like the others will be able to soon return. So we've got Evans lost for the year with a knee. Josh Oglesby with a strained hamstring and an infected foot. David Wilson has a sprained shoulder, and now Williams with an injury that shouldn't keep him out too long. Bunch of bad luck in Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams has been seeing more reps in practice with Josh Oglesby nursing a sore hamstring and foot infection. David Wilson is also limited due to shoulder injury. The injuries to Oglesby and Wilson appear minor and we consider them to have more upside than Williams, who will is more of a change of pace back.
Josh Oglesby is being billed as the starting running back for Virginia Tech following the season ending knee injury to Darren Evans. With all the talk about David Wilson or Ryan Williams, we seem to forget about Oglesby. Oglesby will likely be the one to get the start in the opener against Alabama, but his upside seems limited.
The Virginia Tech athletic department released a statement stating that running back Darren Evans had successful surgery to repair the ACL and trim the lateral meniscus in his left knee. Evans is expected back next spring. At this point we would not recommend holding onto Evans in keeper leagues.
In his third season as the Hokies quarterback, Tyrod Taylor looks to vastly improve his numbers. "It takes about two years for a guy to be ready to play at a high level," quarterbacks coach Mike O'Cain "Prior to the last two or three games last year, I felt like Tyrod was a heckuva athlete playing quarterback. He wasn't a college quarterback yet. He is now a quarterback. He understands the whole picture. He's the whole package. He's ready to go." With Sean Glennon out of the way, the starting job belongs solely to Taylor. Look for a sharp uptick in his production.
Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans has torn his ACL, and he'll miss the 2009 season. This is a huge blow for Evans and the Hokies.ÿ Ryan Williams and freshman David Wilson now become top fantasy candidates heading into the season.ÿ We are liking what we are hearing out of Wilson so far.
Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans sprained his knee during last Friday's practice.ÿ "I'm running on it now," Evans said. "I'm not cutting like I want to. I'm not moving like I want to, but it has gotten a lot better. I'm about 70 percent. It's been getting a lot better each day."ÿ Evans will wear a blue non-contact jersey in practice.
ÿ True freshman David Wilson has been moving up our board this summer and with Evans missing practice time, it opens the door for Wilson establish himself even further.ÿ
ÿ
Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams will have to spend some extra time on his conditioning after failing to pass the running back conditioning test in practice. Running backs coach Billy Hite does not sound pleased with his work this summer.
Williams will have the opportunity to move up the depth chart as a backup to Darren Evans, but this opens the door for freshman David Wilson to work his way into the playing rotation early.
Virginia Tech's talented, multi-dimensional freshman Logan Thomas will begin his career as a quarterback, and he's currently 3rd team behind Tyrod Taylor and Ju-Ju Clayton. The 6'6" prospect has impressed coaches and he's definitely a potential college fantasy football star. Still he sounds like an ideal candidate for a redshirt.
Virginia Tech has reinstated wide receiver Zach Luckett while announcing that one-time QB star-of-the-future Ike Whitaker will not rejoin the squad. Luckett will be a redshirt junior who will look to contribute in the passing game, though his fantasy value is limited. Whitaker's announcement serves as the disappointing conclusion to a college career that began with much promise.
Virginia Tech athletic director Tim Parker has cleared quarterback Tyrod Taylor and safety Cam Chancellor of any wrongdoing involving the use of their photos in promotional material for commercial events held in Hampton Roads. Taylor and Chancellor did not give he promotor of the events permission to use their photos and were not paid for the events they attended. No harm, no foul.
Virginia Tech tailback Ryan Williams was explosive Saturday's spring game, rushing the ball 10 times for 86 yards. Williams also added a 56-yard screen pass in for a score on the first play of the scrimmage. Darren Evans, who sat out with a leg injury, will remain the #1 tailback for VT heading into fall. But look for the Williams to see plenty of carries this fall.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor passed for 188 yards and a touchdown for the losing White team in the spring scrimmage Saturday. Taylor nearly won the contest for his team on a last second scramble, but was touched down at the two yard line on the final play of the game. This young dual-threat quarterback has been steadily improving his game and has the potential of being a high-quality player if he can continue improve his decision making abilities.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer has been very pleased with kicker Matt Waldron, and it appears like this job belongs to the senior. Any time there's a likely starter at the kicker position he at least becomes one to watch, especially in leagues with smaller player pools.
Michigan State running back Caulton Ray backed up earlier praise by coach Mark Dantonio with a strong showing in Saturday's scrimmage. It is not surprising to see Ray and Ashton Leggett move up the depth chart as both run downhill. However, the MSU running back position is still unclear.
