Depth Chart
| No depth chart available |
The No. 1 quarterback job at Pitt belongs to Tino Sunseri, though coach Paul Chryst needs to see more. It was a rough 2011 season for Sunseri as he attempted to adjust to Todd Graham's offense. Graham bolted for Arizona State after one season at Pitt and Sunseri has had to adapt to new coach Paul Chryst's schemes, which have been to his liking as they are more geared toward the type of QB he is and what former coach Dave Wannstedt instituted. Chryst has acknowledged that Sunseri, who will be a senior, is the starter as spring camp winds down. Still, he needs to see much improvement from Sunseri and those currently behind him on the depth chart.
Head coach Todd Graham's dissatisfaction with QB Tino Sunseri has reportedly ''not sit well'' with former Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt. Graham had mentioned that, among other things, Sunseri is not as effective in running the offense as he would like. It is an entirely new system for Sunseri and the Panthers under the first-year coach. Sunseri ranks 79th in the nation in passing efficiency, and led the Panthers to a 4-3 record in the Big East, but Wannstedt says the quarterback is not alone when it comes to the team's offensive struggles.
Pittsburgh quarterback Tino Sunseri went 25-for-34 for 259 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a 33-20 win over Syracuse. Sunseri had the best performance in a game where there were no gaudy statistical days. The junior had a 22-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter then relied heavily on his kicker Kevin Harper (4 FG) and DB Antwuan Reed's TD fumble recovery in the fourth quarter to seal the game. Sunseri now has thrown for 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as the Panthers became bowl eligible.
Tino Sunseri's inconsistent play this season has coach Todd Graham looking at all options for 2012. At times, especially against USF on Sept. 29 and certainly versus Connecticut on Oct. 26, Sunseri has been a decisive, confident and difference-making QB. Then there have been a few games when all of that seems to disappear. Graham's desire is to improve the position in 2012 and the coach will have plenty of options with four scholarship quarterbacks, including star recruit Chad Voytik. Sunseri could win the job again, but there will be plenty of competition. For now, at 5-6, the Panthers need to defeat Syracuse at home Saturday to become bowl eligible. Sunseri has completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 2,174 yards and 9/9.
With Ray Graham gone for the remainder of the season, Zach Brown will be Pitt's featured running back. No surprise here. After all, it was Brown who performed nicely after taking over for Graham against UConn in the Panthers' last game. The Wisconsin transfer is also the only other experienced running back, so this was an easy decision for coach Todd Graham heading into Saturday's game against Cincinnati. For his career, which includes three seasons in Madison, Brown has 1,281 rushing yards and 15 TDs.
Zach Brown took over for the injured Ray Graham and had 114 yards on 21 touches. It is nice having a veteran to turn to in an emergency. And we do mean a veteran. Brown played three seasons (2007-09) with Wisconsin compiling 1,152 rushing yards and 11 TDs. Knowing how stocked the Badgers were in the back field last season with John Clay, Montee Ball and James White, Brown redshirted. He graduated and then transferred to Pitt with one year of eligibility. Since he received his degree, he did not have to sit out a season. With Graham injured during Pitt's opening series, Brown saw his first extended action as a Panther. He was 12-30-1 on the ground and set career highs with 9-84 receiving.
Pitt's Tino Sunseri set a Heinz Field record for college quarterbacks with 419 yards passing in a 35-20 win over UConn. Suneri's passing yards were the most by a Panthers QB since Rod Rutherford also threw for 419 against West Virginia in 2003. Sunseri, who threw two TD passes and ran for a score, also had 40 yards rushing giving him 459 total yards on the evening. All his work came after star running back Ray Graham was lost to a knee injury on Pitt's first series. (The Panthers have been playing at Heinz Field since it opened in 2001.)
Pitt coach Todd Graham said he is sticking with Tino Sunseri as his starting quarterback. Since fall camp, it was Graham's intention to rotate walk-on Trey Anderson in from time to time. The coach has managed to do that the past few games, but Graham is now referring to switching up his QBs as a distraction to the offense. He also acknowledged that Anderson's understanding of the offense, given he has only been with the program since August, is not where it needs to be to run it effectively. (Which makes you wonder why the experiment lasted as long as it did.) Hence, the offense belongs to Sunseri, who has thrown 5 TD passes and 7 interceptions. Pitt hosts UConn on Oct. 26.
Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham insists he's seen plenty of progress with Tino Sunseri operating the offense this season. "There is no doubt he has gotten better every week," Graham said. "Naturally, we are not where we want to be there, or anywhere matter of fact. Sometimes we are so focused on what we have to do schematically that we forget [that] he just needs to manage the game and not turn the ball over." Progress is a relative term, as Sunseri's biggest fault is turning the ball over, where he accounted for three turnovers in Saturday's 31-27 loss to Iowa. It remains to be seen what type of production he's capable of in this system. His 60/658/3 line looks to be a regression from his 2010 averages.
Pitt quarterback Pat Bostick has decided to hang up the cleats and pick up the books as he will forgo his final year of eligibility to work on his graduate studies. Bostick provided good depth behind starter Tino Sunseri so with his departure, the Panthers have little experience on the two-deep.
Pitt receiver Jonathan Baldwin, running back Dion Lewis and fullback Henry Hynoski have all decided to forgo their remaining years of eligibility and enter the 2011 NFLÿDraft. With two major offensive weapons departing, running back Ray Graham now becomes the focal point of the Pitt offense.
Following the recent charges of domestic violence, Pittsburgh has decided to part ways with recently hired head coach Mike Haywood. "To be clear, the university's decision is not tied to any expectation with respect to the terms on which the legal proceeding now pending in Indiana might ultimately be concluded," Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg said in a statement. "Instead, it reflects a strong belief that moving forward with Mr. Haywood as our head coach is not possible under the existing circumstances." You can question the firing of coach Dave Wannstedt and the hiring of Haywood, but you certainly can't question this much deserved firing. Pitt is now back in the market for a new head coach.
Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin backtracked on his earlier comments and says he has not made up his mind on whether he will declare for the 2011 NFL Draft. Based on his earlier comments, I'm not buying it. Obviously Baldwin is taking some heat for slamming the play calling and his quarterback, especially when they still have a bowl game to play.
Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin says he plans on declaring for the 2011 NFL Draft after this season. "Heck yeah I'm leaving," Baldwin told NFLDraftScout.com. "It can only get worse. They had me running a lot of deep routes [this year] and yards were hard to come by. I barely ran intermediate routes; it felt like they were purposely trying to disrupt my draft stock." Baldwin also took a shot at quarterback Tino Suneri, noting that just because coach Dave Wannstedt is gone "it doesn't change my quarterback!" Sounds like Baldwin has had it in his mind all along that Pitt was just a stepping stone to the league and is really bummed that the the team didn't put his goals ahead of theirs this season.
Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin caught five passes for 138 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. Pitt's struggles have hampered Baldwin's big play ability for most of the season, but he reminded us on Saturday why he's one of the most dangerous receivers in the game.
“When you play receiver, it's not going to come when you want it sometimes, it comes in flurries,” Pitt's Jonathan Baldwin said. “So I just have to keep doing things I need to do and everything will work out.” Lack of consistent quarterback play has really hindered Baldwin's production and there are no indications that is going to change as we head into Big East play.
Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt told ESPN.com that he hopes to settle on a starting quarterback by the end of the spring ball. Tino Sunseri and Pat Bostick are the two prime candidates to replace Bill Stull. At this point neither quarterback presents a great deal of fantasy optimism; of course we weren't giddy at Stull's prospects heading into 2009, and he went out and accounted for 23 scores against only eight picks.
Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin has been acquitted of indecent assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. Baldwin allegedly smacked a woman on the butt during a bus ride. I'm going to guess that a sexual harassment video and a whole lot of stairs are in Baldwin's future.
Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin caught six passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns against Cincinnati. Baldwin now has three consecutive 100-yard games, scoring at least one touchdown in each. It was the seventh time this season he has broken the century mark.
Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin caught 8 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown against West Virginia. It will be interesting to see how high Baldwin gets drafted in fantasy leagues next year with yet another new quarterback throwing to him. I don't think it's going to matter - - Baldwin is achieving stud status.
Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin caught 5 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's game against Notre Dame. It was Baldwin's fifth game of at least 100 yards receiving this year. He is a stud.
Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin caught 6 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown against South Florida on Saturday. Baldwin now has at least 98 yards receiving in five of his past six games, and he has scored four times during that stretch. It helps that Pittsburgh has gotten solid quarterback play, but Baldwin is living up to his stud hype on a weekly basis.
Pittsburgh quarterback Bill Stull threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns against South Florida on Saturday. Stull has provided the Panthers with a very solid presence at the quarterback position. The senior has now thrown for 1,654 yards and 16 touchdowns for the year, while only being intercepted four times.
Pitt running back Shariff Harris has been suspended for two weeks for undisclosed reasons.
Harris was battling Dion Lewis and Chris Burns for the starting running back position. Lewis is the favorite to win the job.
Pitt sophomore wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin has been making big plays in practice, and this stems from a new attitude he's adopted this year: "I knew that I didn't do enough last season and I wanted to set the tone for this season right away." At 6'-5", with a world of talent, Baldwin has the potential to be one of the most explosive receivers in college football. He's been held back by a lackluster Panther offense, and perhaps his youth. With his new dedication, 2009 could be his breakout year.
Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt says Bill Stull is still the starting quarterback for 2009. Stull threw for only nine touchdowns in 2008. With a year of experience under his belt, that number should get better, but we don't expect dramatic improvement.
Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt told the Pittsburgh Time Review that a shoulder injury has ended the collegiate career or tight end John Pelusi. Pelusi, a fifth-year senior, was expected to have minimal fantasy impact in 2009.
Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin's preliminary hearing has been set for May 27. Baldwin has been charged with indecent assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. There has been no word of any suspensions for Mr. Baldwin just yet.
Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin has been charged with misdemeanor assault/harassment/disorderly conduct following an incident on April 19. Baldwin's status is up in the air pending an investigation. Baldwin, one of 2008's most physically gifted freshman wide receivers, is expected to play a key role in the offense this season.
Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt told Ray Fittipaldo of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he expects the running back battle to continue through the summer and into the season. Those owners looking for a clear-cut replacement for LeSean McCoy are going to be disappointed. Shariff Harris, Chris Burns and Dion Lewis are all in the mix, but it appears none bring the total package that warrants 25 carries per game, at least not yet.
Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin scored on catches of 57 and 16 yards in Saturday's scrimmage. Baldwin finished the day with three catches for 85 yards. If Pittsburgh can find a quarterback, the 6-5 Baldwin is one of our favorite players to emerge this fall.
Frank Cignetti Jr. was announced as Pitt's new offensive coordinator on Wednesday. Cignetti called it his "dream job." Cignetti only spent one year as Cal's offensive coordinator, so it is hard to gauge his true impact. Cignetti is considered a quarterbacks coach and any help he can provide in this area would be a bonus. Pitt's passing game has been abysmal since Tyler Palko graduated in 2006.
Dave Wannstedt has offered the Pitt offensive coordinator job to Frank Cignetti Jr., who spent last season in the same role at Cal. Cignetti would replace Matt Cavanaugh, who left Pitt for a job with the New York Jets.
Pitt offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh is rumored to be a strong candidate to become the New York Jets' quarterback coach. Head coach Dave Wannstedt said that the offense will not change, even with the recruitment of a dual-threat quarterback in Kolby Gray. And this is why we love Dave Wannstedt.
