| Michigan's Brady Hoke: Notre Dame 'chickening out' |
|---|
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) Michigan coach Brady Hoke has taken the Notre Dame rivalry up a notch. Hoke made a crowd chuckle on Monday at West Michigan Sports Commission luncheon by saying the Fighting Irish are "chickening out" from the storied series. Notre Dame exercised an option in its football-scheduling contract with Michigan last fall to cancel games from 2015-2017. |

Michigan senior WR Roy Roundtree suffered a knee injury last Wednesday and underwent an arthroscopic procedure on Friday. Head coach Brady Hoke put the receiver's recovery timetable at two weeks. Roundtree is the team's most experienced receiver, but his touches dropped significantly last season, from 72 catches to 19. Jerald Robinson will likely step into the starting lineup until Roundtree returns.
Former Michigan senior WR Darryl Stonum revealed via twitter that he has transferred to Baylor. Stonum was dismissed from Michigan in mid-January after he was sentenced to ten days in jail after violating his probation, which stemmed from a DUI arrest. The new charges were triggered after the former Wolverine was pulled over for a traffic violation after his driver's license was taken away. Stonum started 25 of 36 career games at Michigan but has not played since 2010 after redshirting last season to work through his off-field issues. As a sophomore, he recorded 49 catches for 633 yards and four touchdowns, but his two DUIs may be the most meaningful stat. Stonum will be allowed to play immediately for Baylor after enrolling as a graduate student.
Ray Roundtree's move back to flanker from split end should result in increased opportunities. Roundtree caught only 19 passes last season under the direction of first-year coach Brady Hoke and OC Al Borges. In 2010, Rich Rodriguez's final season in Ann Arbor, he caught 72 passes. The difference in numbers was due to a change in responsibility, particularly an emphasis on downfield blocking. The move to flanker, where there is a void with the departure of Junior Hemingway, should open things up again for Roundtree as a pass catcher.
Michigan dismissed Darryl Stonum after the receiver was in violation of his probation. Stonum has had one too many run-ins with the law, which is unfortunate because coach Brady Hoke planned to use him as a key contributor on offense and special teams next season much like former coach Rich Rodriguez did in 2010. Stonum was redshirted this past season after catching 49 passes for 633 yards and averaging 23.3 yards on 22 kick returns in '10. As a graduate student with one year of eligibility remaining, Stonum is free to transfer anywhere without sitting out a season.
Both of Junior Hemingway's receptions went for touchdowns in Michigan's 23-20 overtime victory against Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. Hemingway's touchdowns covered 45 and 18 yards. The senior doubled his season's total of TD receptions and he finished the year averaging 20.6 yards on his 34 catches.
Michigan coach Brady Hoke indicated that senior Michael Shaw will likely start Saturday's opener against Western Michigan. After a hand injury limited Shaw in spring drills, the senior has been impressive during fall practice. He saw action in 11 games last season and ran for 402 yards and 9 TDs, including three in a triple-OT victory over Illinois.
Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway caught six balls for 104 yards and two scores (and a two-point conversion) in the wild win over Illinois. Hemingway is getting healthy, and though his performance was overshadowed by Roy Roundtree's big day, this junior may be the best WR option in maize and blue.
Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway caught nine passes for 134 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's loss to Iowa. Hemingway has been inconsistent this year, but a performance like this versus Iowa is encouraging. Never-the-less, it's hard to rely on any Michigan wide receiver on a weekly basis.
Michigan wide receivers Roy Roundtree and Junior Hemingway both went over 100-yards receiving with a touchdown on Saturday. While no Michigan wide receiver can be considered a weekly start, they are proving themselves threats when teams stack the line to stop Denard Robinson.
Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stonum caught just three passes on Saturday, but did so for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the win over UMASS. Stonum had just 67 yards receiving coming into the game but seems to be developing a rapport with Denard Robinson. He is one to watch.
Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway (hamstring) is doubtful this week against Maine. If you're looking for an out-of-the-box wide receiver pickup for this week, take a look at Roy Roundtree. Look for Roundtree to emerge as Denard Robinson's favorite target in the coming weeks.
Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stonum spent three nights in jail for probation violations in June. Violations included failing to submit to random alcohol testing, leaving the state without consent and failing to report to probation officers. Apparently Stonum didn't think the probation rules applied to him so he got to spend a couple wonderful summer nights in a Washtenaw County jail cell. No word of any further punishment from coach Rich Rodriguez.
Getting caught up on some odds and ends, Michigan quarterback Nick Sheridan has one more year of eligibility left, but he has elected not to use it. Sheridan was a square peg in a round hole in the Michigan offense, but he was a veteran and his leadership will be missed.
The University of Michigan Athletic Department announced that the NCAA has found five major violations stemming primarily from exceeding allowed practice-time limits. The University will go before the NCAA in August, which will cast a cloud over the opening to fall practice.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor (shoulder) will miss Saturday's game against Ohio State. The tough Minor must be in a world of pain in order to miss this game against Ohio State, his last in Michigan Stadium.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor (shoulder) did not practice on Tuesday and is considered doubtful this Saturday against Ohio State. Not having Minor is big blow to the U of M offense. In a bit of good news, Carlos Brown (knee) looks to be getting healthier and should see plenty of carries this week along with Vincent Smith.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez told The Detroit News that running back Brandon Minor is "day-to-day"ÿdue to a shoulder injury. This potential loss hurts Michigan much more than fantasy owners who have likely given up on the oft-injured but talented tailback. The hard-running Minor could really help move the chains against the Buckeyes, allowing the Wolverine defense more time to rest between touchdowns allowed.
Michigan running back Carlos Brown (both knees) is expected to play in Saturday's game against Wisconsin. Brown's injury concerns, combined with the possibility that Brandon Minor plays and a tough road opponent, makes the senior a risky start.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor is now dealing with a shoulder injury in addition to his high ankle sprain. His status for the Wolverines' game against Wisconsin is unknown. Minor ran well in the loss to Purdue on Saturday, though there is not a more injury-plagued back in the country.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor tweaked his tender ankle late in Saturday's contest against Purdue. Minor showed why he could be a top fantasy back last week with 154 yards and three scores, but it's hard to invest in a player that spends as much time on the trainer's table as he does.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor, who has spent the majority of this season on the injured list, broke free for 153 yards and three touchdowns in Michigan's loss to Purdue. I think I can speak for every Minor owner when I say: It's about time. It was Minor's first 100-yard effort since September 12th against Notre Dame. Check your waiver wire - he's probably there.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said that barring any setbacks, senior tailback Brandon Minor (ankle sprain) will start this Saturday against Purdue. Based on his injury history it's hard to give Minor the fantasy thumbs up in anything other than deep Big Ten leagues.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez told AnnArbor.com that running back Brandon Minor is still bothered by a high ankle sprain. It's time to give up on our dreams of one week where Brandon Minor is completely healthy. It just isn't in the cards.
Michigan running backs Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown have both been deemed "probable" for the game with Penn State. This Big Ten slugfest would seem to cater more to Minor's running style, however each brings considerable fantasy risk due to the opponent and likelihood of split carries.
The Detroit News reports that Michigan expects to get starting center David Molk back for Saturday's game with Penn State. Molk is the key cog on the Wolverine offensive line, and his return is a definite positive for the Michigan offense.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor told Ann Arbor.com that he's getting "close to 100%." It wouldn't be a week in college football if we didn't have another update on Minor's never-ending quest to reach that magical 100% mark. For those who've just joined us: Minor is a talented, hard-working back who can't stay healthy.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor will be limited in practice this week as he continues to nurse a high ankle sprain.
Another day and another Minor injury report. He is one of the toughest runners in college football but always seems to have an injury of some sort.
Michigan running back Carlos Brown was deemed "fine" for this Saturday by head coach Rich Rodriguez. Brown's concussion kept him out of the game against Iowa. Brandon Minor ran strong in Brown's absence; once again Carlos Brown is seeing injuries limit what could be a very productive campaign.
Michigan running back Carlos Brown (concussion) will not play at Iowa; in fact he won't even make the trip. Look for Brandon Minor to carry the load against the Hawkeyes, who possess a front four that can make life miserable for tailbacks.
Michigan running back Carlos Brown missed practice with an undisclosed injury, and coach Rich Rodriguez told AnnArbor.com that back Brandon Minor is healthy and may see his first start against Iowa Saturday night. Brown and Minor were held in check against Michigan State, and the Iowa defense does pose quite the challenge as well. Brown looks like one to sit, and if you must start Minor we recommend crossing your fingers.
Michigan quarterbacks rushed the ball 16 times last Saturday against Michigan State, compared to just 10 carries by the running backs. Coach Rich Rodriguez's explanation was they were behind most of the game and needed to throw the ball. I'm not sure when being down by two scores or less means you had to abandon the running game, but the Wolverines better get it going if they expect to avoid another road loss at Iowa on Saturday night.
Michigan running backs Carlos Brown and Brandon Minor split 23 carries in the Wolverine win over Indiana. Brown carried 11 times for 83 yards and a touchdown while catching a 61 yard touchdown pass. Minor carried 12 times for 50 yards and a touchdown. Watch this situation closely.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said that the status of running back Brandon Minor (ankle sprain) will be a "game-time decision" this week. It's looking like Carlos Brown will see the majority of snaps, and coming off 187 yards rushing and two scores against Eastern Michigan, he looks like a good play.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor's disappearing act last week was due his nagging foot/ankle injury. It looked like Minor finally got over the injury bug in week two, only to spend most of Saturday on the sidelines against Eastern Michigan. Minor says he will be ready against Indiana this week, but it is becoming increasingly tougher to know if Minor will play each week.
Michigan RB Carlos Brown ran for a career high 187 yards with two scores in today's win over Eastern Michigan.
Brown's day was highlighted by a 90 yard TD run in the 2nd quarter, while Brandon Minor spent most of the day on the sidelines, apparently a coaches decision. This is not an encouraging turn of events for Minor owners.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown in the win over Notre Dame. It's not always pretty with Brandon Minor, but it usually moves the chains. He's a very nice back that will produce consistent fantasy numbers provided he can remain healthy.
Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway (sprained ankle) is listed as doubtful for this Saturday's game with Notre Dame. It'd be wise to look elsewhere for wide receiver assistance.
AnnArbor.com reports that Michigan running back Brandon Minor is listed as "probable" for this weekend's clash with the Irish. Minor's presence will help the ground game, and his tough style could eat up some clock, thus keeping the prolific Irish attack on the sidelines. Even with his probable status, Minor does remain a risky start outside of Big Ten leagues.
Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway told AnnArbor.com that his ankle is "fine" and he'll play against the Irish this Saturday. It appears that Hemingway and freshman quarterback Tate Forcier have developed an early rapport, to the point that Mr. Hemingway is a solid start in Big Ten leagues.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said that running back Brandon Minor (ankle) is questionable for this Saturday's opener with Western Michigan. Minor's injury really opens the door for veteran Carlos Brown, who has suffered through injuries during his time in Ann Arbor,ÿto finally make a seriousÿimpact. Owners looking for last-minute running back help may want to look to Mr. Brown.
Michigan has hired an outside firm to investigate whether or not the football program violated NCAA rules regarding offseason workÿand practices during the season. Several Michigan players reported to the Detroit Free Press that they routinely went over the 20 hour practice limit per week.ÿ There has been no timetable put on when the investigation would be complete.
Michigan had a full dress rehearsal scrimmage on Friday, and the Detroit Free Press reports it was running back Carlos Brown that stole the show, scoring two times and busting a long run in the fourth quarter. We've been all over senior Brandon Minor this off-season, though the speedy Brown has definite ability of his own. Brown has struggled with injuries during his career in Ann Arbor, and at times he's been lost in the shuffle. However he could definitely emerge as a factor in Big Ten leagues.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor (undisclosed) was back to full speed and participating in contact drills on Thursday. Minor saw light work the last few days after being involved in a minor car accident. Minor has potential to be a top fantasy back, but injuries seem to always be a concern.
Ann Arbor.com reports that Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway has made some nice strides this off-season, and coach Rich Rodriguez and the rest of the Wolverines are counting on a good season from their receiver. Even with the talented Martavious Odoms teaming with Hemingway, it's hard to see too much fantasy production out of the Michigan wide receiver spot. Only Darius Reynaud comes to recent memory as a wide receiver that put up fantasy-worthy numbers in Rich Rodriguez's scheme.
AnnArbor.com reports that Michigan running back Brandon Minor saw very little work in practice on Friday, and part of this was precaution following a minor car accident involving the senior back. Minor should be good to go on Monday at the latest. Minor is our third-rated Big Ten back behind only Evan Royster and John Clay, and clearly Michigan will take its time with its offensive heart and soul.
Details of Justin Feagin's dismissal have been released. The former Michigan quarterback was involved in a cocaine deal gone bad. Suffice it to say, Feagin won't be heading to Appalachian State anytime soon as well.
Coach Rich Rodriguez doesn't seem to have an iron fist when it comes to punishment, but trying to start a cocaine ring is certainly grounds for dismissal.
ESPN sources say that ex-Michigan quarterback Justin Feagin may transfer to Appalachian State. Feagin didn't figure into the Wolverines' plans this fall, and this became abundantly clear when he was asked to leave the program.
Addressing comments from a rival coach that teams have caught up to the spread, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez went on the defensive. "I could care less what he says," Rodriguez said. "Everybody's opinion is an opinion...Because of the so-called spread, there's so many variations of the spread that's different, it's going to be an easy mark -- 'They're not winning because of the spread.' It ain't the spread, it's the execution of it." Even though he's only had one full year to install his spread option system, Rodriguez will be on the hotseat if the Wolverines post a sub .500 record again this fall.
Reports are circulating that Michigan wide receiver/quarterback Justin Feagin will not return to the team. We've not yet learned a reason for this departure.ÿFeagin, a longshot quarterback possibility last August, had little impact in 2008, and his role wasn't expected to increase much in 2009.
Michigan quarterbacks coach Rod Smith tells the Detroit Free Press that anyone who assumes the quarterback job is already Tate Forcier's is mistaken, as Denard Robinson and Nick Sheridan will compete as well during camp.Aÿ Assuming all quarterbacks stay healthy we still can envision a scenario where all three play a role this season.Aÿ Robinson is the burner and Sheridan has the most familiarity with the system, while Forcier seems to be closest to the total package of the three.Aÿ
Michigan running back coach Fred Jackson is downright giddy about the Wolverines' running back depth for 2009. Brandon Minor, Carlos Brown, Michael Shaw, Vincent Smith as well as few others, all figure to see carries this fall. Minor is the lead horse right now, but how much they will split up the workload will need to be closely monitored.
A great deal of attention has been given to the ballyhooed freshman Tate Forcier, but Michigan junior quarterback Nick Sheridan has no plans of donning the headset just yet. Coach Rich Rodriguez appears eager to let Sheridan, Forcier and fellow freshman Denard Robinson battle it out during camp. The smart money remains on Forcier, but as Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit News references, Nick Sheridan built a lot of character while he and Michigan went through their struggles in 2008.
"Which is a shame because Nick (Sheridan) should be mentioned," Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said when asked about the current quarterback situation. "Nick's not conceding the job. He's going to compete for it. If you ask the coaches, Nick Sheridan is going to be in the mix. Denard (Robinson) and Tate (Forcier) will be, as well." Despite all the hype surrounding Forcier, we fully expect Sheridan to see some time under center this season. Unfortunately for Nick, the new guys fit Rodriguez's system better, so his minutes will be limited.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez says that as long as running back Kevin Grady doesn't slip up again, he is back on the team. Grady, a top recruit out of high school, will have trouble finding carries behind Brandon Minor and a host of other backs.
Michigan quarterback Nick Sheridan (leg fracture) is back to "running and throwing", according to quarterback coach Rod Smith. "It's not a big deal I don't think," Smith said. "Obviously you could always use the reps but he's to the point where he understands what we're doing now." There is a lot of hype surrounding freshman Tate Forcier, and we're certainly buying the excitement. And while we believe Forcier will be UofM's starter this fall, don't count out the veteran Sheridan just yet.
Former Michigan wide receiver Toney Clemons has decided to attend Colorado, and while he'll begin classes in June he will not be eligible for gridiron action until 2010. We'll file Clemons' name away.
Michigan running back Kevin Grady has been jailed for seven days after violating the terms of his probation. Grady failed to report to his probation officer and failed to complete his mandatory 24 hours of community service. Grady came to Michigan as a high profile recruit in 2005; thus far his career has not lived up to expectations.
ESPN is reporting that former Georgia Tech and Michigan quarterback Steven Threet will transfer to Arizona State. The pro-style Threet went to Georgia Tech. Then Paul Johnson brought in his run-dominated attack so he returned home to Michigan, where Rich Rodriguez later arrived and installed his spread attack that values a speedy quarterback. If Arizona State now moves to a wishbone then we may be able to deem Steven Threet the most unlucky vagabond in college football history. He'll sit out this year and then battle for snaps in 2010.
Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stonum was sentenced to 12 months' probation and three days of community service by an Ann Arbor court today. Stonum was suspended for the Oct. 4 game against Illinois for a violation of team rules. No other punishment has been released.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez has high expectations for running back Brandon Minor: "I would be disappointed if Brandon does not have a great senior year." So will we Rich. We have Minor inside our top 25 backs for 2009. If he stays healthy, he could easily end up being one of the top 10 running backs by the end of the year.
Michigan running back Carlos Brown sat out Saturday's scrimmage due to a mild concussion. Brown is expected to be back at practice early next week. Brown has talent but has struggled with injuries through out his career.
It has been confirmed that Michigan quarterback Nick Sheridan is out 4-6 weeks with a fracture to his lower right leg. Sheridan will miss the rest of spring practice but should be fine when practice resumes in August. This is a tough blow for Nick and Wolverines' offense. But it will give Tate Forcier more work this spring, which could be a blessing in disguise.
Reports out of Ann Arbor are that quarterback Nick Sheridan suffered a significant leg injury in practice on Wednesday. While it is unconfirmed, there is speculation that Nick Sheridan may have suffered a broken leg. More information is sure to surface in the coming days, but it does not sound good. The odds of freshman Tate Forcier being the opening day starter just increased.
Michigan wide receiver Toney Clemons has officialy decided to transfer. While he has not decided on a destination, Pittsburgh and West Virginia are possibilities. Clemons caught 11 passes for 101 yards in 2008 and did not see himself as an integral part of the Wolverines offense this fall.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez singled out running back Brandon Minor and defensive end Brandon Graham as the most impressive players so far this spring. "Brandon Minor is off to a good start. He's in great shape," Rodriquez said about Minor. Minor and Graham are two big keys to the Wolverines success in 2009. A healthy Minor means less pressure on the quarterback and big numbers for fantasy owners.
Nick Sheridan took the initial quarterback snap when Michigan opened spring practice Saturday morning. Obviously Rich Rodriguez isn't going to turn over keys to the car to true freshman Tate Forcier without first seeing if he can drive. According to the Detroit News report, Forcier looked sharp. Sheridan, Forcier and David Cone will split snaps this spring.
When Michigan kicks off spring ball on Sunday running backs Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown will enter spring practice healthy and ready to work. Both struggled with injuries at times in 2008, but big things will be expected out of both in 2009. Right now Minor is the lead Wolverine back, but don't sleep on Brown. He's a homerun hitter that will see snaps if he can stay healthy.
Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stonum pleaded guilty to a charge of operating a motor vehicle while visibly impaired on Tuesday. The charges stem from his arrest on Sept. 28 on 3:30 a.m. Stonum was suspended for the Oct. 4 game against Illinois for a violation of team rules. No other punishment has been released.
Last week's rumor has become reality as Michigan quarterback Steven Threet has told "The Michigan Daily" that he will transfer to another school in order to play out his collegiate career. The move to another school will mean Threet will be at his third university as he initially signed with Georgia Tech. Threet has been very unlucky in his choice of schools to date; both programs have moved to offensive systems that don't play to his strengths after he's decided to attend. His departure means freshman Tate Forcier will be Michigan's likely starter in 2009.
The rumors are circulating that Michigan quarterback Steven Threet may transfer. As you know we rarely post rumors, but this one is being widely circulated around Ann Arbor. Two factors to consider here: 1) Threet has already transferred once, from Georgia Tech. It is hard to imagine someone going through that process again. 2) Michigan is bringing in two mobile quarterbacks in the 2009 recruiting class, most notable is Tate Forcier.
Michigan rounded out its 2009 schedule by adding Delaware State on Oct. 17. The twelve game schedule and playing in a conference with an odd number of teams (eleven) causes scheduling quirks for many Big Ten teams. While these games are duds for season ticket owners, they can be goldmines for fantasy owners
