| New Purdue coach takes backseat at 1st spring game |
|---|
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Purdue coach Darrell Hazell took plenty of notes Saturday, and now he'll have plenty to ponder heading into fall practice. Instead of calling plays at Saturday's spring football game, Purdue's new coach spent most of the afternoon walking around in a white windbreaker and black baseball cap analyzing every play from the offensive backfield. |

Purdue QB Robert Marve reportedly "displayed a great arm during position drills" at the school's Pro Day. Gil Brandt believes this is "a performance that could earn the quarterback a longer look from NFL teams as a potential rookie free-agent pickup." He also recorded a 4.78 forty yard dash, all with a damaged ACL in his left knee.
Purdue senior QB Robert Marve will start Saturday against Penn State. Marve played efficiently in backup duty last weekend against Minnesota, but the driving force in the change is likely the four game losing streak Purdue is currently on. The senior has apparently recovered from a damaged ACL in his left knee, the same ligament he has torn on two prior occasions.
Purdue head coach Danny Hope said that there is "a chance" that senior QB Robert Marve plays this week against Michigan. Marve was sideline in the early part of September with a damaged ACL in his left knee, the same ligament he had torn twice before, but the injury does not appear as once believed. Caleb TerBush was suspended for the opener, and Marve started in his place, but TerBush took over the top spot soon after. Both could see snaps in the near future.
AN MRI revealed that Purdue senior QB Robert Marve has a damaged ACL in his left knee, the same ligament he has torn twice. The full extent of the injury is not known at this time. Marve started the first game of the season after Caleb TerBush was suspended for the opener and showed well, but the senior's second appearance against Notre Dame did not go as well.
Purdue head coach Danny Hope announced on his radio show Monday that senior QB Caleb TerBush will start the team's game against Notre Dame. Just an hour before the Boilermakers win over Eastern Kentucky, TerBush was suspended for the game after violating unspecified team rules. Replacement Robert Marve played fairly well in TerBush's absence, throwing for three touchdowns, but the latter started all 13 games last year and will likely keep the job for the rest of the season, barring unexpected circumstances.
Purdue head coach Danny Hope announced that starting senior RB Ralph Bolden will miss the Boilermakers opener against Eastern Kentucky. Bolden is still recovering from an ACL injury he suffered during Purdue's final game of the 2011 season, the third time in five years he had torn the muscle. The senior averaged 4.6 yards per carry last season and accumulated 674 yards on the ground and six touchdowns. Sophomore Akeem Hunt will likely get the nod to start in Bolden's absence.
Caleb Terbush leaves spring game as No. 1 QB for the Boilermakers According to coach Danny Hope, TerBush progressed well last year and as the season went on he gained the confidence needed to be a starting QB in the Big 10. TerBush shouldn't get too comfortable. Behind him are Rob Henry and Robert Marve, two quarterbacks with starting experience of their own.
Running back Ralph Bolden arrested on suspicion of public intoxication. This puts a damper what was a nice spring for Bolden, who was working his way back into shape after missing the last few games of the 2011 season with a torn right ACL. Coach Danny Hope and the university are handling the matter. An issue like this -- more of needing to grow up than anything -- often results in a suspension for a game or two.
This spring has provided Ralph Bolden with the feeling that he can return to full health for the 2012 season after tearing an ACL. Bolden tore his right ACL during the Boilermakers' final regular season game of 2011. It was the second time he tore the ACL since coming to Purdue and the third time since his senior year of high school. He ran for 674 yards and 6 TDs last season and is 1,637/15 for his career.
After tearing the same ACL for a third time late last season, Ralph Bolden is slowly working his way back into shape. At least Bolden made it to the final regular season game last year before the latest ACL mishap. The second time he tore it took place just prior to the 2010 season, a season he missed in its entirety. Bolden contributed a team-leading 674 yards (4.6 ypc and 6 TDs) to a ground game that ranked 33rd nationally last season. The hope is he and another senior-to-be, Akeem Shavers (519 yards), can stay healthy and improve upon last year's numbers together.
Caleb TerBush started all 13 games for the Boilermakers last season, but the spring means compeition. With TerBush and Robert Marve, coach Danny Hope has plenty of experience under center. It will be interesting to see how far Marve pushes TerBush, who threw for 1,905 yards and 13/6 in his first season as a starter. Rob Henry will also be in the mix, but will not see as many reps as TerBush and Marve as he recovers from an ACL injury that cost him all of 2011.
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve could take the field for the first time in almost one year Saturday against Southeast Missouri State. Marve went down with a torn ACL last Sept. 25 against Toledo and is now cleared to play. The Boilermakers have had their issues at quarterback, since this will be a welcome addition. Of course, how many playing time coach Danny Hope gives him is up in the air. Marve, a Miami transfer who was mentioned in the off-season scandal and cleared by the NCAA, is listed behind Caleb TerBush.
The former Miami quarterback was implicated, but there are no issues regarding his eligibility at Purdue. Marve, who transferred to Purdue from Miami after losing his battle with Jacory Harris for the Hurricanes' starting QB job two years ago, has been given the all-clear with respect to his eligibility with the Boilermakers. The Yahoo report concerning the Miami scandal indicated Marve received improper benefits. The senior played four games last season before tearing his left ACL and giving way to sophomore Rob Henry, who is currently atop the depth chart.

Smith was a star for the Boilermakers last year and could have really helped along Rob Henry and an otherwise unproven receiving corps.
Purdue receiver Keith Smith is still awaiting word from the NCAA on receiving a sixth year of eligibiility. “Hopefully, we’ll hear something soon,” coach Danny Hope said. Smith would be a huge addition to the Boilermakers' offense if he's allowed to return.
Purdue receiver Keith Smith is waiting to hear from the NCAAÿon his bid for a sixth year of eligibility. "Hopefully, we'll hear something soon," Smith said. Smith had 91 receptions for 1100 yards and six scores in 2009, but missed most of last season with a knee injury.
Purdue running back Dan Dierking carried 12 times for 126 yards against Minnesota on Saturday. Very hard to start any Purdue running backs at this point. This is the first time Dierking went over 100 yards since September 11th.
Purdue wide out Justin Siller is doubtful this Saturday against Northwestern with an ankle sprain. "It's a bad sprain," coach Danny Hope said. "He's going to be out for an extended period of time. He could be out several weeks possibly." Purdue just can't catch a break this season. They are simply outmanned and should be avoided the rest of the year.
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Rob Henry will likely replace Marve as the starter when the Boilermakers take on Northwestern on Oct. 9.
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve had a MRI on his injured left knee on Monday, but the coaching staff has yet to release the results. It didn't look good for Marve, so don't expect any miracles when the coaching staff does decide to release the results.
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve suffered an apparent knee injury in the first quarter of the loss to Toledo, and coach Danny Hope doesn't sound too optimistic about what the medical people will tell him. A long-term injury to Marve would continue the string of horrible Boiler luck. Purdue has already lost running back Ralph Bolden and wide receiver Keith Smith for the season. Can they start this thing over?
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve (knee) says he'll be fine for this Saturday's game against Toledo. Marve has played well, but still is only an option in Big Ten-only leagues.
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve suffered a leg injury in the first half of Purdue's win over Ball State. Marve finished with 111 yards passing and two touchdowns Marve came back out to start the second half, but then departed for good. With Keith Smith and Ralph Bolden already done for the year, Purdue can not afford to lose Marve. We should have more on Marve's injury as the week moves on.
MRI results revealed that Purdue wide receiver Keith Smith suffered a torn MCL and ACL in his right knee and is out for the season. Tough blow for the Boilermakers. Receivers Justin Siller and Cortez Smith along with tight end Kyle Adams will have to pick up the slack, but Purdue's offense will struggle without Smith.
Purdue running back Dan Dierking gained 102 yards and scored twice as the Boilers handled Western Illinois. Dierking's 14 carries were nine more than those given to Al-Terek McBurse, and it appears that Dierking has emerged as the go-to guy in Ralph Bolden's (knee) absence.
Purdue wide receiver Justin Siller caught three passes for 37 yards and a score on Saturday, a day that saw lead wide receiver Keith Smith lost to a knee injury. Siller is the impressive athlete and one-time quarterback. He may see his role grow considerably should Smith miss a good deal of time, which sadly appears to be the case.
Purdue tight end Kyle Adams could only muster two catches for 15 yards against Western Illinois. Adams was a potential sleeper tight end in Big Ten leagues, though he's only mustered five catches for 36 yards in the season's first two contests. His owners are currently better off with a bunch of Sam Adams.
Purdue wide receiver Keith Smith suffered what some are speculating is a season-ending knee injury in the Boiler win over Western Illinois. This is another tough break for Purdue, a team that previously lost starting tailback Ralph Bolden to an ACL injury prior to the season. Thanks to Eric for the heads up.
Purdue wide receiver Keith Smith caught 12 passes for 80 yards in a loss to Notre Dame. The Irish kept Smith out of the end zone, doing a nice job working on top of him. Don't worry, Smith will see his share of touchdowns this year.
Purdue receiver Keith Smith -- who missed spring due to wrist surgery -- is ready to be a difference maker for the Boilermakers. “They can throw me around wherever they want,” he said. “I can play slot. You can put me in the backfield. I can throw the ball around a little bit. It's going to be fun." Smith is a top receiver that may fly below the radar a tad in your draft. Expect similar numbers in 2010.
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve will be the starter heading into spring camp, according to head coach Danny Hope. The former Hurricane had been battling for the starting job with Caleb TerBush, but ultimately Marve's experience has won out. We currently have him as the 51st-ranked QB, but with solid receivers like Keith Smith, he could outproduce that ranking.
Recently reinstated Justin Siller will likely work at wide receiver this fall and not quarterback. "He makes us a much stronger core," Purdue coach Danny Hope said. "If he's as good as he was a year ago ... he could be a special player. He can really catch, he can run and make people miss. He's older now and a very special athlete." At 6-foot-4, Siller could be a big target for the Boilermakers and with Aaron Valentine graduating and Keith Carlos moving to running back, he could find himself in a starting role very quickly.
Purdue has reinstated quarterback Justin Siller following a year lost due to an academic indiscretion, and he'll have two years of eligibility remaining. With Robert Marve and Caleb TerBush impressing under center, we'd deem it very possible that Siller moves back to running back, a spot he played before making the switch to signal caller late in 2008. In fact in light of Robert Bolden's knee injury, we'd say it's very likely that Siller moves from the quarterback spot.
Miami transfer Robert Marve had a decent spring game for Purdue as he threw 11-of-22 for 160 yards and a 75-yard touchdown completion. Marve impressed more than his numbers show as he dealt with inconsistent pass protection and was rolling out on most of his throws. Marve is expected to pilot the normally potent passing attack at Purdue and is worth a later pick in most drafts.
"They all have room to improve but right now Robert (Marve) is a little bit further ahead from an accuracy standpoint, an experience standpoint and a confidence standpoint," Purdue coach Danny Hope said about his quarterback. Caleb TerBush and Rob Henry are battling Marve for the starting gig, but we'd be surprised if Marve doesn't win the job.
As expected, Purdue's Keith Smith will take off the spring to recover from wrist surgery.
Assuming Smith heals completely from the surgery he should again be one of the top receiving targets in the Big Ten.
Purdue running back Ralph Bolden and Offensive Coordinator Gary Nord has been very impressed with Miami transfer Robert Marve as of late. At the helm of the Boilermakers' offense, Marve should be primed for a breakout season.
Former Purdue starting quarterback Justin Siller could return to the team this fall. "I'm holding a spot for him," coach Danny Hope said. "He's in the driver's seat for that." Siller could compete for the starting quarterback spot, but we currently have Miami transfer Robert Marve penciled in as the starter come opening day.
ESPN's Adam Rittenberg believes Miami transfer Robert Marve is the front-runner to claim the open quarterback job at Purdue. We certainly aren't going to disagree. Beyond Marve, Purdue looks awfully thin at quarterback. As we've stated previously, our money is on this former Cane to win the starting job.
Purdue wide receiver Keith Smith will have surgery next week to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist. ÿSmith played with the injury most of the season. Smith, a junior, finished the season with 91 catches for 1100 and six touchdowns.
Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott threw four touchdown passes in the win over Indiana, completing 21 of 29 for 205 yards. Elliott ends his brief college career with a nice season, tossing for 22 touchdowns. Purdue is not bowl eligible.
The Purdue offense is just a few yards away from having a 3000-yard passer, 1000-yard rusher and 1000-yard receiver. Keith Smith has already surpassed the 1000-yard mark. Joey Elliott is 179 yards shy of the passing mark and Ralph Bolden is 69 yards shy of the rushing mark. Purdue takes on Indiana this Saturday and odds are they all hit their mark. Boilermaker offensive players are a good play this weekend.
Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to Michigan State on Saturday. The loss eliminated Purdue from bowl consideration. Good stat day, tough luck day for the Boilermakers.
Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott threw for 367 yards and two touchdowns while running for another in Purdue's win over Michigan. Elliott's 8 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the ball game.
Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott completed just five passes in 23 attempts for 59 yards in today's loss to Wisconsin. Elliott was bad from the start and never got it going against the Badger defense.
Purdue wide receiver Aaron Valentin caught 10 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns in Purdue's win over Ohio State. The senior now has 453 yards receiving and seven touchdowns for the year. He probably will be a hot free agent pick up this week.
Purdue wide receiver Keith Smith caught seven passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Minnesota. This was the third straight game that Smith has gone over 100 yards with a touchdown.
Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns in the Boilermakers win over Northwestern. This marks two games in a row Elliott has thrown for three scores.
Purdue wide receiver Keith Smith wore a green jersey in practice this week, which is normally reserved for quarterbacks. The move could be a signal that Smith will see some time as the quarterback in the Wildcat formation. Coach Danny Hope didn't come out and say that this is in the plans this week against Northwestern, but it is clear that they are considering it. Anytime you can get some added touches out of your receiver it is a good thing.
Purdue offensive coordinator Gary Nord indicated that Ralph Bolden and Jaycen Taylor are co-number ones at running back: "You can't have enough running backs," Nord said. "I could see us using four or five kids every game." We've projected Taylor to emerge as the leader, but in the new offensive system, there may not be one back that justifies a draft pick in anything but Big 10 leagues.
"Right now, it's obvious (running back) Jaycen Taylor is competing to be a No. 1," Purdue coach Danny Hope said.
Taylor, who missed all of last season with torn ACL, is competing Al-Terek McBurse, Ralph Bolden and Dan Dierking for starting job. Taylor is the front runner to win the job, but split carries is highly likely.
Purdue coach Danny Hope has stated that both Joey Elliott and Caleb TerBush will see snaps during meaningful action this year. Elliot will remain the starter.
Elliot may claim sole control of the QB job after TerBush gains some game experience in the early part of the schedule.
New Purdue coach Danny Hope is convinced that quarterback Joey Elliott is ready to lead his team, in fact he states Elliott battled Curtis Painter down to the wire last summer. Fantasy drafters should keep in mind that this is not Joe Tiller's Purdue offense. We look for a much more conservative attack that places a greater premium on the ground game. In factÿcoach isÿlooking to add more of a "shotgun run game"ÿinto the scheme.
ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported that new Purdue quarterback Robert Marve tore his ACLAÿa while back and best case has him practicing with the Boilers in October. Marve is expected to lead the Purdue quarterback field heading into 2010, though valuable scout team time missed does hurt.
ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported that new Purdue quarterback Robert Marve tore his ACL a while back and best case has him practicing with the Boilers in October. Marve is expected to lead the Purdue quarterback field heading into 2010, though valuable scout team time missed does hurt.
New Purdue coach Danny Hope is traveling the state chatting it up with a captive audience of alums and fans this summer, and during his barnstorming he's singing the praises of starting quarterback Joey Elliott. Hope has complimented Elliott's ability to think his way through a game, and the coach believes the Boiler offense will be in good hands in 2009. We believe this Purdue team will lean more on the run than in the past, and the days of Drew Brees winging it for 500 yards are a definite thing of the past.
Purdue quarterback Justin Siller has been dismissed from the university through 2009-2010 due to an academic violation. Siller was expected to battle with Joey Elliott for the right to lead the Boilermakers' offense. It now appears that Elliott is the clear cut starter in West Lafayette.
Purdue quarterbacks Justin Siller and Joey Elliot will compete for the starting quarterback spot this spring. Neither has the edge through three practices. Elliot is the forgotten man in this race. He missed the second half of 2008 with a separated shoulder, but is in the mix for the starting job this spring.
Purdue TE Kyle Adams was back on the practice field after missing nearly all of 2008 with a knee injury. "I don't think (Adams) has missed a beat. He may have gotten better," new coach Danny Hope said. Adams is someone we had high expectations for last year. Now that he is back at practice, we'll carry those expectations over to 2009.
Purdue running back Jaycen Taylor is still battling back from last August's knee surgery, though he's expected to take part in some spring drills. New coach Danny Hope is even optimistic that Taylor will see some contact by the end of spring. A healthy Taylor will likely be the rock for the Purdue running game, and he could emerge as a factor in Big Ten leagues.
Purdue running back Jaycen Taylor estimates that his surgically repaired knee is at about "60 percent". It is questionable whether he will participate in contact drills this spring. After missing all of 2008, Taylor does have a redshirt to burn, making him eligible for 2009. Taylor was one of Purdue's top running backs before he tore his ACL last summer. We'll have to monitor his status to see if he can return to form in time for this fall.
