| Houston at Temple to kickoff new Big East schedule |
|---|
Houston will visit Temple on Sept. 7 to play the first conference game in what will be the new Big East football league. The Big East released its football schedule Wednesday after months of trying to figure out what schools would be in the rebuilding conference in 2013. The conference was hoping to have a 12-team league with Boise State and San Diego State anchoring a western division. |

Memphis backup quarterback Cannon Smith was arrested Wednesday on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Smith was probably not going to see much playing time with Ryan Williams as the starter and this certainly does not help his cause.
Miami transfer and current Memphis wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie finally showed what he was capable of with six catches for 109 yards and a touchdown against Marshall. MacKenzie credits the success to being moved from the slot to an outside receiver position. MacKenzie is quite a talent and with quarterback Ryan Williams back with him next year, he is a definite sleeper candidate.
Memphis wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie had a big game against Marshall as he hauled in six passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. McKenzie was expected to have a huge year but just had not put it together on the field.
Memphis backup quarterback Cannon Smith was injured in the game against Tennessee and was not at practice earlier this week. If Smith is out, that leaves just freshman Ryan Williams at quarterback. Smith is not a fantasy option but does provide depth for the Tigers.
Miami transfer Cannon Smith has been named the starting quarterback for Memphis, successfully beating out true freshman Ryan Williams. Statistically speaking, Williams outplayed Smith quite a few times this offseason, but Smith has won the job and has some decent playmakers around him in Lance Smith and Jermaine McKenzie.
It appears the starting quarterback job is a two man race between Miami transfer Cannon Smith and freshman Ryan Williams. Incumbent Tyler Bass will be used as a "different dimension" which basically means out of the Wildcat and could audition as receiver. In other news, former Wisconsin tailback Lance Smith is progressing well after breaking his leg. The starting quarterback for the Tigers is only worth a look in C-USA leagues while Smith could be a nice sleeper option if he mends.
As draft season approaches one player to watch is Miami transfer and current Memphis wide receiver, Jermaine McKenzie. McKenzie had a great spring, capped off by a 72-yard reception in the spring game. The Tigers are under new management and just graduated their top two receivers so the talented McKenzie could find himself a starting spot. McKenzie should be considered a sleeper pick in all-120 leagues.
Miami Hurricanes transfer, Cannon Smith, had a terrible showing in his scrimmage for the Memphis Tigers finishing 13-of-27 passing for 108 yards and 3 interceptions. Smith was expected to take over the reigns of the Tigers but it appears he has some work to do. This is one transfer that you may want to wait a year on.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele rushed for 232 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries in Friday's 33-30 overtime loss at Tulsa. Steele ends his collegiate career with his second 200-yard game and a total of 1,239 yards and 15 touchdowns in his senior campaign.
ESPN sources are saying that Memphis will hire Washington Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray. An official announcement is not expected to come until sometime after Memphis' season finale against Tulsa on Friday.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele rushed for 107 yards and two scores on 20 attempts in Saturday's 31-21 loss to UAB. This marks Steele's fourth 100-yard game this season. Steele is averaging just over 116 yards in his last four games, all losses for the Tigers.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries in Saturday's 56-28 loss to in-state rival, Tennessee. Steele has rushed for well over 100 yards in three of his last four games. Both of Steele's scores came later in the contest, against the Tennessee second-string defense.
Memphis senior wide receiver Duke Calhoun is having a great final college campaign, and coach Tommy West tells Go Vols Extra that Calhoun is "a different player than he's ever been." Calhoun seems a great bet to continue to make big plays down the stretch.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele ran for 240 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries and also caught a touchdown pass in Saturday's game against UTEP. With this performance and full workload, Steele is showing that he is 100 percent healthy after missing two previous contests and playing sparingly at Central Florida last week with a bruised knee .
Memphis coach Tommy West said running back Curtis Steele (bone bruise) should be 100 percent when the Tigers take on UTEP on Saturday. This is good news as the struggling Tigers' run offense could use a boost against the 114th ranked rushing offense.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele (bone bruise) is expected to play this week against Central Florida. Steele has missed the last two games, but he looks like a good fantasy start this week against the Black Knights.
T.J. Pitts, and not Lance Smith, will start at running back for Memphis (in place of the injured Curtis Steele) as the Tigers welcome Tennessee-Martin to town. Pitts missed all of 2008 with an injury, and he'll certainly share time with Lance Smith. In fact we still see the talented Smith getting the majority of carries, even though he'll be the 2nd back into the game for Memphis.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele will miss two to three weeks with a knee bruise. With Steele out Lance Smith and T.J. Pitts will carry the load against Tennessee-Martin. Smith is not a bad option if you are hurting at running back this week.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele injured his left knee in Saturday's game against Middle Tennessee State. We have been unable to unearth an official status report on Steele. Unofficially, leave him out of your lineup this week against Tennessee Martin.
Memphis senior running back Curtis Steele rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in the Sunday loss to Ole Miss. Steele, who rushed for 1,223 yards in 2008, averaged 4.7 yards per carry against a tough Ole Miss defense. He should be closer to last season's 5.6 yards per carry against Conference USA competition.
Memphis running back Curtis Steele is "just doing all the right things now" said coach Tommy West. Steele has had an impressive camp and is cemented as the Tigers' starting back.
As a junior college transfer who saw his first game action last year, Steele is an impressive talent who deserves fantasy consideration. We're looking for another 1000+ yard season out of Curtis in 2009.
