| SMU adds former Kentucky coach Hal Mumme to staff |
|---|
DALLAS (AP) Hal Mumme joined the staff of SMU coach June Jones on Wednesday, bringing together two men behind some of the most prolific passing offenses in NCAA history. Mumme, who will be Jones' assistant head coach and passing game coordinator, was head coach at Division II McMurry (Texas) the past four seasons, producing three straight winning seasons for a program that had gone eight years without one. |

SMU quarterback J.J. McDermott threw for 240 yards and had one touchdown passing and rushing in the Mustangs' 28-6 Compass Bowl win over Pitt. McDermott's 50-yard connection with Darius Johnson gave the Ponies a 7-0 lead on their first possession. Later in the opening quarter, his one-yard run upped the lead to 14-0. McDermott completed 16-of-25 passes and the bowl game marked only the third time in 13 games this season he did not throw an interception. McDermott finished his senior campaign with 3,422 yards and 17/16.
SMU quarterback J.J. McDermott threw for 356 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 38-17 win of Central Florida. McDermott, who won the Ponies' starting job from school record-setter Kyle Padron, is emerging as a big-time gunslinger in the Lone Star State. The last three weeks, the former New Mexico State signal caller has thrown for 1,062 yards and 9 TDs -- and SMU won each game.
SMU wide receiver Aldrick Robinson has already gone over 1,000 yards receiving for the second time in his career but could not muster much against UCF in the C-USA Championship game. Robinson caught just three passes for 34 yards but did score his team's only touchdown. Robinson is gone after this year which helps the draft stock of Cole Beasley and Darius Johnson for 2011.
From the slot, Cole Beasley damaged the East Carolina defense with nine catches for 119 yards and a score while Aldrick Robinson hurt them on the outside with 129 yards and a touchdown on five catches. Kyle Padron has certainly found his top two receivers with Robinson being a solid WR1 and Beasley making a good WR3.
SMU wide receiver Aldrick Robinson did it again as he had his sixth 100 yard game of the season. This one occurred against UTEP, and was officially 131 yards and a touchdown. Robinson is one of the most consistent wide receivers in the country and should be started every week.
SMU kicker Matt Szymanski is out for the game against UTEP with a pulled leg muscle. Szymanski has been a productive kicker this season but will need to ride the pine against the Miners.
SMU receivers Aldrick Robinson and Cole Beasley both eclipsed 100 yards receiving against Tulane with Robinson going for 182 yards and a touchdown with Beasley adding nine catches for 135 yards. Robinson is the outside threat and Beasley mans the inside which makes defenses pick their poison against Kyle Padron and the Stangs.
SMU receiver Aldrick Robinson had his fourth 100-yard game of the season this time against Houston as he hauled in five passes for 101 yards and a score in the loss. A-Rob can run a bit hot and cold but is a solid start most weeks.
With Kyle Padron slinging the ball, SMU had two receivers go over the century mark. Darius Johnson had eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown while Aldrick Robinson hauled in five passes for 118 yards. Robinson is a proven commodity while Johnson is a rising star.
SMU wide receivers Cole Beasley and Aldrick Robinson terrorized the Rice defensive backfield as both eclipsed 100 yards receiving. Beasley had eight catches for 158 yards while Robinson had six catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Robinson is Kyle Padron's favorite outside target while Beasley is dependable across the middle.
SMU playmaking wide receiver Aldrick Robinson was bottled up for the most part as his team fell to TCU. Robinson hauled in five passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. Robinson is still a top target for Kyle Padron but has been inconsistent this year. Keep an eye on if he can bounce back and start steadily producing.
SMU wide receiver Aldrick Robinson had four catches for 111 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Washington State. Robinson was quiet in the first two games of the season, but ripped through the Cougars secondary for a career-high three trips to the end zone. It's always tough knowing which wide receiver in a spread offense will excel every weekend, but Robinson's track record shows he has some upside as a WR2.
SMU linebacker Patrick Fleming has been moved to outside receiver and is currently listed in the two-deep at the position. Fleming is sized much like a tight end at 6'4, 242-pounds and should be in for a few red zone passes. If he is listed as a tight end in your league then he is worth a look.
With the early departure of Shawnbrey McNeal to the NFL draft, SMU coach June Jones says running back recruits Darryl Fields and Kevin Pope are expected to contribute right away. Fields is the higher rated recruit according to Rivals.com. However, it would be a mistake to assume any of the Mustang running backs can match McNeal's 1188 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell has decided to transfer. This doesn't come as a huge surprise. Kyle Padron looked very good and Mitchell would have had a tough time getting his starting job back. Not quite Wally Pipp and Lou Gehrig, but you know.
SMU running back Shawnbrey McNeal has decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2010 NFL Draft. McNeal's decision comes as no surprise as he previously stated that he wanted to do what is best for his ailing mother.
SMU running back Shawnbrey McNeal says he will explore his NFL options and needs to do what is best for his family. "I want my mom to have a better life than the one she has been living all these years," said McNeal. "Every junior wants to look into the possibility of going pro after three years. I just want to see what gives my mom a better chance at a better life." Shawnbrey's mother suffers from diabetes. Those don't sound like words of a man that is going to return to school. And if he can get an NFL paycheck, we wouldn't blame him.
SMU has accepted a bid to play in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24. SMU's opponent is still to be determined. It is unknown if Bo Levi Mitchell (shoulder) will be available for the contest, but we will get the opportunity to see wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders on last time. And June Jones gets to return to the island.
SMU running back Shawnbrey McNeal had 147 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in their 26-21 win over Tulane on Saturday. This marks McNeal's fourth 100-yard game in his junior season and the first time the Mustangs will be bowl-bound since 1984.
After entertaining the NFL last year, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is not so quick to end his career at SMU. "I want to leave here and be one of the greatest receivers who has ever come through this program," Sanders said. "If we go to a bowl game, it means a lot more." SMU is currently sitting at 5-4 with three winnable games left (UTEP, Marshall and Tulane). I'm sure there are a lot of college football fans that wouldn't mind seeing Sanders in a bowl game this year as well.
Based on reports from last week, Bo Levi Mitchell (shoulder) could return this week against UTEP. Mitchell probably could have played last week, but the coaching staff has been taking every precaution. It is unclear at this point who will get the start, Mitchell or Kyle Padron.
SMU running back Shawnbrey McNeal is dealing with a minor shoulder sprain, but should be ready versus Rice this weekend. The Owls' are ranked 110th in the country in rush defense. Assuming we continue to get positive reports, this is one of those games where you'll want to play McNeal.
SMU freshman quarterback Kyle Padron threw for 354 yards and two scores as he stepped in for the injured Bo Levi Mitchell, and led the Mustangs to a nice win over Tulsa. Padron's performance may mean that Mitchell's return to the starting lineup may not be so automatic. This is a situation to monitor, as any college quarterback to run a June Jones offense has the ability to light up the scoreboard on any given week.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell (shoulder) will be a game-time decision. If Michell can't go, Kyle Padron will get the start. This is not something fantasy owners want to tangle with.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell missed practice Tuesday and has been diagnosed with a slight tear to the labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. Coach June Jones hasn't ruled out the possibility of Mitchell playing Saturday against Tulsa. However we would consider Mitchell highly questionable and expect to see Kyle Padron under center.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell will have an MRI to determine if there is any additional damage to his dislocated left (non-throwing) shoulder. Coach June Jones mentioned that Mitchell could play this week against Tulsa. If Mitchell can't go, true freshman Kyle Padron will get the start. We could consider the latter the most likely option.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell did not play the final three quarters of the game against Houston after being sacked and injuring his non-throwing shoulder, according to the Dallas News. Mitchell was 5 of 9 passing for 40 yards prior to the injury and was replaced by a rotation of backups, Kyle Padron and Braden Smith, for the remainder of the game. It is unclear the severity or implications of the injury at this time.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell says the big plays are there for the taking, they just need to relax and execute. "It's there, everything is there – it's just us," Mitchell said. "We've just got to relax, especially at the start. A lot of our big plays are right there." Averaging two touchdown passes a game, Mitchell's numbers have been solid but not spectacular so far this season. With a considerably easier schedule down the stretch, look for that to change, starting this week against Houston.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell only threw for 266 yards and two scores, but Aldrick Robinson was a fantasy star, catching four balls for 125 yards and a score. SMU was expected to provide more fantasy fireworks, though owners should be pleased with Robinson's best game of the season.
SMU running back Shawnbrey McNeal managed just 26 yards on 13 rushing attempts in Saturday's loss. However, he did gain 70 yards and a touchdown on three receptions against TCU. After starting the season with a 158 yard performance that averaged 8.3 yards per carry, McNeal's production on the ground has been on a steady decline. His average is down to 4.5 on the year.
SMU wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders caught 18 passes for 178 yards Saturday against Washington State. He was the main target for quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell (40-57-424) whose big day was marred by four interceptions. While Sanders and Terrance Wilkerson (two touchdowns), posted big numbers, fellow wide receiver Aldrick Robinson was relatively silent, posting just 30 receiving yards on two catches.
SMU wide receiver Aldrick Robinson (ankle) missed practice on Thursday, but coach June Jones expects him to play at Washington State on Saturday. While he should play, he is clearly not 100 percent. So factor this in when you're weighing your wide receiver options for this week.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell is nursing some sore ribs but threw in practice on Wednesday. SMU is playing Washington State, which is an automatic start for opossing skill players. Sore ribs or not.
SMU wide receiver Aldrick Robinson (ankle) is expected to play this Saturday against Washington State. Despite the injury, Aldrick is worth the fantasy risk playing against the Cougars' defense.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell led the Mustangs to a 35-33 victory over UAB, throwing for 353 yards, three touchdowns and two intercptions on 28 of 47 passing. Mitchell's main target in the game was senior wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who had 148 yards and one touchdown for SMU.
SMU running back Shawnbrey McNeal, in his first action since transferring from Miami, ran 19 times for 158 yards and a score in the win over Stephen F. Austin. SMU spent a lot of time and energy trying to make sure the NCAA would allow McNeal to play, and it appears the effort was made with good reason. A back with his talent, in an offense that is so wide-open, will find some gaping holes at his disposal. McNeal immediately becomes a factor.
SMU receiver Justin Willis has quit the team after he was unable to crack the starting lineup. Not surprisingly the four SMU starters will be Emmanuel Sanders, Aldrick Robinson, Terrance Wilkerson and Cole Beasley. Willis had the makings of a fantasy star when June Jones came to town last year. Off the field issues and a position switch crimped those plans. We wish Justin all the best.
SMU wide receiver Aldrick Robinson (hamstring) returned to practice on Tuesday. He had missed a few while the coaching staff played it safe. Robinson is one of the nation's top fantasy wide receivers, and it's good he's back on the field.
"He still plays like a youngster sometimes, but he's made some great throws," SMU coach June Jones said of quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. "As you're learning [the offense] you've got to stay in your progressions. He's been pretty consistent this year about it, but he's got to take it from practice to the game." With a year under his belt, Mitchell should improve on the 24 touchdowns he threw in 2008.
SMU is still waiting for word from the NCAA on their request for immediate eligibility for former Miami running back Shawnbrey McNeal. McNeal is waiting on academic and NCAA clearance, and as August is nearly upon us it doesn't look too promising.
SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was 12-of-16 passing for 108 yards in Saturday's 40-play spring scrimmage. Mitchell, who was recruited out of high school by Hawaii, seems to be flourishing in (former Hawaii) head coach June Jones' system. He lobbed 24 touchdown passes in 2008 and should better that number in the upcoming season.
A bit of an old story, but SMU wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders worked mostly with the offense last week. He will still be used in "key situations" on defense this fall. This should put to rest any lingering doubts of Sanders "permanently" moving to defensive back.
ESPN's Graham Watson follows up on the Emmanuel Sanders situation, stating that sources have told her that Sanders will indeed still play wide receiver this fall as expected. As we mentioned last week, it was too early to write off Sanders. Jones is not going to move one of his top wide outs that easily. The injury to Justin Willis also helps Sanders stay on offense.
Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders stint at cornerback this spring may be more serious than first thought. "My dream this year is to have at least one interception a game," Sanders said. We are still trying to dig into the how serious the move is. Don't hit the panic button just yet until we see how this plays out. That said, Sanders is becoming a risky pick.
Spring practice is in full swing at SMU, and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is getting a taste of his new double duty role, taking part in defensive back drills for the first time Thursday. Sanders is expected to only see spot duty at defensive back this fall. Still there is nothing positive about this for fantasy owners.
SMU head coach has released nine football players from their scholarships for "failure to adhere to our department policies and/or team rules." None of the players released had a fantasy impact, and only one, redshirt freshman running back Ben Goldthorpe, was an offensive skill position player. This is significant because it's becoming more and more clear that June Jones is molding the program to his fashion, and it's likely that recruiting in the fertile state of Texas is allowing him to drop the hammer with greater ferocity than he did while at Hawaii.
SMU coach June Jones is going to work out wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders with the secondary this spring in hopes of getting him on the field more often. Those owners that saw Sanders catch 68 balls for 958 yards and nine scores in 2008 would probably like to see Sanders drinking Gatorade and winking at the ladies while the defense is on the field and not playing cornerback. We'll have to see how this plays out this spring. On a side note, it is good to see that Sanders is ready for spring practice after being suspended for the last two games of the season.
SMU backup quarterback Logan Turner has decided to transfer to Southeastern Oklahoma, a D-II program. Turner likely saw a SMU career backing up Bo Levi Mitchell, so he decided to move on.
