Ball State coach Pete Lembo told The Ball State Daily News that he hopes to name a starting quarterback (Kelly Page or Keith Wenning) by the end of April. Lembo told the Daily News that his offense is "a no huddle offense, but not a spread offense" and that "the screen play is an important part of his offensive scheme." The thought of beautiful Ball State screen passes is enough to get this guy on the next bus to Muncie to check them out!
Ball State poached the FCS ranks to get their new head coach and found Pete Lembo of Elon. Lembo replaces Stan Parrish, and in his five years at Elon he was 35-22. This is as good a hire as the Cardinals can expect.
Ball State senior running back MiQuale Lewis suffered a separated shoulder in the game against Buffalo, but head coach Stan Parrish said he would play this Saturday, possibly at wide receiver. Lewis is just 254 yards away from being the school's all-time leading rusher so it is unfortunate that his season could end on this note.
Ball State head coach Stan Parrish does not know whether he will field Kelly Page or true freshman Keith Wenning at quarterback when the Cardinals take on Purdue this weekend. Page was pulled out of the game last week against Liberty, and Wenning played really well in his place. Whatever player gets the start is not really worth considering in any league.
Ball State senior running back MiQuale Lewis could only muster 42 yards on 13 carries against Southeast Missouri State. What should cause more concern than the 42 yards is the fact that the Cardinals ran it 55 times, yet Lewis only saw 13 of the looks.
Last year Kelly Page was statistically nightmarish for the Ball State Cardinals, but according to head coach Stan Parrish, "He's much, much improved in directing our team. He's a lot more confident and a better player now. I'm really pleased with the way he's played so far." Page probably won't be much of a fantasy factor this year but could be someone to keep an eye on for next year. However, improvement from Page could mean bigger fantasy seasons for MiQuale Lewis and Briggs Orsbon.
In an effort to get more of his talented tailbacks Cory Sykes and MiQuale Lewis on the field at the same time, Ball State head coach Stan Parrish has said he would like to run the Wildcat formation at least 20 times a game. Lewis has been working hard to learn the formation as he is the triggerman. Between Wildcat carries and normal carries, Lewis could see quite a workload in 2010 which makes him primed for a comeback.
Ball State tight end Madaris Grant has been denied another year of eligibility by the NCAA. The team was hopeful he had suffered enough to warrant another year, but apparently the NCAA requires two "debilitating injuries" and poor Grant only tore his ACL once. The Ball State Daily News reports that Zane Fakes is first in line at tight end now.
Ball State tight end Madaris Grant (knee) is still awaiting word from the NCAA on his petition for a sixth year of eligibility. “Getting him back is critical,” coach Stan Parrish said. If Grant wins his appeal (and Parrish is confident he will)he could be a solid sleeper candidate.
Although it was speculated that he would, Ball State running back MiQuale Lewis has officially received a sixth year of eligibility. Lewis most likely will not return to his form two years ago when he ran for 1,736 yards and 22 touchdowns but should help the offense as quarterback Kelly Page matures.
Ball State running back MiQuale Lewis has told the Ball State Daily News that he has been awarded a fifth year of eligibility, though Ball State has not received the official letter saying this is the case. Great news for Lewis and Ball State. Look for improvement from an offense that suffered a great deal of growing pains in year one under coach Stan Parrish.
Ball State sophomore RB Cory Sykes rushed for 70 yards on 16 carries against Western Michigan. With MiQuale Lewis set to graduate, Sykes should take over next season on what figures to be a somewhat improved Cardnials offense. At 5-foot-7, 157 pounds, no one will ever confuse Sykes with Jerome Bettis, but Sykes is shifty, and can make big things happen. If you like drafting MAC players, make sure you remember this guy next August.
Ball State running back MiQuale Lewis was held to 45 yards on 22 carries today against Ohio. Amazing what a week can do. When not facing a terrible run defense in Eastern Michigan, Ball State hardly mustered an offense today. Last week's hot waiver pick up Cory Sykes only carried the ball four times for 22 yards. The Cardinals are off until Nov. 12, but stay away from any and all Ball State players against Northern Illinois.
Ball State running back MiQuale Lewis ran 26 times for a monstorous 301 yards and one touchdown tonight against Eastern Michigan. Patient Lewis owners are finally grinning ear to ear in a tough season for the Cardinals. Until quarterback Tanner Justice (two for 10, one yard passing!) can help out, Lewis looks like a marginal play next week against Ohio.
Sophomore Ball State running back Cory Sykes had a career night, rushing 23 times for 208 yards and three scores in Ball State's victory over Eastern Michigan. MiQuale Lewis' night might overshadow Sykes' effort in what has been a miserable season for Ball State. Sykes came in to tonight with only 26 carries for 104 yards on the season. File his name away for next year.
Ball State quarterback Kelly Page will have surgery to repair a broken thumb on his right (throwing) hand and will miss the rest of the season
With Page out, Tanner Justice will take over the starting duties. But the Cardinals will need to find a way to get running back MiQuale Lewis on track if they expect to get into the win column. This week against Eastern Michigan, who ranks 118th in rush defense, should help in their quest.
True freshman quarterback for the Ball State Cardinals, Kelly Page, struggled once more today in taking on the Army Black Knights on the road, finishing the 24-17 loss 12 of 24 passing for 154 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions. Page now has a TD:Int ratio of 2:5 through the Cardinals' first three games of 2009 and has yet to through for more than 200 yards in a game. One upside in today's game against the Black Knights, however; the freshman was able to rush four times for 58 yards and an additional score on the ground.
Ball State tight end Madaris Grant is likely out for the year with what appears to be a torn ACL. There has been no official word on Grant's status; assume the worst for now.
The Ball State offense struggled to find its rhythm in the loss to North Texas Thursday night. Notably, MiQuale Lewis was only able to manage 103 yards against the 105th rated rush defense (2008). The preseason fears that the Cardinals would struggle without quarterback Nate Davis and former coach Brady Hoke came true last night. Lewis is still a solid fantasy back (6.9 ypc). But the Cardinals need to find a way to get the ball out of the hands of quarterback Kelly Page (34 pass atts) and into the hands of Lewis (15 rush atts).
Ball State could potentially use up to three kickers to handle field goals, extra points and kickoffs.
Ian McGarvey put his job in jeopardy after being suspended for spring practice. Steven Schott stepped in and has a good opportunity to see the field this year. Stay away from the Ball State kicking game.
Ball State took no chances this spring with their star running back MiQuale Lewis, holding him out of contact drills and sitting him in the final scrimmage. There was no need to risk Lewis getting injured and you can expect more of the same during fall camp.
"Kelly Page has earned the right to be our No. 1 quarterback heading into fall camp," new head coach Stan Parrish said as Ball State completed spring workouts on Saturday. Page entered the spring as the favorite and there is no reason to believe he won't be the starter when they host North Texas in the opener.
Ball State head coach Stan Parrish says Kelly Page will head into spring practice as the heir apparent to Nate Davis. "I repped him like he was the second all year even though I redshirted him. And then to get the bowl practice... He's got an awful lot of talent, and going into spring I'd say Page is the front-runner for the job," Parrish told ESPN.com. No one can replace Nate Davis, but with Parrish sticking around, we expect the offense to remain the same. Parrish also seems to be high on Page, who redshirted last year. Page is a name to file away in the memory bank.
