BYU had four passing touchdowns over UTEP but those passing lanes were opened by a superb rushing attack led by Josh Quezada, who finished the New Mexico Bowl with 101 yards rushing and a score. J.J. Di Luigi followed with 98 yards and a score. The Cougars leaned on their ground game as Jake Heaps came along, and now they are a very balanced team capable of putting up some big points.
As quarterback Jake Heaps has been getting better, the main beneficiary of his improved play has been wide receiver Luke Ashworth. Against Colorado State, Ashworth had four catches for 113 yards and all four of Heaps' passing scores. It is a shame that Ashworth is a senior as he was starting to build a nice rapport with his freshman quarterback.
J.J. Di Luigi has been the focal point of the BYU offense as of late and he really got the chance to roam against San Diego State this weekend. Di Luigi finished with 22 carries for 134 yards and a touchdown as BYU beat the Aztecs. As Jake Heaps matures, Di Luigi's stock will just keep rising.
BYU running back J.J. Di Luigi was again the centerpiece of the Cougars' offense with 12 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown while also catching five passes for 63 yards. Despite mediocre quarterback play, Di Luigi is turning into a solid starter with his combination of plays on the ground and in the air.
BYU running back J.J. Di Luigi was the focal point of the BYU offense as they squared off against Nevada. Di Luigi carried the ball 15 times for 67 yards and a touchdown while also snagging eight balls for another 56 yards. Di Luigi is clearly the man they are running the offense through, especially as Jake Heaps grows up.
BYU RB J.J. Di Luigi had 13 carries for 69 yards in the win over Washington. He also added four catches for 83 yards including a 48-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the Cougars ahead for good. And with that performance he stakes his claim to be the lead back for the Cougars. Bryan Kariya only had 21 total yards (20 rushing and 1 receiving) and may soon be a forgotten man in Provo.
With the task of replacing the production of former BYU star Harvey Unga, Bryan Kariya and J.J. Di Luigi will share carries this season. "It’s going to be by committee this year" says running backs coach Lance Reynolds. WIth a new quarterback and the committee approach, it is best to stay away from any BYU backs.
J.J. Di Luigi is listed as BYU's starting tailback on the depth chart released on Monday. Bryan Kariya is also listed as a starter at running back. Translation: Di Luigi will be BYU's deep back with Kariya essentially being the fullback in two-back sets. Many have spent a lot of time and energy trying to figure out who will start at tight end and quarterback, but I bet it is DiLuigi that emerges as the fantasy option for the Cougars. Put him on your watch list.
BYU was missing three of its top receivers at Wednesday's practice with O'Neill Chambers out for disciplinary reasons, McKay Jacobson was battling an illness, and highly touted Ross Apo was experience tightness in his hamstrings. With little experience at quarterback, the aforementioned receivers will need to step up and make their quarterbacks look good this season.
BYU running back J.J. Di Luigi led all rushers in Wednesday's scrimmage with 43 yards rushing. Di Luigi also had a 10-yard touchdown reception in yesterday's scrimmage. With all the focus on quarterbacks and tight ends -- who continue to rotate -- DiLuigi is an overlooked sleeper prospect. We've pegged DiLuigi for the starting role for some time, and it looks like he's beginning to emerge over Bryan Kariya.
"The best news is the field looked really good,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall after Saturday's scrimmage. Apparently the Cougar offense didn't do much to excite the nearly 4000 fans in attendance or Mendenhall. Jake Heaps (10-of-20, 156 yards, 1 TD) did engineer a 96-yard scoring drive which was capped with a 45-yard touchdown pass to receiver McKay Jacobson. The more evenly matched Heaps, Riley Nelson (TD pass to Jacobson) and James Lark (TD pass to Dallin Cutler) are, the more you would think Mendenhall will go with the freshman Heaps.
Despite the loss of the Harvey Unga, the team's career rushing leader, the Cougars are still high on their backfield. "The running back crew that we have, I think we have guys who can perform at a high level consistently", says offensive lineman Matt Reynolds. The Cougars will be taking a committee approach with Bryan Kariya, J.J. Di Luigi, Mike Hague, and Josh Quezada all vying for playing time. The Cougars will have to take a committee approach to replace the production of Unga so this is one position to avoid on draft day.
Former BYU running back Harvey Unga was selected by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the NFL Supplemental Draft, which means the Bears will forfeit a 7th-round pick in next April's NFL Draft. We've heard nothing about a Chicago Bears honor code, thus Unga should be just fine. Hopefully the bruising back sticks and has a great impact on Sundays.
A BYU spokesperson has announced that running back Harvey Unga will not be allowed back in school until January of 2011 at the earliest. We can all officially scratch off the perennial 1000-yard rusher and double-digit touchdown maker off our draft lists. Unga will likely enter the 2010 NFL supplemental draft.
Salt Lake Tribune beat writer Jay Drew reports that there is no new news to report on the Harvey Unga situation. Unga has apparently changed his phone number and those close to him haven't heard from him either. We now have two sources reporting that it doesn't look good for the bruising running back to return to BYU in 2010. But keep in mind that there is nothing official yet.
Greg Wrubell, whose "Cougar Tracks" blog is featured on KSL.com, reports that he's hearing from someone in the know at BYU that the return of running back Harvey Unga from his suspension is "unlikely," though he's quick to point out that this doesn't mean all hope is lost. You'll remember that Unga committed an Honor Code violation that led to his dismissal, and the running back job is now a jumbled mess. While Wrubell reports there's "always a chance" it sounds comparable to the chances of one Lloyd Christmas.
Brigham Young coach Bronco Mendenhall told The Salt Lake Tribune that running back Harvey Unga wants to return to the program "in the most desperate way," but the decision rests in the hands of school leaders. The college experience at BYU is different than just about every other place, and clearly Unga partook in some of the activities that dominated my every Thursday-Sunday for 5 1/2 years. Hopefully The School/Church Administration will welcome him back to the good graces.
It's finals week at BYU and Harvey Unga is among the many completing his coursework for the winter semester. As Dick Harmon of the Deseret News points out, one of the reasons Unga returned to school was to get his degree. A degree I'm sure he'd like to finish at BYU. With finals going on, don't expect much on the Unga situation this week, but I for one am not closing the door on his return.
Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune takes an in-depth look at running back Harvey Unga's departure from the BYU program. Should Unga's days in Provo be over, Drew sees J.J. DiLuigi as the #1, with Bryan Kariya, Malosi Te'o and freshman Josh Quezada battling for carries as well. Drew also examines the possibility that Unga does return to the program in the article linked, though that scenario doesn't seem very likely.
Back in November we mentioned BYU running back J.J. Di Luigi as a player that could emerge in 2010, if Harvey Unga turned pro. Well he didn't, but Unga's recent departure could put Di Luigi in driver seat for the starting job. Keep in mind it is still a long time between now and the season opener in September. Unga could seek readmission. Let's see how this one plays out. In the meantime file Di Luigi's name away.
Brigham Young running back Harvey Unga has "voluntarily withdrawn from school for violating the school's honor code." There is no word on when and if the star senior tailback will return, however a former player expects Unga to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. As Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune notes, the BYU Honor Code forbids things like booze, tobacco and pre-marital sex. For what it's worth, Unga's one-time fiancee has also left school due to the honor code. Should Unga be gone for good, it opens up a free-for-all for carries, a bridge we'll cross when we get there.
"I took it personally that they said there were some things I need to do better, such as pass blocking," BYU running back Harvey Unga said about NFL scouts' evaluations of him. "I also need to become better at managing my weight, and becoming faster and more efficient." Unga is a load and has registered 11 touchdowns and 1000+ yards each of the last two years. Still, we still think he can do more, especially in the touchdown department. If everything goes well, he could easily be a 15+ touchdown guy in 2010.
Officials at BYU and Utah say they have not been contacted by Pac-10 officials regarding expansion. The Pac-10 and Big Ten's recent sense of urgency to expand will have a major ripple effect in the landscape of college football. Big changes are on the horizon. I don't know if it will be this year or in five years, but the six BCS conferences as we know them appear to be endangered species.
ESPN's Graham Watson poses the question about incoming recruit Jake Heaps: will take his Mormon mission and if so, will it impact his chances of winning the starting job this fall? “A long time ago at BYU, quarterbacks wouldn’t go on missions for that very reason,” coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “I’m not sure whether Jake is planning to go or not, we haven’t had that conversation.” Ms. Watson brings up an excellent point, but you can still expect Heaps to make our Top 10 impact quarterback recruits that should be complete soon.
Brigham Young running back Harvey Unga will return for his senior season rather than enter the 2010 NFL Draft. Unga, who has been a factor since he first set foot on campus, will look to join an elite group of backs that have gained over 1,000 in four different collegiate seasons.
"I am not sure yet. I’ll most likely meet with (coach Bronco Mendenhall) when he gets back and talk to him," BYU running back Harvey Unga told Salt Lake Tribune beat writer Jay Drew when asked if he was coming back for his senior year. Unga posted his third consecutive 1000-yard season in 2009. He's a load to bring down, whether he's running against college of NFL defenders.
Dick Harmon reports that BYU running back Harvey Unga is leaning towards going pro, though the junior remains enrolled in classes while he awaits his grade from the NFL Advisory Board. Unga is making all the right moves as he ponders his next move.
BYU junior running back Harvey Unga is still not sure whether he'll return to school or enter the NFL draft, telling The Salt Lake Tribune that he "honestly doesn't know" and that he's yet to fill out the paperwork to have his draft status evaluated. At this point fantasy owners will have to wait and see, as it sounds like Unga is going to take his time and make his decision when the smoke from the season clears.
Oregon State and BYU will play in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22 at 8 p.m. This will be BYU's fifth straight appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Cougars are 2-2 during that stretch. The Cougars defense will need to find a way to slow down running back Jacquizz Rodgers and James Rodgers to add another win to that record. On the flip side the Beavers defense has given up yards through the air. With Max Hall at quarterback, this is setting up to be a game fantasy owners will want to tune in for.
The Mountain West Conference has issued a public reprimand to BYU quarterback Max Hall for his anti-Utah comments last Saturday. Hall has already apologized for his rant. A public reprimand is about the equivalent to a "tisk tisk" so in others words, Hall won't actually be punished.
BYU quarterback Max Hall went off on everything Utah in his post game press conference following BYU's win over the Utes. "I don't like Utah. In fact, I hate them. I hate everything about them. I hate their program, I hate their fans, I hate everything," Hall said. "I think the whole university, their fans, and their organization is classless. They threw beer on my family and stuff last year, and they did a whole bunch of nasty things, and I don't respect them, and they deserve to lose." Hall was obviously coming off an emotionally charged situation, throwing the game winning touchdown in overtime, and had some lingering frustrations he wanted to get off his chest.
BYU running back Harvey Unga rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries in Saturday's 26-23 overtime victory over Utah. This marks Unga's fifth 100-yard game for the junior on the season but his first since Oct. 24. Unga was somewhat limited by an ankle injury in previous outings, but it seems that he is fully recovered at this point.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that BYU tight end Dennis Pitta, who played with an injured knee against Utah last year, is fired up about facing the in-state rival when he's 100%. Pitta's 54 catches for 735 yards and seven scores is second only to Dennis Morris in 2009 tight end production.
BYU running back Harvey Unga is still struggling with an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision this week against Air Force. Unga was limited to just 50 yards on 11 carries last week against New Mexico, and Air Force posseses a good defense. Look elsewhere for running back production this week.
BYU quarterback Max Hall threw for 314 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 21-of-33 passing in Saturday's 24-19 win over New Mexico. Hall threw to nine receivers in the game, with no one netting over 64 yards in the contest. This victory gives Hall his 29th win and ties him for the school record with Heisman trophy winner Ty Detmer.
BYU running back Harvey Unga tweaked his ankle last week against Wyoming, but the injury is not considered serious. Harvey sat out most of the second half with the game well in hand.
Unga should play this week against UNLV, but the injury could slow the big fella down a little bit.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that BYU running back Harvey Unga is the most likely candidate to leave school early, though the junior back says he is focused solely on the final four games of the season. It's November, so it must mean time to speculate on possible early entries to the NFL Draft. It sounds like Unga is certainly going to weigh all of his options, so his keeper league owners will just have to sit back and wait.
BYU is expecting to get wide receiver McKay Jacobson (hamstring) back for this week's game with Wyoming. Jacobson's missed four games, and his return will be welcomed by starting quarterback Max Hall.
Wide receiver McKay Jacobson (hamstring) is expected to return for BYU's next game on Nov.7 against Wyoming. Jacobson started the year off with three straight games with a touchdown, but has missed the last four due to the injury. He's worth a pickup for the stretch run.
BYU running back Harvey Unga rushed for 123 yards on 21 carries in Saturday's 38-7 loss at the hands of TCU. Unga and quarterback Max Hall accounted for all but 26 of BYU's total yards. Hall threw for 162 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the game.
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said he will decide on Thursday whether or not wide receiver McKay Jacobson (hamstring) will play against TCU this week. "McKay is still possible, is what I would say," Mendenhall said. "Possible to doubtful." Given the injury and the opponent, you should avoid Jacobson this week.
BYU quarterback Max Hall threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 47 yards and a score in Saturday's win over San Diego State. His running touchdown came as time expired in the first half and has been mentioned as the play of the game. Hall's run support came in the form of Harvey Unga, who ran for 81 yards and the game's first score. One of Hall's touchdown strikes went to Dennis Pitta, who ended the day with 72 yards on six receptions and is now BYU's career yardage leader for a tight end with 2,543 yards.
BYU running back Harvey Unga had a season-high 149 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 20 carries in Saturday night's win over UNLV. This marks Unga's third straight game with over 100 yards on the ground and brings his season touchdown total to eight.
BYU quarterback Max Hall threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns, completing 78 percent of his passes in the 59-21 win over UNLV. This marks Hall's first game this year wih no interceptions and leaves him flirting with surpassing 2,000 yards next week at San Diego State.
BYU wide receiver McKay Jacobson will miss four to six weeks after pulling his hamstring during pregame warm-ups before last Saturday's contest against Utah State. With Jacobson out, Luke Ashworth slides into the starting lineup. Ashworth and fellow starting wide receiver O'Neill Chambers will be looked to more heavily in the passing game.
BYU quarterback Max Hall threw for 216 yards and three scores in the win over Utah State. Hall continues to struggle with interceptions, as he added two more last night to give him 10 on the 2009 campaign; and there's a whole lot of football left.
BYU running back Harvey Unga carried the ball 22 times for 118 yards and a score in the win over Utah State. Now healthy, Unga is back to carrying the load for the Cougars, and he'll remain a very nice starting option for the remainder of 2009.
BYU wide receiver McKay Jacobson didn't play against Utah State after he injured a hamstring during warm ups. And in Jacobson's absence Luke Ashworth caught five balls for 91 yards and a score. We'll have to wait and see about Jacobson's status for the Cougars' game next week at UNLV.
BYU running back Harvey Unga rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns on 22 touches against Colorado State on Saturday. Unga seems to be back to receiving his full compliment of carries after recuperating from shoulder injury.
BYU running back Harvey Unga (hamstring) will play on Saturday versus Florida State.ÿ"I am not sure there will be any restrictions," coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "Whether he will be 100 percent of not, I am not certain." It is probably a good idea to still hold Unga out of your college fantasy football lineup this week.
BYU running back Harvey Unga (hamstring) returned Saturday against Tulane but was limited to only 17 yards on 3 carries. J.J. Di Luigi and Bryan Kariya led the way on the ground with a combined 24 carries for 134 yards and three scores. Until Unga starts seeing consistent carries, the BYU run game should avoided..
BYU quarterback Max Hall was dominant in Saturday's game against Tulane. Hall threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns on 24 of 32 passing in the 54-3 victory. This game marks Hall's 14th career 300-yard passing game for the Cougars. Hall distributed the ball to 12 different receivers, with no one grabbing over four passes.
Running back Harvey Unga is back atop the BYU depth chart but coach Bronco Mendenhall says he will be a game-time decision. It sounds like Unga will play, but the uncertainty puts fantasy owners in a bit of a pickle.ÿ Whether or not you risk starting Unga depends on who else you have on your roster.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Harvey Unga (hamstring) is back atop the BYU running back depth chart. Unga should get the start against Tulane, and he'll be a nice starting option for owners.
Max Hall was the center of an impressive win for Brigham Young over the Oklahoma Sooners Saturday evening, completing 26 of 28 passes for 329 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 14-13 win in Arlington, Texas. The statistics are decent - at least by Hall standards - but equally impressive was the leadership he displayed in leading a 16-play, 78-yard drive for a score to take the lead late in the fourth quarter over the Sooners. BYU has made a statement as an outside BCS championship contender early on, with Hall the key to a possible run at glory. Could 2009 finally be the Cougars' year?
BYU running back Harvey Unga (hamstring) did not participate in contact drills on Tuesday. While coach Bronco Mendenhall believes Unga will play Saturday against Oklahoma, leaving him out of your fantasy lineup would be wise.
BYU wide receiver McKay Jacobson was held out of Wednesday's scrimmage due to concussion-like symptoms. Jacobson is expected to be one of BYU's top receivers this fall, and it would be a huge blow to the Cougars' passing game if he misses significant time.
The bad luck continues for BYU running back Harvey Unga, who injured his hamstring on Monday, though coach Bronco Mendenhall is certain his star tailback will be ready for the Sooners on September 5. Unga, who dealt with an ugly case of swine flu this off-season, is due for some good things to happen. He remains a top fantasy back despite this string of misfortune.
Quarterback Max Hall was back for BYU completing 13-for-14 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's scrimmage. Hall's performance should erase any concerns over his dislocated ring finger on his throwing hand.
BYU welcomed back fullback Manase Tonga on Friday. Tonga missed the 2008 season due to academics. The burly runner could be a nuisance to Harvey Unga owners. Tonga had eight touchdowns in 2007 on just 88 carries. Can you say touchdown vulture?
Running back Manase Tonga was readmitted to BYU, and he has been immediately welcomed back to the program. Tonga had to leave BYU due to academic reasons, and he missed the 2008 campaign. It's uncertain whether he'll be ready to play in the opener as he strives to return to the role of starting fullback. Tonga, who scored eight times in 2007, will definitely vulture touchdowns that may normally belong to Harvey Unga. However Max Hall's owners should be thrilled, as Tonga's ability to pick up blitzes will help offset an offensive line with a whole bunch of question marks.
Despite losing over 20 lbs. due to the swine flu, The Salt Lake Tribune reports that BYU starting running back Harvey Unga is as healthy as he's ever been going into a season. However Unga is being held out of scrimmages and contact as a precautionary measure against injury. Harvey Unga and his coaches are convinced the back will be ready for the opener and the season, and with no prior history of predicting how fantasy backs will respond following a bout with the swine flu, we'll believe them.
BYU quarterback Max Hall dislocated the ring finger in his throwing hand in Monday morning's practice. Trainer Kevin Morris says Hall is not expected to miss any practice time.
BYU will learn this week whether or not running back Manase Tonga will be re-admitted to the university following his stint at Utah Valley University. Tonga needs a B- in his summer class and an approval from an admissions committee. Tonga was expected to play a big role and steal some of Harvey Unga's production. However even if he does return he's beyond the curve, and coach Bronco Mendenhall sees sophomore J.J. Di Luigi emerging in the backup role.
The young BYU offensive line took a big hit on Friday, when coach Bronco Mendenhall told The Salt Lake Tribune that projected starter at left guard, Jason Speredon, will miss the season with shoulder surgery. BYU will head into the season with an even younger and more inexperienced line than first expected. And this doesn't bode well for the fantasy prospects of Max Hall and Harvey Unga, among others.
BYU left tackle Matt Reynolds had surgery on his broken hand and will be back in action in two to three weeks. It is unclear if Reynolds will be available against Oklahoma on Sept. 5. This is semi-good news for the Cougars who can ill afford to lose offensive linemen. Reynolds is the group's only returning starter.
BYU running back Manase Tonga is still not back at practice for the Cougars as he finishes up classwork at Utah Valley University. According to coach Bronco Mendenhall, Tonga is expected to finish his finals on Wednesday and the earliest he'll have his grades in his hands is Friday.
BYU wide receiver McKay Jacobson, fresh off his mission trip, won the annual team fitness competition, and he's already made a believer of QB Max Hall, who stated, "The kid is fast. He's got some wheels, and I am not going to be afraid to throw up top to him a couple times." Austin Collie left a whole bunch of receptions, yards and touchdowns when he decided to play on Sunday. And Jacobson seems willing and able to scoop them up.
BYU running back Harvey Unga battled a bout of the swine flu earlier this summer, losing 20 pounds in the process, but says he is all good now. Unga has replaced all but five of the pounds he lost, claiming that he is now "five pounds faster". We aren't going to argue with the big fella.
The Mountain West Conference football media has named Max Hall its preseason player of the year.Aÿ Coming off a 35-touchdown junior campaign this makes sense.Aÿ We have Hall pegged as the nation's #15 fantasy quarterback, and it's with concerns over an increasedAÿ BYU emphasis on the run that he's lower than most seniors returning after such a great season.Aÿ
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said that Manase Tonga is not quite eligible to play this fall. AÿTonga needs a B-minus or better in two summer classes to make the grade.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said that Manase Tonga is not quite eligible to play this fall. Tonga needs a B-minus or better in two summer classes to make the grade. The Mountain West Conference football media has named Max Hall its preseason player of the year. Coming off a 35-touchdown junior campaign this makes sense. We have Hall pegged as the nation's #15 fantasy quarterback, and it's with concerns over an increased BYU emphasis on the run that he's lower than most seniors returning after such a great season.
The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that top quarterback recruit Jake Heaps has decided to attend BYU next season. Heaps, whom Scout.com ranked as the top QB prospect in the nation, will choose the Cougars over a host of big-name programs. And considering that Max Hall will be moving on there's every reason to believe that this gunslinger will take over the controls for the 2010 season. Those in keeper leagues may want to draft Heaps late and then sue your league commissioner should he block you from doing so...it worked for Maurice Clarett.
"It might surprise everyone because he (WR McKay Jacobson) had a hamstring injury going through spring, coming back from a mission," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "But in his conditioning, speed and agility, he exceeds that of where Austin Collie was when he came back (from his LDS mission). Clearly, if McKay's not the fastest player on the team, he's one of the top two." Luke Ashworth and O'Neill Chambers exit spring as the starters. But don't be surprised to see Jacobson pass Ashworth on the depth chart in fall camp.
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said running back Manase Tonga has completed all of his required course work at Utah Valley University and could rejoin the team for fall camp. The admissions office is expected to make a ruling on Tonga's re-admission next week. If he is cleared, he will likely serve as Harvey Unga's top backup this fall.
Who is going to replace Austin Collie? A question that has been on everyone's mind. Luke Ashworth and O'Neill Chambers seem to be penciled in as starters for now. However, McKay Jacobson has been slowed by a hamstring injury this spring. Jacobson was our first choice to take over for Collie. However, it is sounding more and more like the ball will be spread around this fall. Meaning we may not have a true number one wide receiver at BYU.
BYU running back Manase Tonga, who missed all of 2008 with academic issues, has been taking classes at Utah Valley University, and he told the Salt Lake Tribune that he's "on track" to return to BYU and join the team for fall camp. In the same article quarterback Max Hall expressed his excitement over Tonga's likely return, explaining that Tonga could make BYU a better offense than the 2008 version. While this is great for Tonga and BYU, it is not great news for owners of running back Harvey Unga, as the carries will likely be spread out a bit more.
BYU senior quarterback Max Hall has reported for spring camp at more than 200 pounds, and he hopes to put on a few more before the season begins. Clearly Hall isn't looking to build on his 115 rushing yards from 2008, so he wants to get a little bit stronger. He's coming off a 39 score 2008, though he'll miss Austin Collie, the team's top receiver who has moved on.
