So the battle to be the starting quarterback for Cal is down to Allan Bridgford, Zach Maynard, and Brock Mansion with Bridgford taking the bulk of the second team snaps.ÿ Saturday, as Maynard and Mansion duked it out, Mansion was the winner of the day as he was steady and made few mistakes while Maynard threw two picks. Mansion has the most starting experience and seems to be demonstrating game management ability while Maynard is much more athletic but hasn't played in a game since transferring from Buffalo.
Cal junior running back Shane Vereen will enter the 2011 NFL Draft. "After much thought and deliberation we decided that this was the best time for us to move forward and enter the 2011 NFL Draft," Vereen said in a released statement. Vereen lose will leave a big hole to fill he Bears' backfield. Isi Sofele was Vereen's top backup, but you'll likely see more running back by committee next season.
Cal running back Shane Vereen will consult with coach Jeff Tedford and the NFL player evaluation committee to determine whether or not he will enter the 2011 NFL Draft. "I'm kind of waiting for the season to be over to even think about that," Vereen said. "The most important thing to me right now is getting to a bowl game." One thing the Mercury News points out is that Vereen has already received his degree, potentially making it easier for him to leave school early.
Cal running back Shane Vereen had 15 carries for 63 yards in the loss to Stanford. He added three catches for 24 yards. Vereen is second in the Pac 10 in rushing yards (1,061) and touchdowns (16). Fantasy have to love the production but they probably expected better rushing totals. The good news is that the Bears are facing a must-win in the finale against Washington which could be fantasy nirvana for Vereen.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones had three catches for 49 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Stanford. Jones caught his touchdown on a pass from fellow wide receiver Keenan Allen. He is fourth in the Pac 10 in receiving yards (748) but only has four touchdowns. He has a good matchup against Washington in the finale.
Cal quarterback Brock Mansion completed 19-of-37 passes for a career-high 173 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss to Stanford. Mansion again showed he may not be the favorite to start next fall. He will have to beat out Allan Bridgford, Beau Sweeney and Zach Maynard. He safe to let go in dynasty leagues unless you are desperate for a quarterback.
Cal quarterback Brock Mansion completed just 10-of-28 passes for 69 yards in the narrow loss to Oregon. Mansion was all over the place and hasn't looked like the quarterback of the future. He has thrown for 381 yards and one touchdown in three games. Look for better options in Pac 10 dynasty leagues.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones was held to three catches for 24 yards in the loss to Oregon. He added one rush for 12 yards. Jones has been pretty good with Brock Mansion under center but tonight they couldn't get on the same page. Most of that probably had to do with Mansion's lack of accuracy. Don't give up on Jones just yet.
Cal running back Shane Vereen had 26 carries for 112 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Oregon. He added one catch for 10 yards. It was his fifth 100 yard game of the season. Vereen tried to will his team to a victory but the rest of the offense didn't cooperate. The Bears only had 193 yards of total offense and Vereen accounted for 122 of those. He now has 998 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on the season.
Cal wide receiver Jeremy Ross had a 27-yard touchdown run in the win at Washington State. He finished with three catches for 44 yards to go along with the score. Ross's catches and yardage today both matched season highs and he could be valuable in Pac 10 leagues down the stretch if Keenan Allen misses any action with his knee injury.
Cal quarterback Brock Mansion completed 12-of-24 passes for 170 yards with two interceptions in the win at Washington State. He added five rushes for 25 yards. The Bears predictably kept the ball on the ground (42 rushing attempts) with Mansion making his first career start. He was without wide receiver Keenan Allen today so he didn't have all of his weapons at his disposal. With games against Oregon and Stanford coming up, he may get a chance to post some fantasy numbers if the Bears fall behind early.
Cal running back Shane Vereen had 25 carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the win at Washington State. It was his fourth 100 yard game of the season. More was probably expected from Vereen but the production isn't that bad considering quarterback Brock Mansion was making his first start of the season. Expect the Bears to keep pounding away with the run down the stretch with an inexperienced quarterback under center. Vereen is now up to 886 rushing yards, 179 receiving yards, and 15 total touchdowns.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones had four catches for 101 yards in the win at Washington State. It was his third 100 yard receiving game of the season. Jones's stats didn't suffer with quarterback Brock Mansion making his first career start. If Keenan Allen's knee injury is serious then Jones should see a ton of targets in the last three games. He has 42 catches for 675 yards and three touchdowns this season.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley will miss the rest of the season after an MRI revealed serious damage to his left knee. Brock Mansion will take over as the Bears' starter. Thanks to Dave for the link.
Cal running back Shane Vereen tied his season-low with 53 rushing yards in the loss at Oregon State. He had only 12 carries and didn't record a catch for the first time in 34 games. Vereen had his worst game of the season which can probably be blamed on the score (28-0 at halftime) and the loss of starting quarterback Kevin Riley in the first quarter. He might have a tough time the rest of the season if Riley is out, but he has a great matchup next weekend against Washington State.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones caught five passes for 66 yards in the loss at Oregon State. Jones is on pace to set career-highs in catches and yards, but owners can't be thrilled with his paltry three touchdowns. His prospects of reaching the end zone more going forward could be limited if backup quarterback Brock Mansion is forced to play the rest of the season. Sell high if you can.
Cal backup quarterback Brock Mansion entered the game in the first quarter and completed 14-of-24 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown in the loss at Oregon State. Mansion, pending the MRI results on Kevin Riley's knee, will be the starter next weekend against Washington State. There was thought that Beau Sweeney might challenge him this week in practice but head coach Jeff Tedford quickly shot that down. This might be an early indication of what to expect next season in Berkeley with Riley moving on.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley hurt his knee midway through the first quarter of the Bears' loss to Oregon State. The Oregonian speculates that a Sunday MRI may spell the end of the senior's season. The loss of the veteran Riley would be a serious blow to the Cal offense, and it would usher in the Brock Mansion era in Berkeley.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley completed 19-of-28 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Arizona State. He sat out the fourth quarter in the blowout. Riley finally played well after struggling in his last five games. He has thrown 13 touchdowns to only six interceptions but hasn't been consistent enough to be counted on in fantasy leagues. He shouldn't be used outside of Pac 10 only leagues.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones had four catches for 110 yards including a 52-yard touchdown in the win over Arizona State. It was his second 100 yard receiving game of the season. Jones had been quiet in the last three games (eight catches for 70 yards) before returning back to form today. He has the ability to post lines like this but the inconsistency of quarterback Kevin Riley hurts him. He has a good matchup next weekend against a banged up Oregon State secondary.
Cal running back Shane Vereen had 19 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Arizona State. He added two catches for eight yards. Vereen just keeps finding the endzone. He now has 894 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns (10 rushing and three receiving) in seven games. He has also caught a pass in 33 straight games. He is a beast.
Cal running back Shane Vereen had his "bell rung" against USC last Saturday, but did not suffer a concussion. "I took a couple hits, nothing too serious," Vereen said. Vereen had a rough go against the Trojans, finishing with just 53 yards rushing and no scores. He'll look to rebound this week against Arizona State.
"Kevin (Riley) is our starting quarterback and gives us the best chance to win," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "We're not going to make a change there unless something unforeseen happens." Riley had seven touchdowns and zero interceptions in the first two games, but has more interceptions (six) than touchdowns (five) in the last five games.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones was held to three catches for 20 yards in the loss at USC. It was his third straight game under 50 yards receiving. After a great start to the season, Jones has been brutal in his last three games. He has a total of eight catches for 70 yards and no receiving touchdowns in that span. Until the Bears passing attack shows signs of life again, leave Jones for someone else outside of Pac-10 only leagues.
Cal running back Shane Vereen finished with 10 carries for 53 yards in the loss at USC. Both were season lows but he did add three catches for 45 yards and a touchdown to avoid a complete fantasy disaster. The Golden Bears were down 42-0 at halftime and had three first downs. Needless to say, that won't lead to good running stats in the second half for any back. Vereen's ability to contribute in the passing game when the ground attack stalls still makes him a RB1 in BCS only leagues.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley completed 15-of-29 for 191 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss at USC. Don't let the final numbers fool you. He was 3-of-12 for 51 yards and two interceptions at halftime when the Bears were down 42-0. He has now played four straight mediocre at best games and head coach Jeff Tedford could start looking towards the future if he doesn't pick up his play quickly.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones took a reverse 48 yards for a touchdown in the win over UCLA. He only managed one catch for nine yards through the air. Jones had been torching opposing secondaries all season before tonight. Quarterback Kevin Riley had issues with his accuracy so that should be to blame for the lack of production. His owners should be excited that he managed the touchdown on the ground. Don't drop him as USC's horrible pass defense is up next.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley completed 9-of-16 passes for 83 yards and one touchdown in the win over UCLA. He finished with -16 rushing yards but added a second touchdown on the ground. After the game head coach Jeff Tedford stated "He needs to complete balls. He didn't throw any interceptions so he was smart with the football, but we need to improve in the passing game." Doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement of the quarterback but keep in mind it was revealed that Riley missed the entire bye week of practice with a hamstring injury.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones was held to four catches for 41 yards in the loss at Arizona. It was the first time all season he didn't top 80 yards receiving in a game. The Bears gameplan focused on running the ball and it hurt Jones' production. Even with the below average game, he leads the Pac 10 with 25 receptions and 369 yards receiving. He should be owned in all BCS leagues.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley completed 13-of-26 passes for 116 yards with one interception in the loss to Arizona. The interception occurred on the final drive of the game. After a great start to the season, Riley has now posted two clunkers in a row. The Bears seemed focused on keeping the ball on the ground and wide receiver Keenan Allen played sparingly which contributed to his lackluster numbers. Don't give up on him yet, but start looking for other options if you can.
Cal running back Shane Vereen had a season-high 27 carries for 102 yards in the loss at Arizona. It was his second straight game over the century mark. Fantasy owners have to love the touches and yardage but it was the first time all season he was held out of the end zone. With tonight's effort he went over the 2,000-yard mark in career rushing yards. Even with the passing game stalling he is still a RB1 going forward.
Cal running back Shane Vereen ran for 198 yards and three touchdowns in the loss to Nevada. After two subpar rushing yardage games, owners have to be thrilled with the huge total tonight. He ripped off two long scoring runs (59 and 50 yards) and now has eight touchdowns in the first three games of the season.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley struggled in the loss to Nevada finishing with 277 yards passing with one touchdown and three interceptions. This was a disappointing effort considering how good the running game was going tonight. Riley picked up most of his yardage late in the game after the outcome had been decided. He locked onto Marvin Jones all night and will have to learn to go through his progressions to be a more reliable fantasy option.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones had 12 catches for 161 yards in the loss to Nevada. Both of those number represent new careers highs. Jones has gotten off to a great start this season as he now has 21 catches for 328 yards and two touchdowns through three games. He is quietly establishing himself as a WR2.
Cal running back Shane Vereen reached paydirt two more times today in the win over Colorado. He only managed 60 yards rushing on 16 carries but his owners have to be happy with his ability to score six. While owners have to love the five touchdowns he has posted in two weeks, they should be a little concerned with the rushing yards. He now has only 127 yards rushing on 30 carries in the young season. Hopefully he can top the century mark next week against Nevada.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones hauled in four passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in the win over Colorado. He showed his big play ability on a 62 yard catch and run in the fourth quarter. He added 23 yards on the ground as well. Jones now has nine catches for 167 and two touchdowns this season. He should be a top five WR in the Pac 10 this season now that Keenan Allen is stepping up opposite him in the passing game.
Cal QB Kevin Riley tied his career-high with four touchdown passes in the win over Colorado. He threw for 197 yards and added 24 yards rushing. Three of his scoring strikes were from inside the eight yard line. The Bears are traditionally a running team inside the red zone so upgrade Riley if this trend continues. He now has seven touchdowns and zero interceptions through two games.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley completed 14-of-20 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns. He didn't throw an interception but did fumble. Riley has garnered a ton of praise from Jeff Tedford during fall camp after having to compete for his job this spring. He should be a solid option but not necessarily one that will have huge weeks.
Cal running back Shane Vereen scored three touchdowns in the win over UC Davis. He had 14 carries for 67 yards and two catches for 28 yards. The yardage might not excite people but the touchdowns will make his owners happy. He had been dealing with a hamstring injury so some owners went in other direction today. Congrats to those who kept him stud tailback in their lineups.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones had five catches for 81 yards and a touchdown in the win over UC Davis. He did all of his damage in the first half. He should be the top receiving option for the Bears again this year. If Keenan Allen keeps playing like he did today, Jones shouldn't be seeing double teams for much longer.
Cal running back Shane Vereen (hamstring) says he is 100% healthy, though coach Jeff Tedford isn't so sure. The boss told The San Jose Mercury News that his senior isn't quite at "game speed" but should be the opener next Saturday. A tender hamstring and a weak opponent (Cal Davis) in Week One actually make Vereen somewhat of a risky start in the opener.
Cal RB Shane Vereen returned to the practice field yesterday. He didn't put on the pads or get hit but it was nice to see him out there with the first team offense. He has been held out of practices up until this point with a hamstring strain but should be 100% heading into the opener. It looks like he could take his first live hits during Saturday's practice. Feel free to draft him as high as the first round as he projects to be a big time fantasy player this year.
Cal WR Michael Calvin finally shed his red practice jersey and returned to the practice field. He has missed most of the fall practices with a strained groin. Calvin has had trouble staying on the field during his career but is challenging for the starting WR spot opposite Marvin Jones. He can't afford to miss any more time or he might slide too far down the depth chart to be a fantasy factor this year.
Cal wide receiver Michael Calvin is dealing with a groin injury, and like everyone with a groin injury, he's taking it one day at a time. Calvin has had trouble staying on the field in the past, and it's looking like 2010 may be no different.
Cal running back Shane Vereen (hamstring) says he's a couple of days from seeing the practice field. And he's a little bummed about the missed time, telling the San Jose Mercury News that he's "hoping it's not a sign of things to come." Cal fans and Vereen's fantasy owners share his hope that injuries will not hamper his 2010 campaign.
One of the priorities for Cal coach Jeff Tedford this August is to find a #2 running back behind Shane Vereen, and unfortunately no one has yet to stand out. Jonathan Okanes of Bear Talk breaks down the candidates that include Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson, Isi Sofele, Dasarte Yarnway and incoming freshman Trajuan Briggs. Unlike years past, owning the Cal #2 back in hopes for fantasy returns down the road doesn't seem like a sure thing. Until someone emerges this fall stay away, unless you're willing to take a big risk.
A hamstring injury has kept Cal running back Shane Vereen from practicing in camp.
Apparently tired of talking about quarterbacks, Cal coach Jeff Tedford said that "Kevin (Riley) is our starter, and he will be our starter." Beau Sweeney is expected to win the backup job. Riley's season-long fantasy potential is limited to Pac-10 leagues, though he could emerge as a spot starter in national leagues.
BearTalk will hosting a live chat with Cal running back Shane Vereen on Monday at 1pm (we assume Pacific Time). Just thought we'd pass along the info for those that would be interested in firing a question at the next great Bear back.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley finished spring practice as the leader to start this fall. While the situation is "still competitive" Riley will continue to take reps with the first unit. The quarterback battle was one to watch heading into spring practice but none of the challengers did anything to overtake Riley. He will most likely be officially named the starter during fall practice and should be avoided unless you are in a Pac-10 league.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley had another good performance during a spring scrimmage by completing 11 of 16 passes for 125 yards. He connected on his first seven passes. With Brock Mansion sitting out with a sprained foot, Riley continued to separate himself from the pack. Beau Sweeney completed 5 of 14 passes for 95 yards but is clearly behind Riley at this point.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley, had a good scrimmage in which he went 12-of-17 for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Riley has been fighting to keep his starting job and this scrimmage really helped show that he can handle the reigns. However, look out for Brock Mansion to still give a push for the starting nod.
“Ryan (Katz) will take the first turns but we’re going to try to go in without any pre-conceived notions,’’ said Oregon State coach Kevin Riley when speaking of the quarterback battle. "We’ll probably come out (of spring) with some determination but not a final determination just because we don’t have to." Virginia transfer Peter Lalich is also a contender for the open quarterback spot, but right now it is Katz's to lose.
Cal opens spring practice with only four wide receivers on scholarship. "I feel like I have to seize the opportunity," Cal receiver Michael Calvin said. "This spring ball is going to make or break me. I just have to come out here and compete." We've been waiting for Calvin to emerge for that last two seasons, but a knee injury has slowed him down. With the injury behind him and the lack of depth, this could the year he becomes a factor.
Wide receiver Alex Lagemann lined up with the first team offense when Cal took the field for the first time in spring practice. The 6-foot-2 junior caught 11 passes for 139 yards last year in nine games. He is going to be challenged to keep this spot with Jeremy Ross and Michael Calvin right behind him on the depth chart.
Cal coach Jeff Tedford said Kevin Riley, Beau Sweeney and Brock Mansion will all battle for the starting quarterback job, but based on his experience it is Riley that "has a substantial leg up" in the competition. The Pac-10 is full of promising young quarterbacks, though Berkeley is one place where we expect experience to win out. Riley should provide a solid starting option in Pac-10 leagues.
Cal running back Shane Vereen will not see much action this spring as he tries to heal up from the beating he took last season. He dealt with injuries to his knee, shoulder, and ribs late in the year. Vereen should be on everyone's fantasy radar after gaining 1196 yards from scrimmage and scoring 14 touchdowns last season despite only starting four games. He should be fine come fall, and feel free to use a high pick on him.
Cal wide receiver Michael Calvin had his surgically repaired right knee scoped for a second time a few weeks ago, but he should be ready for spring. A lot was expected from Calvin coming out of high school but injuries have derailed his career so far. He tore his ACL in 2008 and had the same knee scoped last fall. Hopefully he is finally healthy and able to compete for playing time.
Cal coach Jeff Tedford says "the quarterback position will be open and competitive through the spring, summer and fall." Not exactly a ringing endorsement for returning starter Kevin Riley. Looks like he is going to have to fend off Beau Sweeney this spring. Buffalo transfer Zach Maynard will have to sit out a year before joining the fray.
ESPN's Ted Miller states incoming running back Trajuan Briggs could serve as Shane Vereen's backup next fall. Vereen should be the next in a long line of great fantasy backs from Cal. And if tradition holds true, Briggs could follow.
Cal running back Jahvid Best will announce his intentions to enter the NFL draft, sources say. This was probably expected to start the year, and even more so after Best's scary fall during the season. The Bears' running game is in good hands with Shane Vereen, and we wish Jahvid the best.
Cal running back Shane Vereen ran for 122 yards and two scores in a loss to Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl. Vereen proved his worth after Jahvid Best was injured, and if we assume Best departs for Sunday glory, Vereen looks plenty capable of carrying the Cal running back torch.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley threw for 214 yards and a touchdown while being intercepted twice in a Poinsettia Bowl loss to Utah. Riley, a junior, had a steady but unspectacular season for the Bears and just may see some competition from the 6-foot-5 Brock Mansion come April.
Cal running back Jahvid Best (back) has been officially ruled out of the Poitsettia Bowl, thus we may have seen the of this dynamic runner in college. Best has requested an evaluation by the NFL Draft Advisory Committee, and there appears a decent chance that he'll move on to the pros.
Utah and Cal will play in the S.D. County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23 at 8 p.m. The big question deal with whether or not Cal running back Jahvid Best play? Best has missed the last three games recovering from a back injury suffered against Oregon State on Nov. 7. Cal Running back Shane Vereen and Utah running back Eddie Wide will should also draw attention from fantasy owners in this one.
Cal running back Jahvid Best (back) has yet to return to practice and has been ruled for Saturday's game against Washington. "Jahvid hasn't had any (concussion) symptoms for a couple of weeks, but we're making sure he's 100 percent completely clear," Tedford said. "His back is still a problem." It remains to be seen if Best will be able to return for a bowl game.
Cal running back Jahvid Best (concussion/back) did not practice on Sunday and coach Jeff Tedford says they haven't even discussed the possibility of Best playing Saturday against Washington. It seems unlikely the Best will play this weekend. We'll have to wait and see if Best can return for the Bears' bowl game.
Cal running back Shane Vereen carried a whopping 42 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Stanford. The coaching staff clearly has a lot of faith in Vereen, as he now has 72 carries in the last two games. He is making the most of them, and while no one can replace the dynamic Jahvid Best, Vereen is a darn good running back in his own right.
"I'm just trying to take it day by day and hoping for the best," Cal running back Jahvid Best (back/concussion) said. "Every day I'm feeling a little better. I'm hoping it keeps progressing that way and hopefully I'll be out here pretty soon." Best will not play this weekend against Stanford, and it seems unlikely that he would play on Dec. 5 against Washington, but anything is possible.
Cal coach Jeff Tedford told The San Jose Mercury News that there is "no chance"ÿthat running back Jahvid Best (concussion) will play against Stanford. This news was expected, though there still appears a chance that Cal's dynamic tailback will play in the bowl game.
Cal running back Shane Vereen carried 30 times for 161 yards and a touchdown. We all still wish Jahvid Best a speedy recovery, but this is the harsh world of football. Vereen and the Bear running game didn't miss a beat, and with Best being doubtful to play again this season, Vereen looks like a great late season addition, and an even better keeper option.
Cal running back Jahvid Best was back on campus receiving treatment on his sore back on Wednesday from the Bears' training staff. Best has not yet returned to class following his leaping end zone dive last Saturday and coach Jeff Tedford said he was "moving a little slow." It is unlikely we'll see Best on the field again this season, but it is good to hear that he is up and about.
ESPN.com's Ted Miller reports that Cal running back Jahvid Best (concussion) is recovering at home and not going to class, thus his availability for the rest of the season is in question. Clearly the most important thing is for Best to get healthy, and based on coach Jeff Tedford's comments it doesn't sound like he may return at all in 2009. Shane Vereen will see more carries in Best's absence, though no team can come close to replacing what #4 brings.
Cal running back Jahvid Best was released from the hospital Sunday after suffering a concussion on a touchdown run in Saturday's game. Best will miss at least one game. Best was held overnight for observation and testing. We're wishing him a speedy recovery after a truly scary moment this weekend.
California running back Jahvid Best was injured on his touchdown run with 6:07 to go in the second quarter against Oregon State and was taken to the hospital. If you have a weak stomach, I suggest not watching the highlights. Best leaped over a defender to score the touchdown, and landed squarely on the upper part of his back/neck area. Oregon State players immediately formed a prayer in the end zone and Best was taken off on a stretcher with oxygen to assist his breathing. Nobody likes to see injuries like this, we hope he is okay.
UPDATE: Best has a concussion and has movement in his arms and legs per FSN announcers working the game.
Cal running back Jahvid Best practiced Thursday, and is expected to start Saturday against Oregon State. Not much information out there regarding Best's headaches. Either they aren't serious at all, or its a bluff and Shane Vereen sees lots of carries this weekend. So, are you feeling lucky? I am...Best shouldn't be limited.
Cal running back Jahvid Best has missed the last two practices due to a mild concussion suffered in last week's game against Arizona State, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Best doesn't believe he'll miss this weekend's matchup with Oregon State, but any time I hear "concussion" and "missed practice," alarms go off. Don't panic yet, but make sure he is back on the practice field before Saturday.
Jahvid Best was held in check Saturday at Arizona State, rushing 18 times for just 63 yards. Best did catch seven passes for 61 yards and a touchdown, so it wasn't a total loss for fantasy owners. Look for a bounce back effort against Oregon State next week.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley completed 27 of 44 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns at Arizona State. This was Riley's first 300-yard effort, and after having only five touchdowns through Cal's first five games, Riley now has eight in his last three contests. Riley has only been intercepted twice all year, and looks like a sneakily steady play out west.
Cal quarterback Kevin Riley went 12 of 18 for 229 yards and three touchdowns in the Bears win over Washington State. Yes, it was against Washington State, but Riley now has back-to-back three touchdown games. While the Bear running game gets most of the attention, Riley can make a sneaky play in the right matchup.
Cal running back Shane Vereen ran 17 times for 154 yards and a touchdown Saturday against UCLA. Jahvid Best was his usual self, carrying 18 times for 102 yards and a score, while also catching two passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Best and Vereen take their potent rushing attack back home next weekend to take on Washington State.
Cal Bears wide receiver Marvin Jones had his best game of the season Saturday at UCLA, grabbing four passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately for Jones, Cal's offense is still the Jahvid Best show, so keep your expectations reasonable next week against Arizona.
Cal wide receivers Nyan Boateng (foot) and Verran Tucker (calf) are expected to play against UCLA this week. Both are only options in Pac-10 leagues.
California tailback and Heisman Trophy candidate Jahvid Best, was held to just 55 yards on 16 carries Saturday in a 42-3 road loss to the Oregon Ducks. That Best was held to as few yards as he was is a testament to the passion with which the Oregon Ducks played defensive football Saturday. Look for similar potential struggles next week as Best and his teammates host #12 USC.
Cal wide receiver Nyan Boateng will undergo surgery after suffering a fractured foot in last Saturday's win over Minnesota. Boateng is expected to miss four to six weeks. Jeremy Ross is expected to replace Boateng in the lineup. However, Cal is the still the Jahvid Best Show, making Cal receivers a limited factor in the fantasy equation.
Consider the Heisman Trophy campaign for the California Bears' Jahvid Best officially in full motion. In an incredible display Saturday on the road against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Best rushed for 131 yards and a school-record five touchdowns as the Bears routed its Big Ten opponent, 35-21. Best accounted for every touchdown that Cal put on the board today - and did so despite playing sparingly in the third quarter of today's contest.
California Bears' starting quarterback, Kevin Riley, netted a career-high four touchdown passes while going 17 of 25 for 298 yards passing in Saturday evening's impressive 52-13 win over the visiting Maryland Terrapins. Cal has an uncanny ability to come out strong in the first game of the year and stir up quite a bit of attention from a fantasy perspective at multiple positions. However, Jahvid Best seems to remain time-and-time again the only consistent go-to guy from Jeff Tedford's squad, with Shane Vereen perhaps a solid secondary option. Riley looked great against Maryland, but the question remains: Was that due to a rebirth of ability as alluded to during an heroic freshman season or will he falter has he has for the last two seasons after a strong start?
Jahvid Best, says the Associated Press, was "back in his usual role" against Maryland on Saturday evening, carrying the ball only 10 times, but racking up 137 yards and two touchdowns in Cal's 52-13 win over the Maryland Terrapins. Best continues to amaze statistically despite being limited in his role on the field, and proved once more a home-run hitting type of back, breaking a 73 yard scoring run for one of two first quarter touchdowns. Best told reporters after the game, "We wanted them to know what Cal football was all about." Thanks to Best, the Terrapins now certainly do.
Sophomore wide receiver Marvin Jones and senior wide receiver Verran Tucker will start for the Bears in week 1.
Jones' status was never in doubt, but Tucker's rise to the starting lineup is somewhat of a surprise.
Cal wide receiver Michael Calvin underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee last week. His availability for the start of the season is unknown. Calvin has a lot of potential, but he's been sidetracked by injuries in his time at Cal so far.
No surprise as Cal coach Jeff Tedford named Kevin Riley his starting quarterback. With a talented backfield in Berkeley we expect Riley to have fantasy value only in Pac-10 leagues.
Cal running back Jahvid Best (toe) participated in contact drills for the first time in nearly two weeks. Coach Jeff Tedford expects Best to play in Monday's scrimmage. Best's toe injury does not appear to be serious and shouldn't affect his status in week one versus Maryland.
The Mercury News reports that Cal coach Jeff Tedford has deemed the Cal quarterback battle a two-horse race between Kevin Riley and Brock Mansion, with Beau Sweeney falling back due to a lack of experience. Riley still appears the favorite to lead the Bears, but we're not expecting big numbers from the Cal quarterback spot in 2009.
Cal tight end Tad Smith has suffered an ACL injury and he'll be lost for the entire 2009 campaign. As Smith has used his redshirt, this could be a very unfortunate ending to his college career; however the NCAA has granted waivers for situations such as this one. Anthony Miller now appears the favorite to start at tight end.
Cal's Jahvid Best continues to do a lot of standing around and watching during practice as the Bears play it safe with their star running back. Best told Bear Talk that the injury is "doing all right. It's going as we planned." All signs point to Jahvid Best being ready to raise a ruckus come early September, and he remains one of the nation's top fantasy backs.
Mercury News' Jon Wilner lists Cal wide receivers Marvin Jones and Michael Calvin alongside running back Jahvid Best as players that "big things" are expected out of for 2009. By all accounts Jones had a great spring. Calvin, on the other hand, missed spring recovering from his knee injury. Both could turn into fantasy options if healthy.
ESPN blogger Ted Miller calls Cal running back Jahvid Best the "West Coast's top Heisman Trophy candidate." There is no arguing with Miller on this one. As long as Best stays healthy, he'll be in the conversation.
Cal running back Jahvid Best hopes to get up to 205 lbs. by the time the season rolls around. Best played at 190 last year. This is welcome news. Best's talents have been a given since the day the track star set foot in Berkeley, adding more weight should ease the durability concerns.
Alex Lagemann ended the California Bears' spring game Saturday as the team's top pass catcher, finishing with five receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown. Lagemann redshirted during the 2008 season, but he appears to possess a great deal of promise. The 6-1, 205 pound wideout, after all, was rated the No. 68 receiver in the nation coming out of Sarasota High School in California in 2007, where he posted 36 catches for 727 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior.
Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones rolled an ankle at practice, but it isn't considered serious. Jones and Michael Calvin are our top picks to emerge this fall at wide receiver.
