HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii's athletic department is scrapping a plan to drop the word "Rainbow" from its men's teams' nicknames. The university announced Tuesday it is changing its football, baseball and other men's team nicknames to the Rainbow Warriors - a name previously used by the football team but dropped in 2000. The changes take effect July 1. All Hawaii's women's teams will continue to be known as the Rainbow Wahine. "Wahine" means "woman" in Hawaiian. |

All year the prolific Hawaii passing attack had gone through slot receivers Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares as both finished the regular season with over 1,000 yards receiving. However, in the Hawaii Bowl, Pilares went down with an injury and that is when outside receiver Royce Pollard stepped up. Pollard had eight catches for 129 yards and a score while Salas put up a career night with 13 grabs for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Salas, Pilares, and Rodney Bradley are gone which means that the receiving load will have to be carried by Pollard and Darius Bright next season.
Hawaii wide receivers Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares, and Royce Pollard all had big games as the Warriors rolled on UNLV. Pilares led the charge with 157 yards and a touchdown, Salas added 94 yards and two scores, and Pollard had 95 yards and a score of his own. Salas and Pilares are gone after this year which opens the door for Pollard and Darius Bright to breakout.
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas caught almost 200 yards against New Mexico State as he finished the game with 10 catches for 191 yard and a score. Salas has been automatic all season and will be definitely missed after this year.
San Jose State couldn't keep Kealoha Pilares or Greg Salas from going over 100 yards receiving and barely kept Royce Pollard from doing so. Pilares lead the team with nine catches for 154 yards and a score, Salas had eight catches for 144 yards and a score, and Pollard had four grabs for 97 yards and a score. Pilares is back to health and is again a top tier option while Salas is always a must start.
In a display of constantly getting open and sheer consistency, Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas had 11 catches for 168 yards against Idaho as the Warriors rolled. While Salas did not reach the endzone, he is a must-start every week.
Greg Salas had yet another big day as he hauled in a team highs in catches with nine and yards with 160 while also reaching the endzone once. Salas is as automatic as they come in college football and is a must-start in any league.
Hawaii receiver Greg Salas did not pull in any scores against Nevada but he was again the favorite target of his quarterback, Bryant Moniz. Salas finished the game with 11 grabs for 153 yards. Fellow receiver Kealoha Pilares only saw eight catches for 67 yards, but two of his catches went for scores. This is the first week in a while that Salas was held out of the endzone, but trust that he will continue to make frequent trips to paydirt.
Hawaii receiver Greg Salas enjoyed a lot of attention from quarterback Bryant Moniz as he reeled in nine catches for 148 yards and all three passing touchdowns. Salas is back to form and is reaching the end zone with some regularity, which makes him a top tier receiving option in any league.
Hawaii wide receivers Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares were unstoppable against Louisiana Tech. Pilares caught 18 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns while Salas was not far behind with 10 catches for 197 yards and two scores of his own. Salas and Pilares are top tier receivers in any leagues and if they are available, get them now!
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas finally reached the end zone against Charleston Southern as he caught seven passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. For those who gave up on Salas, shame on you. Look for Salas to keep up his ways and start making more regular visits to paydirt.
Hawaii receivers Kealoha Pilares and Greg Salas each posted more than 100 receiving yards in a loss to Colorado. Pilares had 111 yards and a score on five catches, and Salas caught a team-high 10 balls for 100 yards. With Hawaii abandoning the running game, there were plenty of targets to go around in the passing game. Both guys are solid starts against Charleston Southern next week.
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas hauled in a game high eight passes for 124 yards but was held out of the end zone. Salas did have a controversial play that was reviewed up in the booth, but the officials ruled him down before crossing the goal line.
Hawaii offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich believes that his top receiver, Greg Salas, could have an even bigger year than his 106-catch season last year. When asked if he thinks Salas will repeat that performance, Rolovich said "I think he can. I don't know if he will, but I think he'll be a better receiver this year." Unlike last year, there will be continuity at quarterback and with Rodney Bradley back to help take pressure off him, Salas could very well have another great season for the Warriors.
Hawaii assistant head coach Ron Lee has resigned and that has peaked the interested of the originator of the run-and-shoot and former Hawaii coach, Mouse Davis. Davis has expressed an interest in the job as sono as it is available. Having the father of the run-and-shoot as your assistant head coach is going to help an already high-powered offense.
According to Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin, slotback Greg Salas is going to be used as a deep safety in 'Hail Mary' and red zone situations. While there is no need to be concerned that Salas is being permanently switched to the other side of the ball, it does bring some worry to mind as he is the Warriors' top offensive weapon and should not be tackling anyone.
Hawaii wide receiver Malcolm Lane remains suspended and will miss spring practice. Coach Greg McMackin will decide this summer if Lane will be allowed to rejoin the team. Lane missed all of the 2009 season due to academics, and we can only assume he is missing spring for similar reasons.
Hawaii wide receiver Malcolm Lane has been suspended for violating unspecified team rules. Lane missed all of the 2009 season for academic reasons. It sounds like Lane will miss spring practice, which will hinder his chances of regaining his starting job. Lane would have been a welcome addition to the receiving corps that already features Greg Salas and Rodney Bradley.
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas had ten catches for 147 yards, but failed to score against Navy Salas finishes the season with 103 grabs for 1559 yards. Should the junior return for one more season, he figures to have another huge year on the island.
Hawaii wide receiver Jon Medeiros hauled in ten passes for 149 yards in a win over San Jose State. Medeiros overshadowed the normally outstanding Greg Salas, who had eight catches for just 52 yards. The Warriors return to the island next week to take on Navy.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin told The Honolulu Advertiser that quarterback Bryant Moniz (ribs) and wide receiver Greg Salas (foot) are "game-time" decisions for Saturday's game at San Jose State. Both players appear too risky to start at this late juncture in the season.
X-rays revealed no significant damage to Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas' right foot.ÿ Salas' injury is being classified as a sprain and he is expected to play Saturday against San Jose St. It is not ideal to have one of your best fantasy receivers on crutches the week before a game, but the way he's been playing it will be nearly impossible to leave him out of your lineup.
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas is expected to have X-rays on his sore right foot on Monday "just to make sure" there is no damage.
Salas played through pain in his foot last Saturday, catching a Hawaii record 16 passes, but he left the stadium on crutches.
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas had a school record 16 catches for 196 yards and a touchdown in a win over New Mexico State. One of the best, most consistent receivers of the year. Hawaii has three games remaining, so hopefully you get to play him in all those outings.
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas caught 10 balls for 187 yards and two touchdowns against Utah State last night. Salas hasn't been bothered by the injuries to Warrior quarterbacks, and remains a remarkably consistent option each week. He is now up to 1,164 yards and seven scores on the year, and his lowest output for the season has been a 6-79 effort against Fresno State. Enjoy the predictable numbers next week versus New Mexico State.
Hawaii running back Leon Wright-Jackson had a huge night, rushing 15 times for 167 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Utah State. Wright-Jackson came in to the evening with just 33 carries for 190 yards for the entire year. If, by some reason you had him in your lineup, congrats! Don't expect another game like this from him this season.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said that wide receiver Royce Pollard (stress fracture) is not expected to play against Boise State. Steven Tsai reports that Joe Avery is expected to start at one of the wideout spots. No Hawaii players appear to be good fantasy options this week.
Hawaii wide receiver Royce Pollard has a stress fracture in left fibula and will not make the trip to Idaho. Pollard has caught 13 balls for 142 yards on the season. There's no timetable on his return.
Hawaii Warriors junior wide receiver Greg Salas grabbed six catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night in a 34-33 home loss to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. With quarterback Greg Alexander maturing at an unprecedented pace under center, both Salas and junior teammate Rodney Bradley are putting up some impressive statistics at the wide receiver position for Hawaii.
Hawaii wide receiver Greg Salas kicked off his season in style, catching seven balls for 180 yards and a score on Friday night. Early indications are that it will be Salas to emerge as the prime receiving threat for the Warriors, thus he'll be a definite fantasy factor throughout 2009.
Hawaii wide receiver Malcolm Lane will redshirt during the 2009 season in order to focus on academics. Lane will take his redshirt, get school in order and then return and, most importantly, graduate in 2010.
Hawaii wide receiver Malcolm Lane missed his second consecutive practice while dealing with personal issues. This isn't big news this early in camp. Hopefully Lane, a candidate for a huge breakout year, is back on the practice field soon.
Stephen Tsai of HawaiiWarriorBeat.com deems wide receiver Royce Pollard one to watch, calling him "perhaps Hawaii's most athletic receiver." Pollard is among a large group of Hawaii wide receivers whom we expect to make big strides from a season ago. Malcolm Lane and Rodney Bradley are our lead candidates serve as lead horse, however fall camp will play a huge role in determining who becomes Greg Alexander's favorite target.
Hawaii grad assistant Craig Stutzmann is expected to join the great Jerry Glanville and accept a coaching job with Portland State. We normally don't track the movements of grad assistants but Stutzmann's departure is significant because he is the coach in charge of the Hawaii wide receivers, a group that needs to make big strides from a season ago. And while we're on the subject, Jerry Glanville sure has had an interesting career.
Hawaii released an updated depth chart on Tuesday, and it appears as if Greg Salas will officially move to one of the inside slotback positions. The move confirms what we have penciled in as our WR depth chart: LWR Rodney Bradley, LSB Greg Salas, RSB Kealoha Pilares and RWR Malcolm Lane. We'll have a more in-depth breakdown of Hawaii receiver prospects in a couple of days.
In a recent interview with Warrior Beat's Stephen Tsai, Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said that Inoke Funaki will be used as "bulldog", a hybrid running back/slotback. McMackin clearly likes Funaki and wants to find a place for him. Unfortunately for Inoke, it doesn't look like it will be at quarterback anytime soon.
