BOSTON (AP) The NFL will celebrate its 50th Super Bowl in northern California, where its newest, most high-tech venue is being built. That makes South Florida, in the midst of a spat over expensive stadium renovations, a loser for the 2016 game. And Miami took a double defeat when Houston was awarded the 2017 championship game. In two separate votes, NFL owners Tuesday went with the both San Francisco Bay Area and Houston on the first ballot at their spring meetings. |

49ers OLB Aldon Smith (shoulder surgery) is doing a "little bit" in OTAs. Smith resumed lifting weights last month, and is expected to be 100 percent for training camp. Smith is looking to bounce-back from a frigid finish to his 2012 season, where including the playoffs, he notched zero sacks over his final six games. |

49ers CB Carlos Rogers is "told (he's a) starter," but expects Nnamdi Asomugha to have a "big role." Asomugha was expected to push Rogers opposite Tarell Brown, but Rogers remains penciled in for now. CSN Bay Area called Rogers a "lock" for a roster spot earlier this month, while estimating Asomugha was "50-50." Asomugha has to prove he's not done before competing for a starting job. |

49ers WR A.J. Jenkins admits his rookie season was "very humbling," and is trying to bulk up from 192 pounds to 200. "From being the top dog on campus to not playing at all, it teaches you a lot about the game and you try learning from the sidelines and other players," Jenkins said. "I need to make sure it doesn't happen again this year." In the mix for No. 3 receiver duties behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, Jenkins is currently tipping the scales at 196. For the time being, he remains off the fantasy radar. |

According to ESPN's John Clayton, the "early word" on 49ers undrafted rookie DL Lawrence Okoye is he's shown enough talent at offseason workouts to make a serious run at a 53-man roster spot. Per Clayton, there is "such a good buzz" on the freakishly athletic Okoye that he'd get claimed off waivers if San Francisco tried to push him onto the practice squad. Of course, Okoye has never played organized football and his star could fade fast when contact practices begin. Okoye is a former rugby player. |

GM Trent Baalke said the 49ers are "big believers" in a three-headed approach at running back. Last year, Frank Gore averaged a reasonable 17.8 touches per game. Kendall Hunter got 7.3 before partially tearing his Achilles' tendon and LaMichael James stepped up with 6.1 over the final seven games (including playoffs). Gore is no longer a candidate for 300 touches at age 30, but he's still the Niners' feature back. Another 250 touches is a safe projection. |

49ers OLB Aldon Smith (shoulder surgery) is doing a "little bit" in OTAs. Smith resumed lifting weights last month, and is expected to be 100 percent for training camp. Smith is looking to bounce-back from a frigid finish to his 2012 season, where including the playoffs, he notched zero sacks over his final six games.
49ers CB Carlos Rogers is "told (he's a) starter," but expects Nnamdi Asomugha to have a "big role." Asomugha was expected to push Rogers opposite Tarell Brown, but Rogers remains penciled in for now. CSN Bay Area called Rogers a "lock" for a roster spot earlier this month, while estimating Asomugha was "50-50." Asomugha has to prove he's not done before competing for a starting job.
49ers WR A.J. Jenkins admits his rookie season was "very humbling," and is trying to bulk up from 192 pounds to 200. "From being the top dog on campus to not playing at all, it teaches you a lot about the game and you try learning from the sidelines and other players," Jenkins said. "I need to make sure it doesn't happen again this year." In the mix for No. 3 receiver duties behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, Jenkins is currently tipping the scales at 196. For the time being, he remains off the fantasy radar.
The Sacramento Bee considers the 49ers' No. 3 receiver job "wide open." Keep in mind San Francisco's third receiver rotation wasn't productive in 2012 as Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams rotated behind Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss. Still, there is some opportunity for A.J. Jenkins behind Crabtree and Anquan Boldin. The 2012 first-rounder has reportedly added muscle this offseason. Jenkins will be competing with Quinton Patton, Williams, and Ricardo Lockette.
According to ESPN's John Clayton, the "early word" on 49ers undrafted rookie DL Lawrence Okoye is he's shown enough talent at offseason workouts to make a serious run at a 53-man roster spot. Per Clayton, there is "such a good buzz" on the freakishly athletic Okoye that he'd get claimed off waivers if San Francisco tried to push him onto the practice squad. Of course, Okoye has never played organized football and his star could fade fast when contact practices begin. Okoye is a former rugby player.
GM Trent Baalke said the 49ers are "big believers" in a three-headed approach at running back. Last year, Frank Gore averaged a reasonable 17.8 touches per game. Kendall Hunter got 7.3 before partially tearing his Achilles' tendon and LaMichael James stepped up with 6.1 over the final seven games (including playoffs). Gore is no longer a candidate for 300 touches at age 30, but he's still the Niners' feature back. Another 250 touches is a safe projection.
Colin Kaepernick spent two weeks in April training with track athletes. Kaepernick believes he can "get faster and more efficient with his stride." He was certainly fast enough last year, averaging 6.6 yards per regular-season rush and ripping off a 25/264/3 line in three playoff games. With a full offseason under his belt as the starter and Anquan Boldin in the mix, Kaep is primed to go off. A top-three fantasy finish among quarterbacks should surprise no one.
49ers undrafted rookie H-back MarQueis Gray is trying to learn the old Delanie Walker role. Gray was a quarterback and wide receiver in college. Now the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder is being asked to do some in-line blocking, run routes and carry the ball a little. "It's very hard," he said, "but you've just got to stay in the playbook and overcome adversity. ... Blocking and terminology being up front with the big guys - that's the biggest part of being a tight end." Gray could use a year on the practice squad.
Seventh-round QB B.J. Daniels took snaps at running back and fielded punts at 49ers rookie minicamp. The 49ers are still listing Daniels as a quarterback, but he's well aware his passing "ability" isn't going to earn him a roster spot. "Whatever's asked of me to do, that's what I'm going to do," Daniels said. Unsigned rookie QB Collin Klein would be wise to adopt that credo. Proving he can do more than hold a clipboard at the NFL level could give Daniels a leg up on Scott Tolzien for No. 3 duties.
CSN Bay Area says 49ers fourth-round WR Quinton Patton is "nowhere close to being ready" to contribute. Route running was supposed to be Patton's bread and butter, but he showed poorly on patterns at 49ers rookie camp. He tends to get a bit anxious and will tip his routes. It's a flaw that can be coached up, so it's not a long-term concern. Patton should compete for No. 3 receiver duties as a rookie.
Although the 49ers' medical exam of Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) yielded positive results according to Jim Harbaugh, the coach says Lattimore must take a "step back" in terms of cutting drills. "The ACL looks really good for Marcus," insisted Harbaugh. "We're just going to have to take a step back in terms of the cutting because we want that inside of the knee, the lateral side of the knee to heal fully. But we're good." Lattimore conceded he'd be "fine" with sitting out the entire 2013 season. Harbaugh said the 49ers will determine his playing status at a later date.
49ers signed sixth-round ILB Nick Moody to a four-year contract. Somewhat undersized at 6-foot-1 and 236 pounds, Moody will compete for a roster spot behind Navorro Bowman and Patrick Willis. Moody played SAM 'backer at Florida State, but he'll move inside and run down kickoffs in San Francisco.
49ers agreed to terms with No. 252 overall pick CB Marcus Cooper on a four-year contract. The third to last pick of the draft, Cooper is facing long odds of cracking the 49ers' 53-man roster. He should be stashed on the practice squad where he'll be developed as a potential special teamer.
49ers agreed to terms with No. 246 overall pick OT Carter Bykowski on a four-year contract. A former tight end, Bykowski stands in at 6-foot-6, 306 pounds with 33 3/4-inch arms. He has the measurables, but has little shot of cracking the 49ers' loaded 53-man roster. Bykowski's most likely home is the practice squad.
49ers agreed to terms with No. 237 overall pick QB B.J. Daniels on a four-year contract. Daniels was drafted as a "quarterback," but will also get reps at running back, receiver and returner. An ineffective passer in the Big East, Daniels is not an elite runner. He's a roster longshot for a loaded 49ers team that has 11 draft picks to evaluate.
49ers agreed to terms with No. 157 overall pick DE Quinton Dial on a four-year contract. A solid but unspectacular talent, Dial is considered "50-50" by CSN Bay Area to make the team. Dial will likely be a five-technique end on defense, but he'll be a regular game-day inactive if he manages to crack the 53-man roster.
Frank Gore faced eight defenders in the box more than any other running back last season. Gore saw a stacked box 42.3 percent of the time, nearly double the league average of 23.3 percent. He still averaged 4.71 yards per carry and ranked 10th in the league with 1,214 rushing yards. Now that Colin Kaepernick will have a full offseason under his belt as the starter and Anquan Boldin has been added, the passing game will have to be respected more. Gore should see more seven-man fronts in 2013.
The 49ers signed Santella to a one-year contract. Santella started in the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Carolina in 2011 and went through training camp before being released on Aug. 27 of that year.
The 49ers "hope" second-round DE/OLB Tank Carradine (ACL surgery) will be ready for training camp. The 6-foot-4, 276-pound pass-rusher tore up his knee in November. He will not participate in this weekend's rookie minicamp. There's a pretty decent chance Carradine will begin the regular season the reserve/NFI list, costing him the first six games.
49ers LG Mike Iupati is recovering from shoulder surgery, but is expected to be ready for training camp. It's unknown when Iupati went under the knife, but he's expected to miss OTAs. Iupati suffered a "stinger" in Week 14 against the Dolphins, and began showing up on the injury report with a shoulder designation thereafter. A first-team All Pro in 2012, Iupati has never missed a game in three seasons, and played 98 percent of the 49ers' offensive snaps last year. The mauling run blocker should be fine for the preseason.
The San Francisco 49ers have signed guard Adam Snyder to a two-year contract, bringing him back to the franchise after a year with the Arizona Cardinals. The NFC champion Niners already have a steady offensive line intact to protect quarterback Colin Kaepernick, so Snyder might be fighting for playing time in his return. Arizona released the 31-year-old Snyder last Monday after taking two players at his position in the draft. He started 14 games for Arizona last season.
49ers signed OG Adam Snyder to a two-year contract. The 94th pick in the 2005 draft, 31-year-old Snyder returns home after a failed one-year stint in Arizona, where he was exposed as a sub-average starter to be kind. Back in San Francisco, Snyder will be a perfect swing backup with the ability to play three positions on the line -- right tackle and both guard spots.
CSN Bay Area considers CB Carlos Rogers a "lock" to stay on the 49ers' 53-man roster. Rogers was considered a potential cap casualty when the offseason began, but the 49ers guaranteed $1.25 million of his $5.85 million base salary and will almost certainly move forward with him as a starter. RCB Tarell Brown is considered the other "lock," with Chris Culliver and Tramaine Brock "looking good." Nnamdi Asomugha and Perrish Cox are considered "50-50" to make the team.
The 49ers are expected to place rookie Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) on the non-football injury list to open training camp. He'll get the NFI designation instead of PUP because Lattimore's injuries occurred in college and are not considered pro injuries. Lattimore will likely spend the first six games on the NFI list -- which operates just like PUP -- and the 49ers will reevaluate his progress thereafter. We don't anticipate any 2013 contribution from Lattimore, and the organization likely does not either.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh says fourth-round WR Quinton Patton reminds him of himself. In an ego-driven business, there couldn't be a higher compliment. Harbaugh made the comment in reference to Patton's ill-fated trip to 49ers' team headquarters last week. Patton flew to San Francisco on his own, unaware that draft picks aren't allowed to visit more than 24 hours after the draft. "The fact that he would buy his own ticket and fly out here, to me, just speaks volumes about him," Harbaugh said. "I love it. I can't wait." Jenkins a run for his money as they duke it out for No. 3 duties.
The 49ers are listing MarQueis Gray as a running back. Signed as an undrafted free agent shortly after the draft, Gray played wide receiver and quarterback at Minnesota. Presumably, he'll try to play an H-back type role, although he's probably a practice squad candidate at best.
CSN Bay Area doesn't consider 49ers fifth-round DE Quinton Dial a lock for a roster spot. Beat writer Matt Maiocco puts Dial's odds of making the team at 50-50. Fifth-round picks generally make the roster, but are never locks. Dial is part of an 11-man 49ers' draft class, leaving him even less room for error than usual.
CSN Bay Area considers 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha "50-50" to earn a roster spot. The same is true of CB Perrish Cox. The 49ers didn't address cornerback before their 11th and final pick of the draft, but have made no secret of the fact Asomugha will have to prove he's not finished to earn a roster spot. Asomugha will compete with Carlos Rogers for a starting job. A once-promising rookie for the Broncos before rape charges derailed his career, Cox was ineffective in 168 snaps on defense last season.
CSN Bay Area considers 49ers RB Anthony Dixon "50-50" to make the 53-man roster. Dixon earned his way onto the team last summer, but ended up playing just 32 offensive snaps. Dixon could be out of luck if fourth-round pick Marcus Lattimore (knee) manages to avoid the reserve/NFI list or injured reserve to begin the season.
49ers fourth-round WR Quinton Patton is expected to get a chance on both kick and punt returns. Patton was not used on returns while at Louisiana Tech last season, probably because he was busy catching 104 passes and 13 touchdowns. The Niners are looking for a return man after Ted Ginn Jr. signed with the Panthers in free agency. Patton is also expected to give A.J. Jenkins all he can handle as they battle for snaps behind starters Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.
49ers rookie RB Marcus Lattimore (ACL, PCL, LCL surgery) resumed running sprints two weeks ago and has been doing jumping drills. He'll resume agility work in "a few weeks" and has experienced "no setbacks." Lattimore anticipates being able to put on pads "in three to four months." NFL training camp begins in three months. "Whatever is best for my career or future, I'm good with it," Lattimore said. "The 49ers and the coaches there, we'll come to a conclusion of what we should do. I'm just so fired up, I'm excited about everything and just ready to work hard."
49ers seventh-round pick QB B.J. Daniels is expected to get reps at running back, receiver and returner in addition to quarterback. It's hardly a surprise, as Daniels isn't known for his passing. He has no shot at making it as an NFL quarterback. A flier for a 49ers team that was brimming with draft picks, Daniels is a roster long-shot.
The San Francisco 49ers selected quarterback B.J. Daniels of South Florida with the first of the three seventh-round selections in the NFL draft Saturday. Daniels said the team will give him an opportunity at quarterback, but the versatile 6-foot, 210-product also could get a shot at other positions after playing some defensive back in college. Daniels, the No. 237 overall selection, could fit in with the read-option offense the 49ers are now gravitating toward behind starter Colin Kaepernick and veteran newcomer Colt McCoy. Daniels passed for 2,078 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 426 yards and five touchdowns with South Florida last season.
49ers selected Rutgers CB Marcus Cooper with the No. 252 overall pick. Cooper did not have a ton of starting experience, but he becomes the seventh Rutgers player to be selected. He likely put forward a nice workout for team scouts and caught their attention. He is nothing more than depth.
49ers selected Iowa State OT Carter Bykowski with the No. 246 overall pick. Bykowski (6-foot-6 7/8, 306) ran 5.30 forty and did 25 reps on the bench press at the Cyclones' Pro Day. He has lengthy 33 3/4-inch arms. Bykowski started his college career as a tight end, and the legendary Gil Brandt thought he could go as high as the fourth round. He'll compete for a roster spot in San Francisco.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Moody out of Florida State with their sixth-round selection in the NFL draft Saturday. The 49ers continued to add prospects to fill voids on their defense with their fifth selection of the draft on that side of the ball. The versatile Moody is a candidate for multiple roles after starting at both safety and linebacker during his college career. Moody spent three seasons at safety with the Seminoles before moving to outside linebacker last year. At 6-foot-2 and 237 pounds, he also has potential to move to inside linebacker in San Francisco's 3-4 defensive scheme and could become a physical presence on special teams.
49ers selected Florida State LB Nick Moody with the No. 180 overall pick. Moody (6-foot-1, 236) was a physical free safety on the Seminoles' defense before converting to strong-side linebacker as a senior. He registered six career tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and a sack. Moody ran 4.71 at the Combine with a 1.59 ten-yard split and did 17 reps on the bench. Moody projects as a special teamer who could develop into a quality nickel 'backer for the ultra-deep Niners.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Dial out of Alabama with their fifth-round selection in the NFL draft Saturday, further strengthening an area in which the team lost two of its top players during free agency. The 49ers also used a second-round selection Friday to draft Florida State's Tank Carradine to fortify the team's defensive front wall. Carradine is expected to play at end in San Francisco's 3-4 defensive alignment while Dial is projected to play inside at nose tackle in the line rotation.
49ers selected Alabama DE Quinton Dial with the No. 157 overall pick. Dial visited the 49ers during the pre-draft process. He will most likely play the five technique end spot in the 49ers three man front. There's nothing flashy about Dial's game, but he flashes an anchor and was a consistent player at Alabama. Dial only registered eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Lattimore out of South Carolina with the second of their two fourth-round selections in the NFL draft Saturday. Lattimore comes to the 49ers after a junior season during which he suffered a career-threatening right knee injury in South Carolina's ninth game, one year after Lattimore suffered torn ligaments in his left knee midway through his sophomore season. Despite the injuries, Lattimore still set South Carolina school records with 38 career rushing touchdowns and 41 total touchdowns in just 29 games.

Lattimore (5-foot-11 1/4, 221) emerged on the national scene with 2,015 yards and 27 scores on his first 412 college carries (4.89 YPC). He tore his left ACL in October 2011 and returned as a shell of his old self in 2012, only to shred his right ACL, PCL, and LCL last October 27. Lattimore is a candidate to "redshirt" his rookie season, and there is no way to know what player he'll be upon return. With thunderous power and surprising agility, Lattimore looked like a top-10 pick in 2010-11. He ran with stiffness and less burst in 2012, looking more like a third- or fourth-rounder. Lattimore can be brought along slowly in San Francisco behind Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter.
49ers selected Louisiana Tech WR Quinton Patton with the No. 128 overall pick. Patton (6-foot, 204) blew up for 1,392 yards and 13 touchdowns on 104 receptions (13.4 YPR) as a senior. Not an outstanding athlete, Patton managed a 4.53 forty and 33-inch vertical at the Combine. With sure hands, toughness, and smooth routes, Patton drew pre-draft comparisons to Reggie Wayne but openly likens himself to Chad Johnson. Rotoworld draft columnist Alen Dumonjic's No. 1-rated receiver in the entire draft, Patton will open his career competing for playing time with A.J. Jenkins behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.

49ers selected Auburn OLB Corey Lemonier with the No. 88 overall pick. Lemonier (6-foot-3 3/8, 255) is a long-armed (34 1/2") speed rusher with 4.6-flat wheels and a blazing 1.57 ten-yard split time. He played defensive end in Auburn's 4-3, but will be a stand-up outside linebacker in San Francisco. Lemonier notched 17 sacks and 24 tackles for loss in his college career. He needs to improve getting off of blocks and maintaining consistent down-to-down focus. Lemonier will be brought along slowly in San Francisco behind Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Parys Haralson, and Tank Carradine. The 49ers are filthy rich with pass rushers.
San Francisco quickly filled another big need Friday night, trading up to select Rice tight end Vance McDonald with the 55th selection. The 49ers lost tight end Delanie Walker, Vernon Davis' backup, to the Titans last month in free agency. McDonald was surprised to be chosen by the 49ers. "I kind of just had the feeling it was going to be someone coming out of left field and grabbing me up, and that's pretty much what happened here," he said.
49ers traded up to select Rice TE Vance McDonald with the No. 55 overall pick, sending the Nos. 61 and 173 overall picks to the Packers. A late-riser in the pre-draft process, McDonald drew some comparison's to a poor man's Jason Witten. At 6-foot-4 1/8 and 267 pounds, he caught 107 passes for 1,386 yards (12.9 YPR) and 15 touchdowns over his final three college seasons, playing slot receiver in Rice's spread offense. McDonald showed physical blocking prowess, but is inexperienced as an in-line tight end. He is a very good athlete with a 4.69 forty time and 33.5-inch vertical. McDonald's biggest issue at Rice was dropped passes; he doesn't appear to have smooth, natural hands. He'll try to fill the Delanie Walker shoes.
49ers selected Florida State DE/OLB Tank Carradine with the No. 40 overall pick. Carradine would have been a certain first-round pick if not for a November ACL tear and medical concerns late in the draft process. The 6'4/276 fast-twitch rusher
was outplaying more heralded teammate Bjoern Werner before the tear. Pre-injury, Carradine amassed 13 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and a forced fumble in 11 games. Carradine closed out his FSU career with 16.5 sacks over his final 21 appearances. He ran 4.76 at his April 20 personal Pro Day. On tape, Carradine's non-stop quarterback pursuit jumps off the screen. He is a powerful rusher with a truly relentless motor. The ridiculously deep 49ers can afford to swing at upside here.
49ers ILB Patrick Willis agreed to a small contract restructure, converting $1.687 million of his scheduled $2.4 million salary into a "signing" bonus. The move pushes a small amount of cap space into 2014, and Willis' new base salary of $715,000 is now fully guaranteed. The 49ers now have $2.15 million in 2013 salary cap room. Willis is signed relatively cheaply through 2016 and is still only 28 years old. He's been a Pro Bowler in each of his six NFL seasons.
The 49ers believe No. 18 pick Eric Reid has the ability to be an "all-around safety." "He can play high, he can play low, he's done a lot in the back half, and he's done a lot moving up into the box," GM Trent Baalke said. "We felt he inserted strong and played the type of ball that we wanted to see out of safety." CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco believes the Niners will be disappointed if Reid can't earn a starting job opposite Donte Whitner "decisively." Reid should have what it takes to beat out Craig Dahl.
The San Francisco 49ers have selected Reid out of LSU with the 18th pick in the NFL draft after trading up to get the selection from the Dallas Cowboys. Safety was considered a significant need by general manager Trent Baalke for the reigning NFC champions, who lost All-Pro Dashon Goldson to Tampa Bay at the start of the league's free agency period in March. Reid played three seasons for LSU and is still considered a raw talent in pass coverage. He could make an immediate impact on kick coverage.
Running backs coach Jerald Ingram said free agent Brandon Jacobs is "hoping and praying and dying" to re-sign with the Giants. Ingram indicated the Giants have at least thought about bringing back Jacobs, who spent the first seven years of his career with the organization. But he'd only return as a strict backup to Andre Brown, a role Jacobs whined about in San Francisco last season. The Giants don't need the distraction.
NFL suspended free agent LB Larry Grant four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. This may explain Grant's cold free-agent market, although he wasn't expected to have a robust one in the first place. The 28-year-old is a fine special teams player and quality backup. Grant recently visited the Chiefs and Patriots, but he won't be eligible to return until Week 5.
49ers CB Chris Culliver is in hot water after posting insensitive remarks about women on his Instagram account. This would be the same Chris Culliver who made insensitive remarks about the LGBT community during Super Bowl week. Culliver pledged to "learn and grow" from his Super Bowl experience, but has clearly done neither. The 49ers are handling the matter "internally." Culliver can't afford any more off-the-field missteps after struggling on it during the playoffs.
Free agent LB Larry Grant worked out for the Patriots on Thursday. Grant, 28, appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers last season, but played just 21 defensive snaps as a backup to Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman. He'd fill a special teams and occasional nickel linebacker role if signed by the Pats.
Newly signed 49ers TE Cameron Morrah is not guaranteed a roster spot. Morrah has upside as a "move" tight end, but he put little on film through three injury-plagued seasons with the Seahawks. The 49ers are still expected to take a tight end at some point in next week's draft as they cobble together competition to replace Delanie Walker. Garrett Celek is also on the roster.
Kendall Hunter (Achilles surgery) still expects to be a full go for training camp. Hunter, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon on Nov. 25, recently resumed sprint work. He won't participate in OTAs or minicamps, but claims he's on track to battle for reps behind Frank Gore come August. Still, it would be an awfully quick recovery for Hunter. Note that Mikel Leshoure's rehab from the same injury lasted roughly 13 months. Leshoure also lacked burst upon return.
49ers signed TE Cameron Morrah, formerly of the Seahawks. Morrah, 26, has missed 37 games over his first four seasons, and he missed the entire 2012 season with a toe injury. Morrah skipped his senior season at Cal and ran a 4.66 forty at the Combine in 2009. He's more of a receiver than blocker, and has 16 catches for 194 yards over his career.
Colin Kaepernick believes second-year WR A.J. Jenkins is "progressing along," and "getting better." After reporting to the team out of shape, Jenkins spent the first 12 weeks of his rookie season on the bench. He's been working out with Kaepernick this offseason in an effort to refine his craft heading into year two. It's a good sign his quarterback has seen progress, as Jenkins is expected to have a bigger role following the departure of Randy Moss and injury to Mario Manningham. Jenkins saw just one target in 2012.
49ers OLB Aldon Smith (shoulder surgery) has resumed lifting weights. "Aldon is coming along," GM Trent Baalke said Wednesday. "He's probably not as far along (as Justin Smith). He's certainly getting back. ... I hate to put a percentage of it." The 49ers are taking things slow with their 23-year-old pass rusher, but he's expected to be ready for training camp.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock has signed his one-year tender. The team announced Monday that Brock had signed the contract he had been previously offered. Brock had 16 tackles and a forced fumble last season for the NFC champions, who lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. He also shared the team lead with 15 tackles on special teams. Brock joined the 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2010. In 2011, he made two interceptions in 11 games.
The Sacramento Bee confirms 49ers RE Justin Smith (triceps surgery) is on track for the start of training camp. Smith underwent surgery in February and has already shed his sling. He's currently in attendance at the Niners' offseason conditioning program. Smith, who turns 34 in September, is coming off of a 66-tackle, three-sack season.
CSN Bay Area confirms the 49ers have had "preliminary" extension talks with LG Mike Iupati, but that no deal is imminent. Per beat writer Matt Maiocco, there is no timetable on "striking an agreement." The 49ers' mauling left guard is coming off a monster 2012, but is still signed through 2014. Iupati would likely look to top new Titans G Andy Levitre (six years, $46.8 million) in any new deal, and could approach Carl Nicks money (five years, $47.5M).
The Chiefs recently visited with free agent LB Larry Grant. It's his first known visit this offseason. Grant was a non-factor with the 49ers last season and surprisingly played just 21 snaps on defense. He isn't going to get anything other than a one-year deal at this point, and could struggle to find a team that's willing to take a chance on him.
49ers WRs Kyle Williams (torn ACL) and Mario Manningham (torn ACL and PCL) will not participate in OTAs. Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.
Sources tell CSN Bay Area that RT Anthony Davis' new contract includes $7.25M in de-escalators if he fails to complete workout and weight requirements. Davis battled weight problems at Rutgers, where he enrolled as a 363-pound freshman. He weighed in at 323 pounds at the 2010 Combine and has been listed at that weight ever since. Davis' tonnage has been under control in San Francisco as he's started all 48 games and emerged as a cinch top-five right tackle at age 23.
The San Francisco Chronicle suggests LG Mike Iupati is "next in line" for a contract extension. Iupati was nothing short of dominant last season, earning first-team All-Pro honors and grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 5 overall guard. "In scouting, you live for those moments when you find someone that comes out at his position that isn't likely to come out for another five to 10 years," GM Trent Baalke said when asked about Iupati last fall. He's under contract through 2014 and will likely be seeking Andy Levitre kind of money (six years, $46.8M) in an extension.
A source tells the New York Post that the Giants have not ruled out bringing back free agent RB Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs is entering his age-31 season, has averaged 3.68 YPC over his last 16 games and has proven to be a whiner when he's not getting the rock. The door might not be fully closed, but there's only about a centimeter of light left. We doubt the Giants would really consider a reunion with Jacobs as depth behind David Wilson and Andre Brown, but they can certainly take their time with the decision. Jacobs' market is predictably ice cold.
The Seahawks inked Swain to a two-year deal, announcing the signing on their website on Monday. The 27-year-old Swain was drafted by Green Bay in 2008, taken in the seventh-round out of San Diego State. He caught six passes with Green Bay in the 2010 season and another two for San Francisco in 2011, but was among the 49ers' final cuts before the start of last season.
49ers DE Demarcus Dobbs is "well ahead of schedule" in his recovery from partial knee ligament tears suffered last December 9. Dobbs' agent says his client will probably be ready for training camp. Per the 49ers coaching staff's "points" system, Dobbs was San Francisco's top-rated special teamer in 2012. Dobbs is used sparingly on the defensive line.
The Detroit Lions have added Akers one day after Jason Hanson retired. San Francisco released Akers a month ago after he slumped during the 2012 season. The six-time Pro Bowl kicker made 73 of 94 field goals over two seasons for the 49ers. He underwent double hernia surgery in February 2012 then aggravated the area during the season when he slipped on the field during practice. Akers has made 367 of 453 field goals in his career with Washington, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
A person with knowledge of the contract says Davis and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed on a five-year extension through the 2019 season worth more than $37 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Friday because the team had yet to announce the deal. The contract totals $37.295 million, with $17 million guaranteed. The 23-year-old tackle has started 16 games in each of his first three years. He helped the 49ers win consecutive NFC West titles and reach the Super Bowl last season - a 34-31 loss to Baltimore.
49ers signed RT Anthony Davis to a five-year, $37.3 million extension through 2019, including $17 million guaranteed. The 2010 first-round pick had two years left on his rookie pact, making it a seven-year contract. He's now the NFL's fifth highest paid right tackle, behind Doug Free, Gosder Cherilus, David Stewart, and Phil Loadholt. Davis had a breakout 2012 sesson after the 49ers briefly considered moving him to guard in the offseason, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 right tackle. Although still not a dynamo in the passing game, Davis took a step forward in protection. Davis has started 48 consecutive games since coming into the NFL. He's still only 23. Both of Colin Kaepernick's starting tackles are now locked up through at least 2017.
New 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha blamed the Eagles' scheme for his struggles over the last two seasons. Asomugha played under strict man-to-man principles while earning a reputation as one of the best corners in the league with the Raiders. He was asked to do some different things in Philadelphia, but it's unfair to just blame the scheme for his woes. Asomugha consistently let receivers run right past him, showed declining make-up speed and struggled to track the ball. He ended up grading out 101st out of 113 NFL corners, according to ProFootballFocus.
Updating an earlier item, just $1.25 million of Carlos Rogers' $5.85 million salary became guaranteed by remaining on the roster through April 1. It was previously believed all of Rogers' salary became guaranteed on Monday, but just 21.2 percent of it did. It should still go a long way toward securing Rogers' roster spot following the signing of Nnamdi Asomugha, but Rogers could be approached about a pay-cut before Week 1.
Free agent ILB Tavares Gooden will visit the Cardinals on Thursday. That's if he escapes Pittsburgh without a deal. Gooden is visiting the Steelers on Wednesday. The special teamer and reserve linebacker will likely have a new home before the end of the week.

The fact first appeared on the SB Nation blog Niners Nation and has since been confirmed by Joel Corry of the National Football Post. The signing of Nnamdi Asomugha is no threat to Rogers' roster spot. He'll also collect $350,000 in offseason bonuses. Rogers turns 32 in July. His play has slipped off a career year in 2011, but Rogers remains a solid and versatile cover corner.
New 49ers QB Colt McCoy says he "feels great" health wise. McCoy missed an opportunity to make a Week 17 spot-start thanks to a shoulder injury, but is 100 percent. McCoy also said he has "nothing but great" things to say about the Browns organization, and harbors no ill-will about their infamous handling of his 2011 concussion. McCoy will compete with Scott Tolzien for No. 2 duties in San Francisco.
49ers agreed to terms with CB Nnamdi Asomugha, formerly of the Eagles, on a one-year contract. Asomugha chose the 49ers over the Saints and his former DC Rob Ryan. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal is worth "up to" $3 million, and includes a $1.35 million base salary. The rest is probably tied up in playing-time incentives. It includes no guaranteed money, per Asomugha's request. (He's getting $4 million guaranteed from the Eagles, anyway). CSN Bay Area reported last month that Asomugha wouldn't be guaranteed a starting job with the Niners, and would likely compete with Carlos Rogers. Rogers' $5.5 million salary may eventually necessitate his release, but for now Asomugha isn't locked into a starting role. If Asomugha is going to bounce-back, San Francisco is the place to do it, but it's possible his physical skills have eroded to the point he can no longer be even a serviceable player. Asomugha is going on age 32 and was burnt as regularly as any cornerback in football last season in Philadelphia.
McCoy's trade to the San Francisco 49ers has been finalized after the quarterback passed a physical Tuesday. McCoy showed up in Cleveland on Monday for the start of offseason conditioning only to learn he was headed West to play for ex-NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh and the two-time reigning NFC West champion Niners. San Francisco is sending a pair of undisclosed draft picks to the Browns.
49ers acquired QB Colt McCoy and a 2013 sixth-round pick from the Browns in exchange for 2013 fifth- and seventh-round draft picks. So Cleveland acquired a seventh-rounder and a nine-spot jump (No. 173 to No. 164) on the other pick. McCoy, 26, has a career completion rate of 58.3 with a 21:20 TD-to-INT ratio, 6.3 YPA, and 6-15 record. Arm-strength limitations put a major cap on McCoy's long-term NFL ceiling, and he's viewed as a mid-range to low-end backup around the league. Barring the addition of a mid-round QB, McCoy will compete with Scott Tolzien in training camp to be the primary clipboard holder behind Colin Kaepernick. We would not be surprised if Tolzien won the job.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports Kendall Hunter's Achilles' rehab is "ahead of schedule" and he will be ready when training camp opens. He's already resumed running. Hunter, 24, tore his left Achilles' on November 25 and will be eight months removed from the injury when camp begins. On 184 career carries, Hunter has averaged 4.59 yards per pop and scored four touchdowns. Also an asset in the passing game, Hunter should open the season ahead of LaMichael James and right behind Frank Gore if he maintains full health.
Michael Crabtree says he temporarily lost his vision in the Super Bowl after a big hit from Baltimore's Jimmy Smith. "I'm not one to whine about nothing, but he hit me all in the face and I couldn't really see after he hit me," Crabtree. "Then (my vision) just came back. It's not concussion-like. When you get hit, it's going to feel like you can't see. It's going to feel intense. But it snapped back. It happens all the time in football." It's obviously not a long-term concern for the 49ers' ascendant No. 1 receiver, but another reminder of the costs of playing football.
The 49ers "really like" RB Jewel Hampton. Signed as an undrafted rookie out of Southern Illinois, Hampton spent the majority of his rookie year on PUP, and didn't appear in a game. The 49ers may be high on Hampton's talent, but already have Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James and Anthony Dixon under contract at running back. Hampton would likely need Dixon to fall back out of favor to have any chance of making the 53-man roster.
Michael Crabtree said he felt Colin Kaepernick trusted him more than Alex Smith. In 10.5 games with Kaepernick (including playoffs), Crabtree averaged 5.9 catches for 88.6 yards and scored eight touchdowns. In 8.5 games with Smith, he was at 5.0 catches for 54.0 yards with four touchdowns. "Playing wide receiver, you need a quarterback who trusts you," Crabtree said. "I feel like he trusted me."
49ers WR Kyle Williams (torn ACL) ran Tuesday for the first time since going down in Week 12. Williams shared the news on his Twitter account. It's an important step, but Williams is still facing an uphill battle to get cleared before camp. He'll have to compete for a roster spot.
The 49ers gave DL Glenn Dorsey no assurances on his role when they signed him to a two-year, $6 million deal on March 13. "No, I'm coming into it trying to play whatever they want me to play," he said. "I don't have no set spot." Dorsey is penciled in (lightly) at nose tackle, but at 6-foot-1 and just over 300 pounds, it's not an ideal position in the Niners' 3-4. The 49ers would prefer Dorsey to fill Ricky Jean-Francois' shoes as a utility lineman capable of backing up all three positions up front.
CSN Bay Area doesn't believe a long-term extension for Michael Crabtree is among the 49ers' top priorities. Crabtree is signed through 2014, so there's no rush. Beat writer Matt Maiocco thinks new deals for Colin Kaepernick, OLB Aldon Smith, LG Mike Iupati, and RT Anthony Davis are higher priorities than Crabtree. All five players are scheduled to hit free agency in 2015. If Crabtree continues to play like he did with Kaepernick last season, San Francisco's thinking could change.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh has cautioned Colin Kaepernick not to get "too jacked-up." Kaepernick has spent the entire offseason in the gym. "If you're just talking about weightlifting and upper-body strength, yes, I think there is that fear," Harbaugh said. "It's something we've talked about. 'I don't want you getting too jacked-up, Colin.' I want some speed, quickness, not just (flexing chest his muscles)." It says a lot about Kaepernick's future that getting too strong is his coach's fear. Kaepernick could be on the precipice of a colossal fantasy campaign.
49ers re-signed S Darcel McBath to a one-year contract. McBath wasn't tendered as a restricted free agent, so he's likely coming back at the veteran's minimum. The former second-round pick out of Texas Tech doesn't contribute much on defense, but he's a key special teamer. McBath, 27, recorded seven tackles last season.
The San Francisco 49ers have signed McBath to a one-year contract, adding depth to the secondary. McBath is the second safety added by Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco since the start of free agency. The NFC champion Niners signed Craig Dahl to a three-year contract Saturday, another move to help fill the void left when Dashon Goldson received a five-year deal from Tampa Bay last week.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed OLB Aldon Smith (shoulder surgery) is expected to be ready for the beginning of training camp. Harbaugh also believes Smith is beginning to become a more mature player and person. "This is just an observation, but he's changing," Harbaugh said. "You can see it in his face and his body. He's kind of going from that lad -- kind of a strong, very mature lad -- to a grown man. I think that's another good thing." Smith should be motivated by his down finish to an otherwise excellent 2012.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is "fired up" about WR Ricardo Lockette. Welcome to the offseason, where end-of-roster talents get talked up as potential breakout players. "There's just something about him that I'm really fired up about," Harbaugh said. "He's got something else to him, too, besides just the analytical size, strength, speed. There's something special there. I just feel it." Where there's one pump-up article, there's usually another, but it's very hard to see track athlete Lockette making an impact in 2013.
The Panthers offered free agent KR/WR Ted Ginn a contract during his visit. "I know our guys really spoke highly of his visit," Rivera said. "The interesting thing about Ted is he gives us some depth at wide receiver who can challenge for playing time opportunity. But also he's got special teams value, which is big." If Rivera's comments are any indication, Ginn should become a Panther sometime in the next 48 hours.
The San Francisco 49ers have found their new kicker to replace David Akers, signing Browns veteran free agent Phil Dawson to a one-year contract. The Pro Bowl kicker announced earlier Tuesday via Twitter that he had joined the NFC champion Niners, who parted ways with the six-time Pro Bowler Akers on March 6 following a season in which he made only 29 of 42 attempts a year after he kicked an NFL single-season record 44 field goals.
Moore is coming home to the West Coast and his native Northern California, with a chance to contribute to the San Francisco 49ers team he grew up watching. The NFC champion Niners added depth to their new-look receiving group by signing the wideout to a one-year contract Tuesday. Moore played college football at Fresno State, wrapping up his career with 90 receptions for 1,374 yards and 10 touchdowns.
49ers signed WR Marlon Moore, formerly of the Dolphins, to a one-year contract. Moore appeared in 14 games last season, but could never crack the Dolphins' wafer-thin receiver rotation. He finished with six catches for 116 yards. San Francisco is similarly lean at wideout, but Moore will be facing an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster.
Free agent KR/WR Ted Ginn visited the Panthers on Tuesday. It's Ginn's second visit after he stopped by Cincinnati last week. Carolina needs help at receiver, but Ginn would likely be signed as a pure return specialist.
49ers agreed to terms with K Phil Dawson, formerly of the Browns. The 49ers are replacing David Akers with the best kicker on the market. Dawson has spent his entire 14-year career with the Browns, and was an original member of the "new" Browns in 1999. He's converted 84 percent of his 363 career field-goal attempts, and was 29-of-31 (93.5 percent) in 2012. The 49ers aren't going to have to worry about shanks this season.
