UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Jarome Iginla spent parts of 17 seasons as the go-to guy for the Calgary Flames, on and off the ice. A star player and overall leader on a club that was often outside the hockey spotlight, the fact he forged what will surely be a Hall of Fame career is a testament to his skills. |

With Roman Cervenka reportedly heading back to the KHL for the 2013-14 campaign, the experiment is over. The Calgary Flames took a chance on Cervenka after he dominated in the KHL, but he was never able to adjust to playing in North America. That being said, his tenure with the Flames wasn't disastrous. In fact, with nine goals and 17 points in 39 games, he probably would have gotten another shot with the Flames or a different NHL team if that's what he wanted. At the same time, he highlights the risk associated with grabbing mid-20s European star that has no prior North American experience. Sometimes it works out, but drafting a player in a fantasy league with those credentials is a roll of the dice. |

Leland Irving's time with the Calgary Flames is likely done. Irving is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and the Flames have given little indication that they feel he's part of their future plans. He had a 3.33 GAA and .883 save percentage in six games this season. Irving's agent Ritch Winter naturally sang his client's praises, both saying that Irving will become a solid number one goaltender in the NHL and would like to re-sign with Calgary. Perhaps Irving will eventually become a good number one goaltender, but we don't have high short-term expectations for him. However, that could change if he signs with a team that lacks major competition. |

Mark Giordano was the Calgary Flames' nominee for the King Clancy trophy, which goes to the player "that best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy contribution in his community." Giordano does a ton of charity work off the ice, from golf tournaments to working with Habitat for Humanity. He was also one of the Flames who refused to pack it in and tank for a better shot at the top pick in draft at the end of the season. The winner will be announced at the NHL awards show during the Stanley Cup final. |

Matthew Stajan is happy with how he did in 2013. "I think it was my best year personally," Stajan said. "The coaching staff showed a lot of confidence in me early in the season and gave me an opportunity. I really appreciated that and wanted to make the best of it. I felt like I did a pretty good job." Stajan had five goals and 23 points in 43 games after recording just 18 points in 61 contests in 2011-12. It's certainly a step up, but we don't anticipate him having much fantasy value in standard leagues next season. |

Joey MacDonald says he's feeling better after going to the hospital on a stretcher following Friday's loss to the Blackhawks. MacDonald returned to Calgary on Saturday and there appears to be no lingering effects from the incident. The 33-year-old netminder could be in position to compete for Calgary's starting job next season if Miikka Kiprusoff retires as many expect. |

With Roman Cervenka reportedly heading back to the KHL for the 2013-14 campaign, the experiment is over. The Calgary Flames took a chance on Cervenka after he dominated in the KHL, but he was never able to adjust to playing in North America. That being said, his tenure with the Flames wasn't disastrous. In fact, with nine goals and 17 points in 39 games, he probably would have gotten another shot with the Flames or a different NHL team if that's what he wanted. At the same time, he highlights the risk associated with grabbing mid-20s European star that has no prior North American experience. Sometimes it works out, but drafting a player in a fantasy league with those credentials is a roll of the dice.
Roman Cervenka has reportedly signed a three-year deal to return to the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg. He had trouble adapting to the North American game with the Calgary Flames during the lockout-shortened season. He recorded only nine goals and eight assists in 39 matches.
Leland Irving's time with the Calgary Flames is likely done. Irving is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and the Flames have given little indication that they feel he's part of their future plans. He had a 3.33 GAA and .883 save percentage in six games this season. Irving's agent Ritch Winter naturally sang his client's praises, both saying that Irving will become a solid number one goaltender in the NHL and would like to re-sign with Calgary. Perhaps Irving will eventually become a good number one goaltender, but we don't have high short-term expectations for him. However, that could change if he signs with a team that lacks major competition.
Mark Giordano was the Calgary Flames' nominee for the King Clancy trophy, which goes to the player "that best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy contribution in his community." Giordano does a ton of charity work off the ice, from golf tournaments to working with Habitat for Humanity. He was also one of the Flames who refused to pack it in and tank for a better shot at the top pick in draft at the end of the season. The winner will be announced at the NHL awards show during the Stanley Cup final.
Matthew Stajan is happy with how he did in 2013. "I think it was my best year personally," Stajan said. "The coaching staff showed a lot of confidence in me early in the season and gave me an opportunity. I really appreciated that and wanted to make the best of it. I felt like I did a pretty good job." Stajan had five goals and 23 points in 43 games after recording just 18 points in 61 contests in 2011-12. It's certainly a step up, but we don't anticipate him having much fantasy value in standard leagues next season.
Joey MacDonald says he's feeling better after going to the hospital on a stretcher following Friday's loss to the Blackhawks. MacDonald returned to Calgary on Saturday and there appears to be no lingering effects from the incident. The 33-year-old netminder could be in position to compete for Calgary's starting job next season if Miikka Kiprusoff retires as many expect.
Mikael Backlund has a right foot fracture and won't play for Sweden in the world championships. Backlund had eight goals and 16 points in 32 games this season, although it's now fair to wonder how long he's been playing with this injury considering he played through the final game of the year. Backlund is scheduled for restricted free agency this summer and this injury certainly won't help his case. Regardless, the former first-round pick is unlikely to have any fantasy value in most formats.
Curtis Glencross thinks that Miikka Kiprusoff will retire. "He's kind of said that he's pretty much done, I think," Glencross said. "Unless something changes over the summer here or the next couple of weeks, just talking to him, I don't think he'll be back." Other teammates such as Lee Stempniak and Joey MacDonald aren't as sure, but it may be that we have seen the last of Miikka Kiprusoff in the Calgary cage.
T.J. Brodie was thrilled to be invited to join Team Canada for the upcoming World Championships by GM Steve Yzerman. Brodie grew up a Red Wings fan and a Steve Yzerman fan to boot so the phone call meant a lot to the 21-year-old defenseman. "It's sort of weird watching him growing up and being so close to Detroit and stuff," Brodie said. "To talk to him on the phone is sort of a weird feeling, I guess. Watching your idol and getting to talk to him it's a cool experience." A fourth round pick in the 2008 Draft, Brodie had two goals and 14 points in 47 games while averaging over 20 minutes of action per game. He is worth a selection late in deep pools next season.
Alex Tanguay admitted that he was distracted the last month of the season after teammates Jarome Iginla and Jay Bouwmeester were dealt away. Tanguay missed the last two weeks of the season with a medial collateral ligament sprain in his knee. "I was playing pretty good the first 20 to 25 games of the year, and then when the distraction came about, I think mentally I got a little bit affected by it," Tanguay said. "And that's on me. You have to be a professional. You have to play your best every night. But I've got some good years of hockey ahead of me, and I'm hoping that I can be a key contributor in this organization." Tanguay has three years left on his contract at $3.5 million per season and could be a candidate to be bought out by the Flames. Stay tuned.
Michael Cammalleri underwent some dental work on Sunday. Cammalleri was injured during the lockout when Steve Stamkos took a shot that knocked out his front teeth. Cammalleri has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $5.968 million while receiving $7 million so he could be dealt or bought out in the off-season, if the Flames are looking to pare salary.
Flames forward Roman Horak gained valuable experience in the NHL this season and is hoping to be a larger contributor next season. "This summer is going to be huge. Hopefully, next year I can be a part of this team," said Horak, who is one of the top prospects in the Calgary system.
Flames forward Roman Cervenka suffered a grade-1 sprain of his medial-collateral ligament in Friday's season finale. With the Flames not playing in the postseason Cervenka will have ample time to recover from a relatively minor knee ailment and should have no problem recovering in time for the start of training camp.
After stopping 35 shots in the Flames' 3-1 loss to the Blackhawks, Calgary goaltender Joey MacDonald remained in Chicago overnight in Chicago because he was feeling ill. MacDonald battled the flu during the Flames' road trip. The Flames had a nightmarish 2013 and their season is over. MacDonald, however, may be a keeper for Fantasy owners. Scouts suggest he has plenty of upside.
Chris Butler potted a goal in the Flames' 3-1 loss to the Blackhawks Friday night. Butler was drafted by the Sabres in 2005 and spent parts of three seasons with Buffalo in a limited role before moving on with the Flames. He's not expected to have any fantasy value in standard leagues next season.
Joey MacDonald allowed three goals on 38 shots in Calgary's 3-1 loss at the hands of the Blackhawks on Friday. It's hard to be taken seriously when your team's goaltender is MacDonald, but tonight was not a terrible outing. Look for MacDonald to serve as Calgary's backup next season or split the goaltending duties with one of the Flames' young netminders.
Jiri Hudler recorded an assist on Thursday. Hudler has 10 goals and 27 points in 42 games this season. His season got off to a good start, but he ended up being somewhat streaky in 2013 and never remarkably good. This is season one of his four-year, $16 million contract.
Sven Baertschi was the only Calgary goal scorer in a 4-1 loss to the Blues Thursday. Baertschi has enjoyed a late-season scoring streak, notching three goals and six assists over a seven game span. Jiri Hudler drew the only assist on the marker.
Joey MacDonald allowed four goals on 20 shots in Calgary's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Blues on Thursday. The Flames are simply playing out the string at this juncture so not much can be drawn from the result. Look for MacDonald to serve as Calgary's backup next season.
Joey MacDonald will be in Calgary's cage Thursday night when the Flames play in St. Louis. He has won four of his past five starts and his last outing was an impressive 34-save effort in Minnesota on April 21 where he helped Calgary earn a 4-1 victory.
Mark Cundari is looking forward to playing against his former franchise, the St. Louis Blues, on Thursday. Calgary acquired Cundari in the Jay Bouwmeester trade. Cundari never ended up playing for the Blues, but he has a goal and three points in two games with Calgary. "Once I'm here, I can add my flavour to the team," says Cundari. "It's not going to be the same player as Jay Bouwmeester, but it's going to be Mark Cundari's version of what an NHL defenceman needs to be. He's an elite defenceman. To be the only defenceman coming back the other way, that meant something to me. It's something I'll never forget. Huge shoes to fill."
Sven Baertschi contributed two assists in Calgary's 4-3 loss to Nashville on Tuesday night. The rookie forward has collected two goals and eight points during his season-long six-game scoring streak. Baertschi had one assist in his previous 13 games with the Flames this season. Feel free to take a flier on him during his hot streak to end the year and keep him close in keeper formats.
Steve Begin, 34, is the Calgary Flames nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, as chosen by the Calgary Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. The Masterton goes to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey and the league award has been won by a pair of Calgary Flames in the past. Those winners were Lanny McDonald and Gary Roberts. "When you love the game, it's easy," said Begin, who has collected four goals and eight points in 36 games this season. "When you like playing hockey, it's like a kid in a candy store. You just go out and have fun. That's what hockey is about. If you like what you're doing, it makes it easier for you."
Blair Jones was called up from the minors on Tuesday April 23.
Dennis Wideman returned to action on Tuesday from a broken finger. He had two shots and a minus-1 rating in just over 24 minutes of ice time after missing only two games with the ailment.
Miikka Kiprusoff made 28 stops in a 4-3 loss against Nashville on Tuesday. He had won his previous two outings prior to Tuesday night's defeat. His retirement watch will begin after the Flames play their final game of the 2013 campaign on Friday.
Roman Cervenka netted two goals in Calgary's 4-3 loss to Nashville Tuesday night. Cervenka has four points in his last three games. Chris Butler and Sven Baertschi, who is riding a six-game point streak, had two assists each in the contest. T.J. Brodie had the Flames' other goal in the loss.
Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to start in goal Tuesday night. The Kiprusoff farewell tour continues as the Finnish netminder plays out what he says will be his final NHL season. Perhaps spurred by his retirement plans, Kipper has been excellent in his last two starts, allowing three total goals and winning both contests.
Steve Begin has an upper-body injury and won't play Tuesday night. Begin has four goals and eight points in 36 games and has no fantasy relevance whatsoever.
Cory Sarich suffered a broken nose Sunday when he got into a fight with Minnesota's Clayton Stoner. Sarich managed to practice Monday and is likely to play on Tuesday. "I'm fine," Sarich said. "It's a little tender. I don't think I'd want to take one off it again any time soon. Other than that, it's all right." Sarich has not played a lot this season and has only two assists in 27 games.
Carter Bancks may be making his NHL debut on Tuesday. Bancks has spent the last three seasons with Abbotsford of the AHL and had five goals and 12 points in 53 games. He has been practicing alongside Akim Aliu and Paul Byron and with the Flames eliminated from the post-season, they are giving some of their minor leaguers a look see down the stretch. "I'm already pretty nervous just coming to practices," the undrafted Bancks said. "I mean, I've worked my whole life for this opportunity. It hasn't always been the easiest way for me . . . but it's definitely worth it to come up here for this last week. It's already been a tonne of fun, a great experience." Stay tuned.
Mark Cundari made his NHL debut a special one as he scored once and added an assist in the Flames 4-1 win over Minnesota. The defenseman was dealt from the Blues before the deadline as part of the Jay Bouwmeester trade and certainly showed off his skills Sunday. "Right now, there's a bunch of his buddies in Market Lane - people know what that is in Woodbridge (Ont.) - honking their horns as if Italy won the World Cup," teammate Michael Cammalleri said. "I'm sure that's what it feels like right now in Woodbridge. But hey, that's how you script it - first game. I'm sure he's all smiles. We'll see if he gets any sleep."
Cundari opened his NHL career with quite the impression, scoring a goal and tallying an assist in Calgary's 4-1 win over Minnesota on Sunday. It was a stellar debut for Cundari, a former undrafted player who the Flames acquired from the Blues in a trade earlier this April.
Cammalleri scored a goal and assisted on another in Calgary's 4-1 win over Minnesota on Sunday. It marked his second straight game with two points as he had two assists his last time out. He pushed his season total to 32 points.
Ben Street was called up from the minors on Sunday. Street played 14:21 minutes with a couple of shots on net. He has no fantasy value.
Chris Butler (flu) returned to action on Sunday. Butler played 19:27 minutes in the 4-1 win over Minnesota but was a minus-one. He had a shot on goal, two blocked shots and three hits in the contest.
Paul Byron (fractured hand) was activated from the IL on Sunday. Byron has had a tough NHL campaign as he fractured his hand in his season debut on Feb. 13 when he was slashed by then Dallas Star Derek Roy. He played 14:57 minutes with one shot on goal and a couple of hits.
Michael Cammalleri scored a goal and added an assist in Calgary's 4-1 win over the Wild on Sunday. With 32 points in 42 contests Cammalleri has quietly enjoyed a productive season despite the overall struggles experienced by the team surrounding him. Mikael Backlund, Mark Cundari and Jiri Hudler also found the back of the net for the Flames in the victory.
Joey MacDonald blocked 34 of 35 shots Sunday as the Flames surprised Minnesota with a 4-1 win. Fresh off signing a new contract with the Flames, MacDonald was the star of the show on this night. Despite the strong outing he's not worth adding in fantasy leagues.
Glencross is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Glencross sustained the injury against Anaheim on Friday night.
Curtis Glencross will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. Glencross suffered the injury in Friday's win over Anaheim after he was hit by Ducks defenseman Ben Lovejoy in a knee-on-knee collision. "I don't have the medical terms but he's not coming on the trip. Not good," saod coach Bob Hartley when asked about the forward. Glencross ends the season with 15 goals in 40 games, which is likely more than his fantasy owners expected at the start of the campaign.
Joey MacDonald has inked a one-year, one-way contract with the Calgary Flames. MacDonald will reportedly earn $925,000 in 2013-14. MacDonald provides the Flames with some insurance in case Miikka Kiprusoff decides to retire. If Kiprusoff does retire, then MacDonald will likely split the goaltending duties pretty evenly with one of Calgary's young netminders.
Curtis Glencross was forced to leave Friday's win over Anaheim after apparently injuring his knee in a collision with the Ducks Ben Lovejoy. Glencross was on the receiving end of a questionable knee-on-knee hit and immediately limped off the ice. There is no additional news regarding his condition, but we would expect him to be sidelined for at least a few days as a result of this.
If Miikka Kiprusoff follows through on his plans to retire at the end of the season, Friday's victory over Anaheim will go down as his final appearance on home ice in Calgary. Kiprusoff's career would end with a 197-89-4-33 record at the Saddledome and few of the outings will be as memorable as his last. He looked like vintage Kipper, stopping 32 of 33 shots to lift a poor Flames team over a vert strong Anaheim club. "It was an unbelievable feeling," Kiprusoff said of the crowd. "If you look at some other Canadian cities, it can be tough times for goalies. The crowd can be tough on them, but I've been lucky."
Mikka Kirprusoff was fantastic in Calgary's 3-1 victory over Anaheim Friday night, making 32 saves and shutting down one of the best offences in the league. Kiprusoff's second straight win comes after six straight losses. The final year of his career has not been a memorable one as he continues to post career lows in nearly every statistic.
Mike Cammallerri notched two assists in Calgary's 3-1 win over the Ducks Friday night. Cammallerri now has 30 points in 41 games played this season and is a key figure in Calgary's sub-par offence.
Brian McGrattan made a big splash in his return from a shoulder injury. The Flames' tough guy, who had been sidelined the last two weeks, had a game to remember. He scored the winning goal in Calgary's 3-1 defeat of Anaheim and was selected as the game's third star. Not too shabby considering McGrattan only was on the ice for 10:08 and 15 shifts.
Chris Butler is probable Friday even though he has the flu. Butler has five points and 19 penalty minutes in 39 games this season. You would have to be in a particularly deep league to justify owning Butler.
Although Calgary called up Mark Cundari this afternoon, he will probably be a healthy scratch tonight. Chris Butler will is projected to play despite the fact that he's battling the flu. That being said, Cundari will still probably make his NHL debut before the season's over. "He's gonna spend a couple of good days (practising) with us and we'll see him in action," Flames coach Bob Hartley said.

John Ramage has agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames. Ramage will get a base salary of $600,000 annually and can earn up to $900,000 per season at the NHL level. The deal will start with the 2013-14 campaign. He had 20 points and 65 penalty minutes in 42 games with the University of Wisconsin this season.
Miikka Kiprusoff reinforced his desire to wait until the end of the season to decide if he wants to extend his career. Kiprusoff still has a season remaining on his contract, but because his contract was heavily front-loaded, his salary will drop to $1.5 million in 2013-14 if he decides to play. Kiprusoff had a solid start on Wednesday, but this has been a rough season for him overall. He has a horrible 3.53 GAA and .877 save percentage in 22 contests.
Although the Sven Baertschi's career is beginning as an era ends in Calgary, he appreciates the brief overlap. "I don't take it for granted, that's for sure," Baertschi said, "being able to say you played with Miikka Kiprusoff, with Jarome Iginla. That's special, for any young player. A dream. Those guys, they are where the rest of us want to be. But few of us will get to. They're all-timers. So you watch, and you learn, while you can." Iginla has already been traded and Kiprusoff might retire this summer. Baertschi meanwhile is a highly regarded prospect that could eventually become one of those players that youngsters feel grateful for being able to play with.
Kiprusoff made 36 saves Wednesday in a 3-2 win over Detroit. Kiprusoff had lost his previous six starts.
Begin scored two goals in the third period, and the Calgary Flames held on to hand the playoff-hopeful Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 loss on Wednesday night. Begin had no goals in his previous 10 games.
Sven Baertschi is on a three-game point streak. Baertschi has two goals and four points in that span. He's had trouble establishing himself in the NHL earlier this season, but seems to have found his groove lately. Look for him to finish the season on a positive note.
Roman Cervenka spent Wednesday's game in the press box. At the age of 27, Cervenka has been trying to make the transition from European hockey to the NHL. It hasn't exactly been a smooth process, but don't forget about him. Cervenka might still breakout in 2013-14 after he has the shortened season under his belt.
Retired goaltender Mike Vernon doesn't think Miikka Kiprusoff will retire this summer. "I wouldn't be surprised if Kipper comes back for one more year," Vernon said. "He's still got it. I've come and watched a few games, and I love watching him. He's worth the admission. And the fans love it, too. They come to watch the Flames, but the focus is on Kiprusoff." Kiprusoff has struggled this season, but he did stop 36 of 38 shots to win what may have been his final home start of his career.
Matthew Stajan (upper body) returned to the Calgary Flames' lineup on Wednesday. Stajan missed four games due to the injury. He had a plus-one rating in 16:03 minutes of ice time.
Kenneth Agostino will return to Yale for the 2013-14 campaign. Agostino is just one year away from finishing his degree in political science. "It was a tough decision. It's a big decision. I went back and forth for a while, looking at both sides of it," Agostino said. "Ultimately, after talking with my family, I realized I worked extremely hard at school. I might not be the smartest guy, but I worked really hard the last three years to put myself in this position to be one year away from getting that diploma, and I would really like to see that through." Agostino is expected to sign with Calgary once he decides to begin his pro career. The Flames acquired him from the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the Jarome Iginla trade.
Matthew Stajan returned to action on Wednesday April 17.
Wednesday's 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings might just be the last great performance of Miikka Kiprusoff's career if he ends up retiring after this season. The Finnish netminder is now 7-13-2, a disaster by just about any measure (especially since his .877 save percentage and 3.53 GAA make him look just as bad).
The Calgary Flames got a surprising boost from aging forward Steve Begin on Wednesday during their almost-as-unexpected 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings. Begin's two tallies including what was eventually the game-winner. He only had two goals and four assists coming into tonight's games, so he now has eight points on the season.
Reto Berra has inked a one-year, entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames. He was acquired from St. Louis as part of the Jay Bouwmeester deal. Berra is currently playing for Biel in the Swiss A League, where he has posted a 3.01 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage in 49 games.
Miikka Kiprusoff will be back in goal when Calgary hosts Detroit Wednesday night. Joey MacDonald had started the team's previous three matches. The Flames have just one home game left after Wednesday's contest, so Kiprusoff could be playing in his final games at the Scotiabank Saddledome with the prospect of retirement in his mind.
Sven Baertschi has been focused on playing a grittier game since being called up. "When I came up, I was excited," Baertschi said. "I knew I had a lot to make up for and I had to prove something. I came up and switched my game a little. I wanted to play hard and gritty. I know I can score goals and make plays, but there's other parts of the game that I had to learn and Bob (Hartley) and the assistant coaches really helped me." Baertschi has a ton of offensive potential and even though he struggled with the Flames this season, he's still worth keeping a close eye on during Calgary's 2013 training camp.
Miikka Kiprusoff admitted that he might retire at the end of this season. "Yeah, I've thought about it," Kiprusoff said. "Especially now when you guys bring it up. But . . . yeah. Like I say, there's a chance." Kiprusoff will start on Wednesday in what could be his last game in Calgary. His season has been disastrous and he's on a six-game losing streak, but if we are nearing the end of his career, perhaps he can finish it on a positive note.
George Johnson of the Calgary Herald thinks that the Flames should re-sign goaltender Joey MacDonald. MacDonald has been terrific since he was picked up off the waiver wire by the Flames on Feb. 11. He has played extremely well in place of Miikka Kiprusoff who is having a horrible season as MacDonald is 7-7-1 with a 2.91 GAA and a .900 save percentage, much better than Kipper's 6-13-1 record with a 3.61 GAA and a .872 save percentage. With Kiprusoff leaning towards retirement at the end of the season, MacDonald will give the Flames a veteran in net for the young and raw Flames in 2013-14.
Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to get the start on Wednesday for the Calgary Flames. Kiprusoff has not played in four of the last five games for the Flames as he has been a bit banged up and not exactly having the best season of his NHL career. Kiprusoff is a weak 6-13-2 this season with worse peripherals as he has a 3.61 GAA and a .872 save percentage. If Kiprusoff does retire, as has been talked about, there will not be many more chances to see him play as he was a great netminder for many seasons in Calgary.
Sven Baertschi scored on Monday for the second consecutive game. This is after Baertschi failed to score all season in NHL action, so the 20-year-old future star is getting his game back in order. "He skated well," coach Bob Hartley said of Baertschi. "The more the young man touches the puck, the more he can make good things happen . . . Slowly but surely, he's coming back, and that's very important for us." Baertschi is one young Flame that the team is counting on to take them back into the playoffs, but that could take a few years. He is worth owning in all keeper pools.
Curtis Glencross (flu) returned to action on Monday. Glencross played 17:49 minutes in a 4-3 loss to the Wild. He had an assist along with three shots on goal. Glencross is having another fine season with 15 goals and 26 points in 38 games. He is worth owning in deeper pools.
Calgary newcomer Ben Hanowski, a Minnesota native, scored in his National Hockey League debut Monday night in the Flames' 4-3 loss to the Wild. Hanowski grew up cheering for the Wild. Also scoring goals for Calgary Monday were Jiri Hudler (ninth) and rookie Sven Baertschi (second).
Flames goaltender Joey MacDonald stopped 23 shots but allowed four to the Minnesota Wild in a 4-3 loss in Calgary Monday night. MacDonald had been enjoying his best stretch of the season, stopping 96 of 100 shots while winning his last three starts. He has been playing in place of Miikka Kiprusoff, who has lost his last six games.
Ben Street has been sent down by the Calgary Flames. Street has 15 goals and 36 points in 67 AHL games this season. He's also played in three NHL games and is searching for his first NHL point.
Joey MacDonald will get the nod on Monday. It will be MacDonald's third straight start. He has allowed just four goals in three games since his disastrous 8-2 loss to Edmonton on April 3.
Tim Jackman had his best fantasy game of the season on Saturday. The big winger had two assists, six shots on goal and seven hits in the Flames 4-1 win over Edmonton. He now has a goal and four assists with 33 shots on goal and 55 penalty minutes in 37 games. He has 17 SOG in his last seven games after getting only 16 in his first 30.
Max Reinhart, who scored his first NHL goal on Saturday was minus-26 in the AHL when he was recalled a week ago. Reinhart was third worst in the AHL, a stat that caused Calgary coach Bob Hartley to chuckle when talking to his young center. "The first couple of games (in the NHL), he was feeling his way," Hartley said. "I brought him in and I said `Max, you have to jump. You have to take advantage of this.' I said, `Let's face it, there's not too many kids with a minus-26 rating being called up from the American League,' and he started to laugh. I said, `Never mind this. You're in the NHL. We don't care. We're going to work with you. We're going to teach you, but show passion. Show that you like the game.' So far, he's showing lots of great things to us." Reinhart has a minus-one rating in five NHL games so far.
Sven Baertschi scored his first goal of the season Saturday. It was a big game for the young winger who went over a calendar year since his last NHL goal, albeit less than 20 games. "I'm happy it's over," Baertschi said. "I had a heavy backpack for a while. Now I just dropped it and now I can just keep going. It feels much better now." The Flames sent Baertschi to the minors for four weeks on March 8 and it did wonders for the future star of the Flames. Do not forget about him next season, especially in keeper leagues.
Coach Bob Hartley has been really impressed with the play of rookie defenseman T.J. Brodie. Brodie had two assists on Saturday and was the first star of the game against the Flames hated rivals, the Edmonton Oilers. "He's just amazing," Hartley said. "He has so many skills. Like his skating is just sick." Brodie has only one goal and 11 points in 40 games this season but he has a spot on the top power play and has three assists in his last two games. He looks like a sleeper in next season's pools unless you live in Calgary or are a big Flames fan.
Curtis Glencross did not play on Saturday due to the flu. Glencross could be ready to go tonight as the Flames host the Wild. Stay tuned.
MacDonald finished with 28 saves in a 4-1 win over Edmonton on Saturday. MacDonald has won three straight starts with a 1.30 goals-against average over that span.
Dennis Wideman scored a goal on Saturday. Wideman has six goals and 22 points in 41 games. He's leading the team with an average of 25:06 minutes per contest.
Mikael Backlund found the back of the net on Saturday. Backlund has seven goals and 14 points in 26 games. The Flames don't have much left to play for as a team, but every point Backlund gets will help him in his contract negotiations. He's scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer.
Max Reinhart scored his first NHL goal on Saturday. Reinhart now has two points in five games. With the Flames' playoffs hopes long since vanquished, Reinhart has been getting his first taste of NHL action.
Joey MacDonald responded to last Wednesday's eight goal shellacking from the Oilers to beat them 4-1 on Saturday night for his third straight win. MacDonald has posted remarkable numbers in his three wins since the blowout last week, allowing just four goals on 90 shots since.
Sven Baertschi scored a goal and an assist as the 2011 first round pick helped Calgary defeat their provincial rivals Edmonton 4-1 on Saturday night. This was easily Baertschi's best game of his short career, which spans 19 games over the past two years. Another Flames youngster Max Reinhart scored his first NHL goal on Saturday night too.
Tanguay is likely to miss the rest of the season with a sprained MCL. He had 11 goals and 16 assists in 40 games.
Glencross returned Monday for the Flames. Glencross missed Saturday's game with the flu.
Miikka Kiprusoff is a apparently a little banged up, so Joey MacDonald will start again for the Calgary Flames Saturday night. The Flames defeated Phoenix in overtime Friday night with MacDonald in goal, so there's no point playing Kiprusoff when they don't have to. Calgary is also a strong bet to be in the 2013 NHL Draft Lottery at the end of the regular season.
Ben Street has been recalled by Calgary. He will join the team in Edmonton with Curtis Glencross sidelined with the flu. Street has 15 goals and 21 assists in 67 games for AHL Abbotsford this season. Street has skated in two matches with the Flames this year.
Alex Tanguay will miss the remainder of the season with a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his knee. He's expected to need four-to-six weeks of recovery time. Tanguay suffered the injury in Friday's overtime win over Phoenix. He'll finish the year with 11 goals and 27 points in 40 games.
Curtis Glencross is being listed as a game-time decision for Saturday's clash with Edmonton because of the flu. If he can't play then defensemen Anton Babchuk will draw into the lineup in his place. However, it's unclear if he'll serve as a seventh defender or as a forward.
Akim Aliu has been called up by Calgary. He's expected to play Saturday night with Alex Tanguay out with a knee injury. Aliu has no points and 10 penalty minutes in two appearances with the Flames this season.
Joey MacDonald will be back between the pipes for Calgary Saturday night versus Edmonton. He made 29 stops in the Flames' 3-2 overtime win over Phoenix on Friday. He earned praise from coach Bob Hartley after the match and will start again over Miikka Kiprusoff, who is likely to retire after this season.
Ben Hanowski will be in Calgary Sunday, meaning he could play for the Flames Monday against Minnesota. Hanowski, a left winger, signed an entry-level deal with Flames on Friday. He is from Minnesota. "If I was able to make my NHL debut against the Minnesota Wild (on Monday), I think it would add a little sweetener, to play your first game against the team you grew up cheering for."
As much as Calgary fans may want the Flames (15-21-4) to finish as far down the standings as possible -- to be in a better position for a choice in the next draft -- that's hard to ask of professionals with any pride. "I still think there's teams to be caught," said Mark Giordano, who scored the winning goal in the Flames' 3-2 overtime win over Phoenix Friday. "There are a few teams ahead of us that are six, maybe four points after tonight and hopefully we can move up as far as possible. You don't even want to finish 14th. You want to finish as high as possible. As players, we want to win. We don't want to worry about anything else."
